A Tough Break

C harles Schmitter has been coaching c o l lege fencers since 1935.

Schmitter has spent 26 of his 29 y e a r s at MSU as head coach.

Schmitter has had a hand in making many of the rules which govern am ateur fencing in A m e r ic a today.

Two y e a r s ago he r e t i red as a m e m b e r of the NCAA fencing rules com m ittee after an 11 y e a r tenure.

A man who makes the rules so m e t im e s is one of the s t r i c t e s t e n f o r c e r s of those r u le s , and C harles Sch m it ter is such a man.

P erh ap s m o re than any coach on this c a m p u s . Schmitter plays the game exact ly the way the rule book specifies without a single d e viation or ‘ ' m i s in t e r p r e t a t i o n . ”

The announcement las t week that Spartan fe n c e r s were forfeiting their two opening wins hit Schm itter hard. He had no idea the two f e n ce r s involved w ere ineligible, and if he had any doubts at all he wouldn’ t have taken them to Colorado Springs.

A quirk of fate has m a r r e d S c h m i t t e r ’ s •‘ play it by the book” philosophy.
