Spring in the Sierra is always a roll of Mother Natures dice. We either get too much snow and the fruit trees freeze when they bloom, or we are in dire need of precipitation--like now. If youre not watering your trees and flower beds, some plants will die. Trees can suffer real damage in drought. My iris, tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths and garlic chives are all poking theirs heads up. I get a little crazy this time of year because I want to plant things and its just too early. So I have to console myself with turning and sifting my compost. I dont really enjoy shoveling compost, but I get amazing results from incorporating it into my gardens. And my trash has reduced drastically, just composting my food scraps.
Im a fan of composting, but Im not into spending money on fancy bins and enclosures. I currently have 3 piles in various stages of decomposition. One is about done (need to sift); one is halfway there, and the last one is very raw. My trusty short pitchfork turns the piles and some plastic garden fencing contains them. In summer, my lawn sprinklers keep the piles wet, so they dont dry out. Ive used just about every kind of device and system for composting and my piles work just fine, thank you very much.
Ill be cleaning up beds, cutting back sticks and stubs left over from last years blooms and growth, topping with compost and mulch and starting some mild fertilizer. I do a much harder rose prune now and get rid of any old blooms, though in this warm time, theyre starting to leaf out (argh!). I dont fertilize roses until it gets warmer, but working blood meal or a systemic for mildew or aphids can be done now. Its a good time to deal with snails and slugs. I use diatomaceous earth because its a naturally occurring soft, siliceous sedimentary rock thats
dangerous to critters with an exoskeleton, but people can eat it without harm. Some people eat it on purpose and its actually good for you.
Be careful not to disturb the soil where you have planted seeds when you plant new things or do any topping. These seedlings are very delicate. Gently tilling around established plants is good to aerate the soil to capture and hold more moisture. Thyme, sweet woodruff, oregano, marjoram and sage get haircuts now, too. They get scraggly over winter, so now is a good time to neaten them up. Creeping phlox will begin to bloom soon, along with candy tuft and some woody plants, like forsythia and quince. Dont prune these now or youll cut off the bloom. And do not touch your lilacsyou want bloom? Leave them alone!
TIPS: Dont put meat scraps, bones or dairy in your compost. However, coffee grounds, egg shells and seafood shells are great. Avocado pits dont break down well here in the West, so you might want to pound on them a bit before adding to the pilethis can be a good stress reliever! Woody stems, like rose and tree branches just dont break down well, so chip those or put them in your trash. They can be a good deterrent to keep cats from using your garden as a litter box, but not too eye appealing.
