A joint meeting of Lake Taupo Rotary and Taupo
Espresso to welcome and receive an address by the
District Governor 9930 , Keith Owens.
The meeting was called to order and John de
Lautour delivered Grace and invited those gathered to
enjoy the coming meal.
A hearty meal [including dessert] was enjoyed and
keeping to the time schedule the Sergeant asked for the
tables to be cleared and invited President Kathryn to
commence the meeting at precisely 7pm
P r e s i d e n t K a t h r y n
welcomed DG Keith and Elaine
Owens, Asst. Governor John and
Olwyn McNickle. President Ian
Chamberlain and the members
of Taupo Espresso. Taupo’s
Mayor David Trewavas and a
number of other guests,
partners and friends of Rotary.
Following the welcome President Kathryn announced
that there were to be a number of inductions and
presentations to be made.
Inductions: Two new members were welcomed and invited
to join the Rotary Club of Lake Taupo.
Firstly Maureen Bayley introduced new member
Jenny Johanson. Jenny is a long time resident of Taupo
having been involved in a number of businesses including
the Taupo Motor Camp. Jenny left Taupo for about five
years and since her recent return has taken up a position
with Bayleys Real Estate.
DG Keith presented Jenny with her Rotary badge,
name badge and members pack and invited the Club to
welcome Jenny as a member by acclimation. .........page 2

Secondly Mary Lockwood introduced new member Margy Price. Margy, originally
from South Africa has been a resident of Taupo for a number of years. Margy operates a
small accounting and administration practice from home and is very adept at making Roman
Blinds. In 2009 Margy took on the role as a contract administrator for the Taupo Moana
Rotary Club to assist with the management of funds received from the Lake Taupo Cycle
Challenge under the supervision of the Clubs Treasurer. With the amalgamation of Taupo
and Taupo Moana in November last year Margy was invited to become a member of Lake
Taupo Rotary and agreed this year to join.
DG Keith presented Margy with her Rotary badge, name badge and members pack
and invited the Club to welcome Margy as a member by acclimation.
Doug Simmons was then invited to present a Citation for the induction of a Club
Member as a Paul Harris Fellow [PHF].
Dennis Jenkins: Businessman, Author, Husband, Father and Rotarian. Dennis has
worked around the world in Banking, the Oil Industry and as Personnel Trainer across a
wide variety of disciplines. Recently “retired” Dennis and his wife Fran have taken the
lease on a local motel which is developing a reputation as the place to stay.
Dennis joined the Rotary Club of Taupo Moana in 2009 and for the last five years
has served as a member of the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge Charitable Trust Board the
last four years as its Chairman. Dennis has also taken the role as Campus Manager re-
sponsible for delivering the safe and efficient
operation of the North Domain during the lead
up to and winding down from Taupo’s iconic cy-
cling event “The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge”.
DG Keith then made the formal presen-
tation of the PHF badge, medal and certificate
to Dennis and invited the Club to acknowledge
its latest Paul Harris Fellow. .......... Page 3

Dennis was given the opportunity to respond and while a little lost for word thanked
the Club for the honour and his wife Fran for her support and encouragement over the
years.
DG Keith then went on to acknowledge an-
other of the Clubs members by the presentation
of a multiple Sapphire Paul Harris Pin to John de
Lautour. The pin was in acknowledgement of
John’s ongoing and steadfast support of the Ro-
tary Foundation
President Kathryn then formally introduced District Governor Keith Owens.
DG Keith outlined his itinerary for the coming
months and then presented some of the District Goals
for the year ahead. These included raising average
membership across the District by 3.3% each of the
next three years. That equates to the net growth of
each club by one member per year. Ongoing support of
the Rotary Foundation as the Charity of choice for Ro-
tarians. The goal is to contribute at least US$200,000
in the coming year across the District encouraging all
clubs and individuals to look at how they can raise the
contributions to an average of around $3,500 per club.
DG Keith explained that the District 9930 return contribution from the Rotary Foundation
this year was in excess of $40,000. Application for grants from this fund were closing
shortly and the District leadership were looking forward to finding out what innovative and
exciting projects were in the mix to be considered for a grant from these funds. Then
there is the fight to end Polio with there being as few as 17 reported cases in the world
this year. It is hoped that no more cases are reported in the next two years and the fight
then may have been won. DG Keith thanked the combined clubs for their welcome and
wished us all well for the coming Rotary year. ..............Page 4

Following the DG’s address Asst.
Governor John McNickle was invited to
make a presentation to John Picot of
Taupo Espresso. John has completed
the three levels of the Rotary Learning
and Information Program and his cer-
tificates had finally arrived. John ac-
cepted the certificates with thanks.
The final presentation of the night was one of Farewell. Dave
McAlley began with “......I am saying it is with great sadness that I
am up here to bib a fond farewell from Rotary to long serving mem-
ber Bob Pettigrew”
Bob has served Rotary for over 55 years, he has been President,
served as a club director all of the available roles. Bob was also the
DG’s Representative [now know as Asst. Governor] and convened
many large fund raising projects. Bob was also a member of the
Taupo Chapter of the Jaycee movement and belonged to the St John
organisation. Bob also served the Taupo
Community as the representative on
the Waikato Hospital Board. How he
fitted this in to a full family life is a
tribute to his organisational skills and
the support from his wife Evelyn.
Dave concluded with “... Bob it has
been a privilege to be a Rotarian
alongside you and I wish you and Eve-
lyn all the very best for the future
and I know we will keep in touch.”
Bob responded with a few words of thanks and to the ap-
plause of the members both Bob and Evelyn were presented
with a small tokens of appreciation.
President Ian Chamberlain [Taupo Espresso] offered a vote of thanks to DG Keith
and Elaine that was approved by acclimation.
PHF Sapphire Recipient John de Lautour then gave the Parting Thought.
“Tell all the people that you love, that you love them, at every opportunity”
