The Core Essence of Rotary is a
worldwide network of inspired
individuals who translate their passions
into relevant social causes to change
lives in communities.
THE MISSION of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business,
professional, and community leaders. THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
Is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First - The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second - High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business and community life; and Fourth - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service
The Four-Way Test
Of all things you think and do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all
concerned? Will it build
GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL
to all concerned?

WELCOME TO ROTARY 2014-15
DG David Kennedy meets RI President Gary C.K. Huang & Corinna
In the 2014-15 Rotary Year, our theme and challenge will be to Light Up Rotary. By shining a light on the great works of Rotary we will improve its image in our communities.
Our Rotary International President, Gary Huang has also urged Rotarians to participate in Rotary Day.
The Rotary Day concept is a simple one: hold a fun, informal event in your community and use it to introduce them to Rotary.
Imagine the collective impact if all 34,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide made a concerted effort to introduce the public to the fun, rewarding experiences that we all enjoy as Rotary members.
This Directory, will provide you with some broad information and contact details of many of the main programs, projects and service areas covered in our District. But we also encourage you to use the District and MyRotary Websites both as a source of information and a medium to communicate with each other.
Let’s make the 2014-15 Rotary Year a year of New Rotarians, exciting projects and programs that make a difference in someone’s life and most importantly……FUN! Yours in Rotary David Kennedy District Governor

ROTARY’S WHEEL EMBLEM
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since the earliest days. All Rotary clubs have this design
as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. In 1923, the “Rotary International Association” adopted a mechanically correct gear wheel with 24 cogs and six spokes as the emblem. The keyway was added to symbolise a working cog. The Rotary wheel was approved as the official R I emblem in January 1924. In 2013 the official colours of royal blue and gold together with the logo design were altered to offer a modern image with emphasis on the word ‘Rotary’. To Rotarians past and present, the Rotary wheel emblem evokes the image of a well-oiled, efficient machine, working for the service of mankind.

BRIEF HISTORY OF ROTARY
The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. The name Rotary came from the initial meetings being held in rotation at each member’s place of business.
The first four Rotarians were: (from left) Gustavus Loehr a mining engineer; Silvester Schiele a coal merchant; Hiram Shorey a tailor;
and attorney Paul Harris
Rotary's popularity spread with clubs chartered from San Francisco to New York to Winnipeg, Canada within a decade. By 1921 Rotary clubs were established on six continents and the organisation adopted the Rotary International name a year later. As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving club members’ professional and social interests. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to serve communities in need. The organisation's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto: Service Above Self. Rotarians in Australia continue to recognise this motto through the awarding of a Paul Harris Fellowship recognition. Today Rotary International is a worldwide organisation of service clubs with a membership of 1.228 million Rotarians in around 34,340 clubs in 215 countries. Rotary encourages diversity in membership that includes a mix of vocations, ethnic backgrounds, age and genders within Club members.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT 2014 - 15
GARY C.K. HUANG President Rotary International 2014-15
Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan Rotary is an organisation that has something for everyone. All over the world, in cities and towns, for well over a century, Rotarians have come
together to serve. Rotarians and others have discovered the joys of Rotary service, through Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Community Corps, Youth Exchange, and many other programs. All of us are part of the family of Rotary. And we have all gained so much from our Rotary service. We’ve made friends, helped our communities, and made the world a better, safer, and healthier place. We’ve become part of a truly international network of volunteers, & we’ve learned how much we can achieve when we put our differences aside and work together. In 2014-15, I will ask all of you to Light Up Rotary by sharing our service, strengthening our clubs, and letting our light shine in our communities. In this Rotary year, we will Light Up Rotary by reaching our goal of 1.3 million Rotarians, bringing in new members while working to keep the members we have. To do this, we’ll need to approach membership in new ways, and try new ideas. Hold a Rotary Day to give your community a chance to learn more about Rotary. Remember that Rotary is a family and is for the family: Encourage your spouse and other family members to consider joining, and reach out to Youth Exchange and Foundation alumni. Focus on your own club, and look realistically at why members stay, and why they leave. What can you do to make being a Rotarian an appealing and attractive opportunity for busy professionals and those with young families? We will also Light Up Rotary — and make history — by eradicating polio. Polio eradication within the next few years is absolutely realistic — if we keep up our momentum. So tell your friends, associates, and elected officials how critical it is that we End Polio Now. Donate to the PolioPlus Fund and encourage others to do so as well. By meeting the newest challenge issued by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we can make our money work three times as hard. Be an active part of the greatest public-private health partnership in the history of the world, and share in the pride when the job is finished. In 2014-15, as we strengthen our clubs and Light Up Rotary in more than 34,000 communities, our commitment and our service will light up the world.

The Club Visioning program is available to all Clubs in D9700.
It is planning approach that involves the participation of most
members in a four hour workshop to develop a longer term
vision and plan for the Club.
The workshop develops a consensus of what the Club
members wish to do and starts to put together a plan for
implementation. D9700 has a Sub-Committee of trained
facilitators who can help you with the program in your Club.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
Public Relations is essential to Rotary’s future. It not only informs
the community that Rotary is a credible organisation that meets
real needs, but also motivates Rotarians to be active members of
your Club and District. Every Rotary Club needs a Public Relations
plan to publicise its service activities through the various local
media.
Through effective Public Relations Clubs are able to:
Gain support and resources for projects
Build links with other community organisations
Attract qualified candidates for membership
Recognise Rotary Club members for their contributions to the
community

Rotary International that gives Rotarians and their families
the opportunity to host and visit Rotarians around the world.
The aim is to build greater international understanding and
goodwill among Rotarians and their families. A Friendship
Exchange may provide opportunities for vocational
experiences and developing service projects, while
experiencing other cultures and making lasting friendships.
Rotary Friendship
Exchanges are expected
to be reciprocal and can
be a team exchange or

ageing. The association also strives to expand interests and to
encourage the fellowship of new friends.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
Director PDG Ian Simpson Orange North
6361 4491 (hm) 0419 978 996
The Rotary Foundation is our charity Doing Good in the World. Its mission is to enable Rotarians to advance world
understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement
of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
The Foundation is implementing a new grant structure on 1 July
2013. Six areas of focus reflect critical humanitarian issues and
needs that Rotarians are addressing worldwide. They align Rotary
with other international development efforts and will strategically
further the Foundations mission.
PEACE AND CONFLICT PREVENTION/RESOLUTION
DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
WATER AND SANITATION
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH
BASIC EDUCATION AND LITERACY
ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The Foundation aims to support larger projects with sustainable,
high impact outcomes in one or more of the six areas of focus.
ROTARY FOUNDATION GRANTS
The Rotary Foundation offers two main grant types: District Grants
and Global Grants.
District Grants District grants fund short-term projects and activities, either local or
international that support the Foundations Mission.
Clubs submit their funding requests to the District, which
administers and distributes the funds. The District has procedures
and policies for how and when Clubs submit requests, as well as
any additional requirements.
D9700 Directory 38 2014-2015
Global Grants Global grants fund large-scale projects and activities that:
Align with one or more area of focus;
Respond to a need the benefiting community has
identified;
Include the active participation of the benefiting
community;
Are designed to enable the community to help itself after
the Rotary club or district has concluded its work; and
Have measurable results.
Activities funded by Global grants include:
Humanitarian projects to address community needs
by providing sustainable, measurable outcomes in the
benefiting community
Vocational training teams to build skills within a
community by offering local training or by supporting
groups of professionals abroad for rigorous study of
their profession or to teach local professionals about a
particular field. This type of training may be most
effective in conjunction with a humanitarian project.
Scholarships fund study by graduates whose career
goals support an area of focus.

HOW DO WE QUALIFY FOR A GRANT?
District Qualification To participate in district and global
grants, the district needs to complete a qualification process,
agreeing to implement the financial and stewardship requirements
in a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
By successfully completing these requirements, a district becomes
‘qualified’, and is eligible to participate in Rotary Foundation (TRF)
grants.
D9700 Directory 39 2014-2015
Club Qualification To participate in global grants, the club must:
(1) agree to implement the financial and stewardship requirements
in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) provided by The
Rotary Foundation (TRF); and,
(2) send at least one club member to a district Grant Management
Seminar each year.
The district requires clubs to be qualified to participate in Rotary
Foundation district grants.

DISTRICT PEACE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM
The idea of Peace Communities was initiated in District 9700 in
1992. It has been embraced by many Rotary Districts and Clubs and
Peace Cities have been designated around the world.
Rotarians committed to furthering Peace set up Peace symbols on
suitable sites. Rotarians and local citizens meet on special days to
recognise local citizens, students, schools and organisations for
their contribution to Peace in Action within the community.
The program also activates partnerships between Rotary Clubs and
civic authorities and organisations to focus on peace in local
communities. Rotary Clubs are encouraged to initiate Peace in
Action projects with community groups (e.g. creating a garden for
dementia patients, supporting Aboriginal conciliation activities,
conducting a program for disadvantaged teens). Rotary Peace
projects are those that successfully make a difference in the lives of
individuals and groups and so contribute to Peace within the
community.
The Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Kooringal has prepared a Peace
Communities Kit.

Statement of Conduct for Working with Children & Young People:
Rotary International strives to create and maintain a safe
environment for all youth who participate in Rotary activities.
To the best of their ability, Rotarians, Rotarians’ spouses, and
partners, and other volunteers must safeguard the children and
young people they come into contact with and protect them from
physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.
From the NSW Commission for Children and Young People Website:
“A Child-Safe Child-friendly organisation:
Is preventative rather than reactive.
Is child-centred. It recognises that children and young
people are at the core and responds accordingly.
Has a holistic approach to working with children and young
people. It knows that when children and young people are
safe and valued, this will have an effect on all areas of
their lives.
Acknowledges the harm done by all forms of abuse.
Actively decreases negative influences and enhances
positive influences.
Have clear boundaries for behaviour within the
organisation.
Has a commitment embedded in the organisational culture
to the link between safety and participation. Children and
young people are unlikely to speak up about experiences
of feeling unsafe if their participation is not valued and
facilitated in an organisation”.
To this end and to fulfil Government Regulation, it is asked that any
member involved in Youth programs or one-on-one contact with
Children / Young People whilst representing a Rotary Club, complete
the NEW Working with Children Clearance Check.

The Rotary International Youth Exchange
program provides school students with an
opportunity to study and be hosted overseas
for a year. The program furthers
international goodwill and understanding
and enables students to advance their
education and broaden their own outlook.
D9700 Directory 52 2014-2015
Now in its 55th year, the program has high public recognition and
extends Rotary to a wider community, crossing boundaries of age,
race, nationality and religion. Students act as ambassadors while
they study and live in another culture.
Outbound students and their parents receive detailed preparation
in the several months prior to the exchange that occurs over one
calendar year, followed by debriefing on their return. Clubs need to
identify and screen candidates, with final selections, training and
debriefing conducted by the District Committee.
Candidates should be identified several months before applications
are due with screening at Club level occurring in March & April,
when the candidates are generally in Years 9, 10, 11 or Year 12.
Club members or prospective applicants should contact their Group
representative for information or advice relating to the program.
Detailed information and Student Expression of Interest forms are
on the web site.
Where a Club sponsors an outbound student they will be expected
to reciprocate by hosting an inbound student. Inbound students
from Northern Hemisphere countries in Europe and Japan usually
arrive in July, and southern hemisphere countries in January.

ROTARY ADVENTURE IN CITIZENSHIP - RAIC
Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) is an intensive and fun filled
week-long program to help prepare young adults for full
participation as citizens of Australia.
Each year around 45 Year 11 students (the delegates) are sent by
their local Rotary clubs to Canberra. They are taken out of their
comfort zones into new places, set amongst new faces and asked to
do new things. For a week, RAIC puts the delegates "inside"
Canberra.
Run in partnership with the Parliamentary Education Office, the
delegates spend a lot of time inside Parliament House in areas not
usually open to the public. They often have morning tea with the
President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of
Representatives. They view Question Time and are debriefed by a
journalist from the Press Gallery.
They learn the difference between a Bill and an Act. They
participate in mock Parliamentary debates themselves. They
experience the national institutions (War Memorial, Institute of
Sport etc) in a way that is more revealing than the usual school
excursion can provide.
And most importantly, they meet and make friends with young
people from all over Australia. Delegates from previous years have
said this is one of the highlights of the RAIC program. Applications
open in February and close in April.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is an outreach program
founded by the University of Newcastle in conjunction with Rotary.
It aims to address our skills shortage in science and engineering by
inspiring young people to study senior Maths, Physics and
Chemistry.
The Challenge provides students with an exciting day where they
compete with other school groups in demanding activities. This
gives students an appreciation of the complexities of a career in the
science and engineering fields.
Typically eight schools per day compete in a Challenge, with each
school providing a team of approx 32 students. These teams are
divided into eight groups that compete in one or two activities
during the day.
The fun and hands-on activities involve principles of science,
engineering and technology. The concept is to immediately engage
students in the activity with a minimum of introduction and theory.
Students explore scientific principles for themselves rather than
being guided to a predetermined
answer.
District 9700 has been involved since
2005 and in 2012-13 the Challenge
was run at Forbes, Orange, Wagga
Wagga and Young.
