Please take a moment to review the enclosed material on handling laboratory animal bedding. The VBDS 4900 Vacuum Bedding Delivery System combines an automated Bag slitter with silo, or bulk bag system with a dispenser head and cage inverter. The VBDS 4900 is compatible with standard bedding bags or bails from 15-100 lbs. Paper/Wood pulp, chip or shavings, cob etc. The bedding only needs to be handled by the operator one single time. The VBRS Vacuum Bedding Removal System has been specifically developed and extensively field-tested to handle dry, wet or slurry animal bedding materials quickly and ergonomically. 1,2, 3 This system automatically transports materials to compactors, dumpsters, incinerators, or tilt carts, over extended distances. 6, 7 The VBRS Vacuum Bedding Removal System eliminates dust, aerosols, allergens, and hazardous materials. As a stand alone system (wand only) or connected to a dump station, the VBRS is an efficient and effective means to remove soiled bedding. Cost effective and priced to pay for itself. Proven to pay for itself through labor savings, improved productivity and reduced material handling. 4, 5 High-load performance exceeds the throughput capacity of all popular conveyor wash equipment. 6, 7 Compact size. Easy to install and maintain. Does not require sealed dumpsters, water, drains, utility areas or other special facility design considerations or alterations. HIGH EFFICIENCY SEPARATING VALVE
The high efficiency Separating Valve is the basis of the vacuum conveying systems in the Vacuum Bedding Removal Systems VBRS, Vacuum Bedding Delivery Systems VBDS, and Vacuum Bedding Transfer System VBTS. BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The patented high efficiency Separating Valve has been designed and sized specifically for the variety of materials and conditions found in laboratory animal facilities. The Separating Valve represents a departure from traditional vacuum conveying systems that were designed for handling relatively uniform, free flowing materials and eliminates the necessity for large blowers, large cyclone separators, large dust collectors, special sealed dumpsters and costly utility rooms.
The Discharge Unit, containing the Separating Valve, shares the footprint of the receptacle (compactor, dumpster, bin or hopper) with no addition space requirements. A high performance regenerative vacuum/blower is housed in the Discharge Unit.
THEORY OF OPERATION: Animal bedding (sterile, soiled or wet material, including feed) is vacuumed out of the cages, Automatic Dump stations, Bulk Bag Discharges, or hoppers. The material is transported via the Transport tube (1) to the Separating Valve and collected in chambers (3) of the Separating Valve. Each chamber, in the Separating Valve, contains a coarse filtration screen (4), which separates the vacuum air (2) from the material being collected. The chambers (3) in the Separating Valve, alternate between vacuum-intake (6) portion of the Separating Valve and the ambient pressure-discharge (5) portion of the Separating Valve. As the chambers rotate to the discharge portion of the assembly, the material leaves the chambers, descending into the receptacle (compactor, dumpster, bin or hopper) via the Discharge Tube. After the coarse filtration screen, the vacuum air (2) passes through a Cyclone Separator to remove the dust and fines. The air is then filtered by first passing through a Filtration Collection Bag and then through a HEPA filter. The filtered air is then pulled through the Regenerative Vacuum/Blower and exhausted through the Discharge.

Some Considerations: Outlined below is a comparison of the steps between the Model VBRS 9400 Vacuum Bedding Removal System and macerator (under-sink) type systems to demonstrate the difference in the labor to accomplish the same task. The reduced risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) and other injury risk factors should also be evident.
MACERATOR WASTE DISPOSAL Pans are lifted off transport cart and moved to macerator (carefully without spilling). Pans are then tilted up and/or turned over to empty the majority of debris. Pans are then tilted back and/or turned back over and scraped. Pans are then tilted back again to remove remaining debris. Pans are moved to and loaded into wash-rack or conveyor. Maceration generates aerosols and odors and does not trap allergens.
MODEL VBRS 9400
Pans are vacuumed while on the transport cart. Debris is removed without scraping. Pans only need to be moved once to load into wash-rack or conveyor. Odors, allergens, and dust are minimized with the vacuum air.
SOME ADDITIONAL COMPARATIVE CONSIDERATIONS
MODEL VBRS 9400
Cages and pans are virtually free of debris without scrapping - wash equipment screens remain clean. Clean, dust and allergen free work environment - vacuuming does not allow aerosol particles or odors to escape. Environmentally responsible. Transports waste bedding directly to compactor, dumpster or incinerator with air.
MACERATING WASTE DISPOSERS Debris must be scraped from cages and pans – time consuming, high risk for MSDs and other injuries. Turning over cages and pans to empty them, allows dust and allergens to escape. Maceration generates aerosols and odors. Consumes 480 gallons of fresh water per hour. Waste water treatment required. Drain clogging potential. The macerator requires extensive plumbing (supply & sanitary waste lines, etc.) & permanently occupies valuable wash area space.

FAQ’s Q. How fast will it work? Can it keep up with my conveyor wash-machine? A. Yes, MODEL VBRS exceeds the process capacity of conventional conveyor wash-machines in the number of cages and the amount of material it can handle. Q. What about wet bedding from leaky water bottles or water valves? A. Yes, MODEL VBRS effectively removes soiled animal bedding and feed even if it is wet or slurry. Q. Do I need a special dumpster or compactor? Does it need to be sealed for a vacuum? A. Any conventional container or receptacle can be used, since no air-seal is required. A dust cover is recommended to keep debris from escaping and pests out of the container. Q. How loud is the system? A. The operator is exposed to a whisper of air. The noise at the Central Cabinet with the vacuum blower and motor is less than 70db. Q. Do I need to have MODEL VBRS located in a utility room or area? A. No, the Central cabinet has a small footprint and can be located anywhere (washroom, hallway, loading dock or closet, for example). Q. Can I place the system in a cage washroom? A. Yes, NEMA 4X construction allows MODEL VBRS to be placed in wash-down areas or outside, if desired. Q. Can it handle rabbit, dog and primate pans? A. Yes, wet, dry, or slurry MODEL VBRS removes even water and bulky matter effectively. It reduces the number of steps needed to clean them and most of the risk factors in lifting the pans. Q. How do you clean MODEL VBRS? A. Water or sanitizing solutions are drawn (vacuumed) through the transport tubing and valve. Filters are changed periodically as needed. Q. My facility is located in the basement below ground level, can MODEL VBRS lift wet bedding high enough to reach my dumpster? A. Yes, the MODEL VBRS has been demonstrated to and is successfully used to convey wet bedding up over two stories. Q. My facility is several stories above ground level and I can’t have it acute to where the dumpster is located. How will MODEL VBRS help me? A MODEL VBRS improves productivity by reducing the number of steps emptying, scraping and bagging waste bedding.

Helpful planning hints for the Vacuum Bedding Removal System (VBRS 9400)
A few simple considerations to assure optimal results:
Non-dedicated compactors are recommended whenever possible. Though a dumpster, tilt cart or
any receptacle can be used, the volume of material being discharged and the characteristic steep material mounding limit the available container capacity and require frequent container changes. Compactors can also be interfaced so that the VBRS is temporarily halted when the compactor is being manually charged with other material.
Elevate the material up to the highest level immediately rather than in steps. The transport
(conveying) tube should be installed directly above the work area and should rise vertically to the highest point before proceeding horizontally to the discharge. Consult factory if this installation layout is not feasible.
Long radius bends (elbows) of 6 ½ inches are recommended. Shorter radii will cause a centrifugal
effect, leading to potential blockages and tube wear. The more direct path with the fewer bends to the discharge point the, the more efficient the system will be.
Locate the Filter Cabinet (the blower and filter unit) near the point of discharge. The HEPA filtered
exhaust air is used as a heat trace and to keep the separating screens clear. The NEMA 4X construction and ultra quiet operation (less than 70 db) permits it to be located anywhere, peopled hallway or loading dock, inside or out, even in wash down locations. A 24 volt Control and Monitor Panel Box is located in the work area (cage washroom) for remote operation of the system.
Protect the transport tubing from outside weather and elements with a chase enclosure to the
discharge point. The transport tube is treated with a special static dissipative material that should be protected. Keeping the transport tube from temperature extremes improves its service reliability and life. The chase will also serve as housing for the electrical utilities and the exhaust airline to the Discharge Module containing the separating valve.

Root Cause Analysis
Data gathered from field service, customer installed base, engineering, development, and manufacturing is logged into a pareto chart. The pareto chart identifies 20% of system problems that cause 80% of the failures. This allows us to focus on the top 3-5 issues and take the corrective action needed with a timely and methodical approach. These strategic actions are reviewed monthly to determine progress. Decisions are made on documented specifications and then incorporated into the test bed. A pre determined “burn-in” timeframe is adopted and the EC (engineering change) is evaluated at the conclusion. At this time the decision is made to either incorporate this change or take a different approach. All successful EC’s are then locked in as part of system design going forward. EC’s that are system fixes are turned over to field service to be installed at all customer locations, ec’s that are system enhancements are offered as upgrades for customers to evaluate and purchase if they choose to do so. Overall System Quality
Roe Bio-Medical Products is encouraging a “partnership” philosophy with our customer base. This partnership will be crucial for gathering data to enable Roe Bio-Medical to evaluate system performance and make the necessary changes to increase overall availability time. These communications may also indicate user operations that need to be evaluated and modified for system optimization. Data required for CIP
MTBF: Mean time between failure. Daily system availability log needs to be kept by the customer. This log simply identifies that the system is running or is down needing repair or maintenance. This log should run on a weekly basis and only cover the timeframe that a system can be used. For example if the lab runs 24/7 the benchmark would be 168 hours. We will tailor this to each individual location.
MTTR: Mean time to repair. When it is determined that a system is down due to failure we want
to track how long it takes to bring the system back on line. Using these two data points we can determine system availability time. This tracking method has not yet been implemented at our installed base but will be initiated by our field service group and with the approval of our customers it is our hope that we will start gathering this data in Q4 ’08. Conclusion
The continuous improvement program is a proven entity that Roe Bio-Medical has adopted to mature our tool set and enable us to offer LAS systems that will perform reliably. We have taken measures that have already sown significant results, however we need the working partnership with our customers, outlined above, to make the biggest leap forward for the mutual benefit.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
ALLERGIES
IN THE LABORATORY ANIMAL FACILITY Dec. 2006
315/13/2009 ENGINEERING for LABORATORY ANIMAL SCIENCE MANAGEMENT & CARE ©
There is an extensive body of literature on laboratory animal allergies. Enclosed are relatively concise reference articles in pdf format as listed below. We offer them as a starting point for your program. The ILAR Journal (http://dels.nas.edu/ilar_n/ilarjournal/journal.shtml) is a particularly useful source for this information.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY
Cullinan, et al., 1994: Prospective study of new workers with no previous rat exposure:
• Range of 30-1369 days from time of employment to onset of symptoms.
• Mean duration of employment before symptom onset was:
214 days for nose and eye symptoms
335 days for skin symptoms
365 days for chest symptoms
• Assuming regular exposure, in general, most who develop allergies will do so within 3 years of employment
• One third are symptomatic in the first year, 70% within 3 years
• About 70% of those who eventually develop asthma will do so within 3 years of developing initial allergy symptoms
www.roebiomed.com
The Occupational Health and Safety Tables are a useful visual showing allergy incidence rates with the original data found in the literature. Between 11 and 44% of the individuals working with laboratory animals report work-related allergic symptoms. Of those who become symptomatic, 4 to 22% may eventually develop occupational asthma that can persist even after exposure ceases1,2,3. Employee Medical Surveillance Programs, such as the NIH Animal Exposure Surveillance Program4 have been widely adopted to identify and assist departments and organizations in dealing with issues of employees exposed to animals in the work place. Overall, laboratory animal allergy incidence rates have not significantly changed since the issue was first identified. Administrative approaches and PPE’s have been shown to reduce the incidence rates with some success. Engineering controls are regarded as the most effective means to control allergen and aerosol exposure to employees5. Costs associated with laboratory animal allergy incidences have been markedly escalating in recent years. Successful claims ranging to over $200,000.00 are not unheard of (customer communication). Even when a claim is not made the costs have significant impact on an organization arising from lost time, retraining, reporting and associated administrative time. At present we are working on a paper for the industry directed at these costs and would like you to participate, if you are interested. While OSHA does not have a standard that specifically applies to occupational asthma, OSHA will be targeting sites that report 12 or more injuries or illnesses resulting in lost time from work, work restrictions, or a job transfer for every 100 full-time workers. The following standards can be used to address safety from OA causal agents (source: http://www.labsafety.com/refinfo/ezfacts/ezf214.htm)
OSHA Act of 1970, General Duty Clause 5(a)(1). Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1904, OSHA’s Recording and Reporting
Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. Title 29 CFR 1910.134, OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard.

A QUICK METHOD OF CALCULATING PROCESS TIMES AND COSTS: By examining the steps involved during cage preparation for cleaning, the handling of waste bedding is clearly the most time consuming. Typical steps are outlined in “Time Motion Study Example.” A quick method to determine the potential cost savings for your facility is provided below. The example used below is derived from actual studies where conveyor wash machines had 30” wide conveyor belts with drive speeds between 60” per minute and 75” per minute. The cages were standard shoeboxes.
. Find the Potential Direct Labor Savings in your facility by first supplying the following: Total hours to wash (process) cages with the conveyor wash in your facility________ Total number of cages processed per day with the conveyor wash in your facility______ Conveyor Belt Speed (count the number of one inch links per minute) ________ 1. Find the Optimal Conveyor Output (cages/minute) = conveyor belt speed (inches/minute)
Cage length (inches/cage) x number of cages across conveyor
Example If: the conveyor belt speed is = 60 inches / minute The length of a shoe box cage is = 12.625 (125/8) inches 4 cages are washed across the conveyor belt
Then: 60”/min 12.625” x 4 cages across = 19 cages / min
2. To find the optimal process time for the number of cages processed per day, divide the Number of Cages Processed per Day by the Optimal Conveyor Output
Example If: Optimal Conveyor Output = 19 cages / minute 1000 cages are processed per day
Then: 1000 cages 19 cages/min. = 52.6 minutes (0.88 hr)
3. To find the Potential Process Time Savings, subtract the Optimal Process Time in hours per day from the Actual Process Time in hours per day
Example If: Actual Process Time = 5.21 hr / day Optimal Process Time = 0.88 hr / day Then: Potential Process Time Savings = 5.21 hr - 0.88 hr = 4.33 hr/day
4. To find the Potential Direct Labor Savings multiply Potential Process Time Savings in hours per day by the Number of Employees required to operate the equipment
Example If: Potential Process Time Savings = 4.33 hr/day Number of Employees in cagewash = 2
Then: Potential Direct Labor Savings = 8.66 hr/day 2000 hr / year
. Finding the Indirect Labor cost use a simplified version of W. Edwards Deming’s formula. That is for every hour not needed to spend performing one task is an hour gained to spend on another task. e.g. 2000 hr/year saved processing cages = 2000 hours spent performing animal care or twice the hours gained.
