GENERAL DESCRIPTIONSKR 80, the world’s first electronic gryocompass for marine use - and stilla leader in its field now has many detailed improvements, reflected in theSKR 82 version.

The variety of applications continues to grow, from high speed jet boatsto ocean racing yachts. Each application benefiting from the manyadvantages that this gyrocompass offers.

Some unique, some accepted as normal, but never before all combinedin a single unit.

Until the introduction of SKR 80 the marine application of some gyrotechniques was considered unachievable using conventional technology. The growing installation list testifies to Robertson’s success in overcomingthese problems.

In co-operation with Singer Aerospace & Marine Systems Group and A/SKongsberg Våpenfabrikk, Robertson developed a gyrocompass formarine purposes.

Navigators around the world are now relying on the innovationsachieved.

The gyrocompass has been approved by Det Norske Veritas, (D.O.T.)Department of Trade (UK), (D.H.I.) Deutsche Hydrographische Institut (W.Germany), the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and conforms with theI.M.O. resolution A.424 (XI).

The small, very accurate MAREX® Gyro mounted in a two gimbalplatform serves as a sensor to electronic control circuits which actuategimbal motors to stabilise and align the gyrocompass. This servo controlprovides the necessary stabilisation torque and allows the gyromomentum to be much smaller than that of conventional gyrocompasses.

The unique electronic design of the system provides short alignment time, while also minimising errors under dynamic conditions.

The advantages thus achieved are:

• Short alignment time• Superior dynamic performance• No discernible follow-up errors• Lightweight construction• Simple operation• No regular maintenance

The design also incorporates complete interchangeability and BITE(Built-in test equipment) i.e. any of the basic modules can be replacedonboard with a corresponding spare part, without cost-demandingrealignment procedures.

The BITE functions reduce the time for trouble shooting to a minimum.

Compensation for speed and latitude errors is provided for by separatecontrols, thus making correction charts superfluous. For special purposesthe gyrocompass can, as an option, also be equipped for automaticspeed compensation.

An optional switching unit is available allowing use of a back up unit tomaintain input to computer/autopilot.

In the most modern test laboratory in Norway, located at A/S KongsbergVåpenfabrikk, the SKR 82 has been through a series of tests, vibration, shock, temperature and salt mist, far more severe than conditionsnormally found onboard a ship.

SKR Control Unit

Normally mounted on the master compass, it can be remotely installedusing an extension cable.

The digital heading readout on the control unit is obtained by equippingthe compass with a repeater interface, which is capable of driving thecontrol unit readout (and an additional heading indicator), without theneed for a separate distribution unit.
