March 2019
COUNCIL INSTALLATION 2019
This is one of the odd years
when Lent begins in March and
Easter happens later in April. Yet,
we still have 40 days of Lent. We
will still have Ash Wednesday
Worship, with the distribution of
ashes and Holy Communion. We
will still have midweek
Wednesday worship services in
the afternoon, and a book study
on Wednesday evenings. This
year our afternoon worship
series theme will be “At the
Crossroads;” and, the evening
book study will be based on Max
Lucado’s “Before Amen: The
Power of a Simple Prayer.” You
do not have to buy or read the
book to join the study group.
There will be a “study guide”
available for purchase if you
choose. A signup sheet will be on
the Welcome Table and you can
indicate whether you want to
purchase a study guide there.
“Do I have to give up something
for Lent?” That is a question I
hear on occasion at this time of
year. And, along those same
lines, “Isn’t that just for
Catholics?” The answers are
“No” and “No.” The Lutheran
Church does not insist that we
give up something for Lent; and,
the opportunity is open to all
Christians. So, why do it?
The purpose is to participate in a
partial fast, which is a spiritual
discipline that is open to all
Christians. A complete fast
would be to give up food and
water for a specified period of
time, specifically for spiritual
reasons (i.e. God tells you to). A
complete fast should not be
done without consulting your
doctor and without a specific
spiritual direction to do so. A
partial fast, like giving up
something for Lent, can help us
be aware of how much control
something can have over our life.
As a personal example, in two
separate years I have given up
Pepsi and chocolate, and
discovered that those things can
be addictive. It was a great
learning experience. I highly
recommend that you consider
giving up something you really
love, whether a food, beverage,
or activity and after Lent
evaluate how addictive that food,
beverage or activity had become
for you. As an alternative, you
might consider giving the money
you would have spent on the
food or beverage to the Church
or another charitable
organization. Or, you might
consider using the time you
would have spent on that activity
to read the Bible or to add to
your prayer time.

Most of all Lent is a time to
examine one’s life, both physical
and spiritual, and see how that
life does or does not conform to
God’s Will. It is not a Law, it is a
Gift. An opportunity to draw
closer to God and allow God to
shape you and your future for
the better.

News from the Office Administrator
March 2019
Happy Spring! It is hard to believe that it is March and Lent begins
already; I am still recovering from Christmas. For Lent this year we will
be having a 3:00 PM service (except on Ash Wednesday when it is a
4:00 PM service with soup supper to follow) and a four-week, 7:00 PM
book study beginning on March 13th. The book study is authored by
Max Lucado and is entitled Before Amen.
Make sure to look at the events listed at the bottom of this article, as
we have a lot going on this month. Of special note is the return of AJ
Cipperly for two workshops on Dementia. She is a renowned expert
on this topic-- you can’t help but learn something new.
We will be having a New Member Sunday on the 24th. If you are
interested in membership at Redeemer, please see either Susan or
Kadie in the office and we will give you all the details. On this Sunday
we will recognize all who have joined since the last New Member
Sunday.
Make sure you check the Welcome Table in the narthex for upcoming
events. We post flyers and signup sheets there for many different
activities, so come and choose some fun and informative things to do!
Our Visitation/Communion Teams continue to reach out to our
members in need with companionship and communion. Our parish
nurses are providing support to our members with medical issues. If
you know of anyone who needs visiting or help with a medical
question, or if you would like to be one of our volunteers providing
care, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]
or call the church office at 813-634-1292. Our list of folks who are
homebound keeps increasing and we could use more team
members to visit them, particularly men to visit other men.

In one article about stewardship the opening
question reads, “Every time the word ‘stewardship’
is mentioned, do you see people gently slide down
in their church pew or move to protect their
wallets?”
Stewardship has an undeservedly bad reputation in
most mainline churches. Most members equate the
word stewardship specifically with money, although
that is a very limited understanding of what the
Bible talks about. Biblical stewardship is about a
believer’s entire life. Is money part of life? I think
everyone would answer, “Of course it is…” Is money
the only thing in life? I hope everyone would answer,
“Of course not!” If you answer that money is the
only thing in your life, then we need to talk about
more than simple stewardship.
Commercials, television, the Internet, movies, and
more communicate that our individual happiness is
only achieved by focusing on our own wants and
desires. I have heard older adults talk about
younger generations having an attitude of
entitlement. I think the reference is about some
people expecting things to be given to them, while
those saying it would claim that they had to work for
everything they have.
Psalm 24:1 reads, “The earth is the Lord’s and all
that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.” The
Bible says that everything we have and even who we
are literally belongs to God; and, what we think we
own is on loan from God, for which God calls us to
be stewards of what belongs to God – the earth,
people and possessions. A simple calculation to
determine everything that belongs to you is to name
everything you get to take with you when you die.
The common denominator for rich and poor alike is
how much we get to take with us when we die.
Biblical stewardship has everything to do with our
relationship to the Almighty and very little to do with
what we think we own. As you evaluate your mind,
body and spirit during this Lenten season remember
Jesus’ words, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry
about your life, what you will eat or what you will
drink, or about your body, what you will
wear…indeed your heavenly Father knows that you
need all these things. But strive first for the
kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all
these things will be given to you as well” (Matt 6:25,
32-33; NRSV).

From the Parish Nurse Team
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)
HSV-1 is a highly contagious infection, which is common throughout the world. Most HSV-1 infections are
acquired during childhood, and infection is lifelong. The vast majority of HSV-1 infections are oral herpes
(infections in or around the mouth).
Signs and symptoms
HSV-1 is mostly asymptomatic, and the majority of people with HSV-1 infection are unaware they are infected.
Symptoms include painful blisters or open sores called ulcers in or around the mouth. Sores on the lips are
commonly referred to as “cold sores.” Infected persons will often experience a tingling, itching, or burning
sensation around their mouth before the appearance of sores. After initial infection, the blisters or ulcers can
periodically recur with the frequency varying from person to person.
Transmission HSV-1 is mainly transmitted by oral-to-oral contact.
Treatment
Antiviral prescription medications, such as acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir, are the most effective
medications available. These can help to reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms, but cannot cure the
infection. Over the counter creams, like Abreva (or generic equivalent) can also help especially when started
early.
Prevention
HSV-1 is most contagious during an outbreak of symptomatic oral herpes, but it can also be transmitted when
no symptoms are felt or visible. People with active symptoms of oral herpes should avoid oral contact with
others and sharing objects that have contact with saliva.

to better understand those who are struggling in the
Mideast and North Africa. Learn how education and
the gospel give hope and change lives. Beverly is

years working in Saudi Arabia. More info on the

have one. Everyone is welcome to come hear her
message.
Soup Meal following the Ash Wednesday
Service on March. 6th
WELCA is organizing a soup meal following the 4:00
PM Ash Wednesday Service on March 6th. If you
are willing to provide a crock pot of your favorite
soup, some bread, or a dessert, please sign the
sheet on the counter in the Narthex. Plan to stay
after the service to try a variety of delicious home
cooked soups!
Service times during Lent
The Lenten worship theme this year will be At the
Crossroads. Wednesday service times will be at
3:00 PM (with the exception of Ash Wednesday).
Many of those involved in the story of the Passion of
Christ came to a crossroads and had to decide
which way to go. Some chose well, some did not,
and the stories of each of these experiences at
various crossroads helps us to know what to do and
what not to do when we encounter similar
crossroads in our own lives. In the end, each service
in the series reveals in some way how Christ and his
cross help us to decide which path is in line with
God’s will for us.
Bible Study
Members, visitors, guests, and friends, please join
us on Thursdays at 10:00 AM for Bible study. The
current topic is Hebrews. No prior knowledge of the
Bible required, and you don’t even need to bring a
Bible. One will be provided for you.
Refreshments are served and it is FREE!
Women’s Bible Women’s Bible Study meets at noon the 2nd Friday
of each month. Women’s Bible Study will meet
again on March 8th. Susan Wold and Paula
Simenson co-lead the Bible Study. A new topic from
the Gathering magazine is discussed every month.

and bring a friend.

Rummage Sale 2019
The annual WELCA rummage sale was a stunning
success. We started in September 2018 to collect
items. We priced and sorted things and stored
them in Phil Eaton’s garage (thanks Dick). Unpriced
items were put in Edsil’s garage (thanks Kathie
Hackett). Many new volunteers came to help on the
collection dates. In December, we had the
congregation Christmas sale, which went very well.
In January, we started to collect merchandise. We
were able to price and box like items for easier set
up. We had a team that set up racks (thanks John
and Amy). Feb. 2nd the AMIKids came to Buhr Hall
and set up the tables. Thanks to Dick and Jerry for
being there to help with the boys. All the publicity
was sent out to the town. On Sunday, a large group
showed up to get the show on the road. Monday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday people brought in
donations; boxes and bins were unpacked, clothes
were hung, jewelry was displayed, craft corner was
organized, books were put on tables, kids’ table was
designed, linens were folded and things were
displayed. Thanks to many volunteers we were on
target for Friday. Thursday we received many baked
items. Many volunteers tweaked the tables to
organize our products.
Friday morning the volunteers showed up, the
parking lot was full, and the customers came. We
had a line until around 10:30 AM. Sales were great.
Saturday was a slower day but the tables became
empty. We had the quilt drawing at 11:30 AM. The
last hot dog was served. At noon we closed our
doors. The remaining volunteers stayed to clean up.
Buhr Hall was set for Fellowship.
I believe this year we had the greatest and largest
group of volunteers for every event. New friends
were made and a fun time was had by all. Through
their dedication, we were able to raise over
$10,000 to use for projects. The Veterans’
Memorial of SCC, the seminary student we support,
and Disaster Relief will receive a donation. We will
also use some of the money for a project at church.
The Thrivent team was able to cover most of our
food costs.
I must admit this was the hardest year for me
personally. I’m grateful for Tina Schwartz’s help as
co-chair. I am thankful for each volunteer who
encouraged me to carry on. It has been my
pleasure and honor to chair the sale for the last 11
years. I am stepping down as chair and will gladly
assist anyone who wishes to assume that
responsibility.
God’s Blessing to all!
