Raven’s Roost: A Message from
the Principal The eighth grade SOL writing prompt will be
administered on Wednesday, March 7,
2012. Students will take the multiple choice
portion the day before on Tuesday, March
6.
We are in the midst of scheduling for next
year. Student course selections will be used
to build the master schedule and determine
the number of sections offered for each
subject. Carefully weigh the teacher
recommendations along with the elective
that your child has chosen before making
your decision. Students currently in grades
6 and 7 should have already shared their
course requests with you. Any final
changes are due no later than June 19.
Current 8th graders will bring their high
school course requests home with their 3rd
qtr. report card. If you have questions

about the Program of Studies and anything
related to this process, please call your
child’s guidance counselor. The Program of
Studies is not printed in paper form, but can
be found on the LCPS/RBMS/ and Guidance
web-pages.
LCPS’s College in Six initiative will offer a
Tips & Strategies workshop for parents
featuring Mr. Brock Jolly, a financial planner
specializing in college tuition funding. The
event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13,
2012 at 7 p.m.in the River Bend Middle
School auditorium.
As part of our transition initiative, we will
once again transport our eighth grade class
to Potomac Falls High School for the annual
Activities Expo. This is an informational
presentation whereby students will be
familiarized with the myriad of clubs and
activities available. The Expo is set for
Friday, March 30.
We invite you to take an active role in your
child’s education. Please join us for lunch
or stop by to observe a class. When parents
are involved, their children achieve.

School Hours School hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:18 p.m. The
building will be open for students at 8:00 a.m.
Any student arriving before 8:00 a.m. may wait
in the cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 8:00
a.m. until 8:20 a.m. Students that are not
eating breakfast and all other students arriving
after 8:00 a.m. are to go to their appropriate
grade level House. All students will report to
their first block classroom at the 8:15 a.m. bell.
Visitor, Volunteer, and Late
Student Sign in Procedure All visitors need to stop by the main office upon
arrival. Each visitor, volunteer, and all late
students will log into the computer located on
the table to your left as you enter the Main
Office. A pass or name tag will automatically
print out. While at RBMS you will be required
to wear a visitor’s name tag. Students will take
their late pass to their House office and sign in
there as well. Please be prepared to show a
valid ID.
Student Drop off Procedure We have signs to direct traffic through our
parking lot. The school’s front parking
lots should not to be used as a morning drop off
area. Please follow the “ravens” to the area
designated for student drop off located on the
side of River Bend. This area was created for
the safety of our students. In order to maintain
a continuous flow of traffic, pull up as far as
possible and allow your student to exit the
vehicle at any point on the sidewalk. Be
considerate of others and move on once your
child disembarks. If you would like to wait with
your child until the doors open at 8 o’clock,
please move to a parking space. Please do not
park in the designated student drop off area.
Early Dismissals If at all possible, please send a note in with your
child the morning of an appointment. The
student’s house secretary will write a pass to
excuse the student at the appropriate time.
This will alleviate the need to disrupt the
classroom and your child will be waiting in the
front office when you arrive.
Students Tardy to School All students must be in their classroom by the
8:30 a.m. bell. Any student arriving to class
after the 8:30 a.m. bell will be considered
“tardy” and must sign in at the main office to
receive a “tardy” pass. A parent/guardian
should accompany their student to the office or
send a note with the student when arriving late
to school.
Attendance River Bend parents: we need your help! When
your child is absent, please call the attendance
line at (571) 434-3222 to notify the school. For
your convenience, this is a 24-hour answering
machine. An absence will be unexcused if the
school does not receive a note or a phone
message from the parent or guardian.
School Work Requests When students are absent, the parent/guardian
should call the Absentee Line at 571-434-3222
and inform the school of the reason for absence
and when they will return to school. Please do
not request class work on the Absentee Line. If
River Bend Middle School March 2011-2012

a student has missed three or more days, the
parent/guardian may request missed school
work from their child’s house secretary. The
class work will be available for pick up on the
following day. To make arrangements for an
extended absence, please contact your students
Counselor and the Attendance Secretary in the
Main Office at: 571-434-3220.

attending another school please notify your
child’s counselor as soon as possible.

attendance zone, please remember to stop by
the school to fill out a change of address form.
We will need to see proof of your new

settlement papers or mortgage statement.
To change a work or home telephone number,

Clinic Tips -“Sick Day Guidelines:
Making the Right Call When Your
Child Has a Cold” Should I keep my child home or send him or
her to school?
Consider keeping your child home if he or she:
• Has a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher
• Has been vomiting
• Has symptoms that prevent him or her from
participating in school, such as:
− Excessive tiredness or lack of appetite
− Productive coughing, sneezing
− Headache, body aches, earache
− Sore throat
A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but
a severe sore throat could be strep throat even
if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep
throat in children are headache and stomach
upset. Contact your pediatrician as your child
needs a special test to determine if it is strep
throat.
Keep your child home until his or her fever has
been gone for 24 hours without medication.
Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours.
Returning to school too soon may slow the
recovery process and expose others
unnecessarily to illness.
Does my child have the flu?
• The flu is serious! Call your pediatrician at the
first sign of flu symptoms, which typically come
on suddenly, including:
− High fever
− Chills
− Head ache, body aches, ear ache
− Nausea, vomiting
− Dry cough
If you’re unsure about the best way to treat
your child’s cold or flu, ask your school nurse,
doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare
provider.
How do I make my child feel better?
• Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and
put limits on TV watching.
• Encourage fluids; like water, soup, juice, and
ice.
River Bend Middle School March 2011-2012
6
• Help your child relax by reading him a story
and giving him plenty of TLC.
• Consider using a cool humidifier.
• When used as directed, children’s cough and
cold medicines help relieve cough and cold
symptoms while your child is getting better.
Read and follow the directions carefully and
give the exact recommended dose for the
child’s age. Do not use over-the-counter cough
and cold medications for children under the age
of four in the United States.
How can I prevent my child from getting a
cold?
• Teach your child to wash his or her hands
frequently using plenty of soap and warm
water. Proper hand-washing should take about
20 seconds or the time it takes to sing “Happy
Birthday” twice.
• Teach your child to cover coughs and sneezes
with a tissue or their sleeve.
• Keep the child’s environment tobacco free.
• Try to minimize the time your child spends
with other children who have cough or cold
symptoms.
• Pack easy-to-use products like disinfecting
wipes and hand sanitizers in your child’s
backpack to use when he or she is at school.
• Keep an annual well-child exam to follow
changes in your child’s health.
• Keep all of your child’s immunizations up-to-
date (The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention guidelines now recommend a flu
vaccine for most children aged 6 months up to
their 19th birthday).
• Serve a balanced diet with lots of fruits and
vegetables. Giving a daily vitamin may be
recommended by your pediatrician.
• After your child is feeling better, clean all
surfaces; wash the bedding and air out the
room.
• Keep surfaces like door knobs, phones,
remote controls, toys, and keyboards clean.
• Always make sure to consult your doctor or
school nurse if you have any questions.

River Bend Middle School March 2011-2012
7
Lea y siga
las instrucciones cuidadosamente y de la dosis
exacta recomendada para la edad del niño. No
River Bend Middle School March 2011-2012

• Asegúrese siempre de consultar a su doctor o
enfermera de la escuela si tiene alguna
pregunta.

Parent Link Tricia Anderson, Parent Liaison In recent years there has been a good deal of
research conducted on parent involvement and
the difference it can make to a child’s school
success. As I talked about last month, there
are many different ways to be involved, both
at school and at home. Hopefully all of you
have found ways of being involved that work
for you and your family. The studies of
families whose children are doing well in
school show that these families have many of
the same characteristics. I have no doubt that
most of you already do many, if not all of
these things, but consider these food for
thought.
Establish a daily family routine.
Examples: Providing time and a quiet
place to study, assigning
responsibility for household chores,
being firm about bedtime and having dinner together.
Monitor out-of-school activities.
Examples: Setting limits on TV
watching, checking up on children
when parents are not home, arranging
for after-school activities and
supervised care.
Model the value of learning, self-
discipline, and hard work.
Examples: Communicating through
questioning and conversation,
demonstrating that achievement comes from working hard.
Express high but realistic expectations
for achievement. Examples: Setting
goals and standards that are
appropriate for children's age and
maturity, recognizing and
encouraging special talents,
informing friends and family about
successes.
Encourage children's development/
progress in school. Examples:
Maintaining a warm and supportive
home, showing interest in children's
progress at school, helping with
homework, discussing the value of a
good education and possible career
options, staying in touch with
teachers and school staff.
Encourage reading, writing, and
discussions among family
members. Examples: Reading
together, listening to children read
and talking about what is being read,
talking about events in the news,
creating a family blog.

fiancée, Miss Adelaide.
Guys and Dolls is a fable about what happens to
gambling men and the women who long to tame
them. Set in the colorful world of New York City
in the mid 20th century, the romantic and funny
Guys and Dolls is populated with gangsters and
gamblers, missionary dolls and dancers, and one

American theatre that is guaranteed to have you
dancing in your seats.
