Fresh rhino horn. Base of rhino horn note cream coloured fleshy

growth and white coloured centre core

Dehorned rhino. Note colour variation from dark centre core, lighter

circle band, and darker colour towards outer circumference of horn.

Dried Rhino horns, please compare to fresh recovered rhino on 1st

page, colour has changed, but centre core and lighter bands are still

visible. Very important note hollow of base of horn, on horn 4th from

left. Hollow base is not so visible on 1st horn from left which appears

to have been sawed straight through.

This manual is assist members of the South African Police, Customs

and selected security companies contracted at Airports and other

ports of entry, in the identification of rhino horn.

Rhino horns and contraband ivory are often found wrapped in silver

paper in an attempt to circumvent x-ray screening equipment.

Rhino and ivory has also been intercepted in Kenya coated with

Cayenne pepper, and sprayed with security pepper spray in an

attempt to foil trained ivory and rhino horn dogs. In all cases it

failed.

Organized crime syndicates are now processing ivory in country of

source in an attempt to circumvent detection, ivory bangles, rings

statues and chopsticks have been intercepted in South Africa, Kenya

and Tanzania.
