The Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarship program offers entering Brooklyn College freshman with outstanding records $4,000 annually toward the cost of tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study. Recipients are selected based on merit demonstrated by SAT scores and high school performance. In
order to be considered, a student generally must have a combined score of at least 1,200 on the SAT and a 90 percent high school average. Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarships are made possible by unrestricted contributions to the foundation’s annual fund.
Student Scholarships, Awards, and Prizes Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarship
Nearly 58% of Brooklyn College students come from households earning $50,000 or less annually. With an estimated annual tuition of $6,030, over 56% of our students rely on some form of financial aid, and nearly 50% must work in order to support costs related to tuition and school. Donations in support of scholarships, awards, and prizes are critical in providing our deserving students with affordable access to excellent higher education. The following pages highlight various scholarships, awards, and prizes established through generous contributions to the Brooklyn College Foundation.
“With every day that passes by, I am one day closer to achieving a goal
and living a dream that I have had ever since I could remember. I am
studying to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, while taking
pre-med classes. This scholarship has allowed me to focus on the path of
becoming a physician, and to one day help countless numbers of people to
be healthy, and in turn, be happy.” —Samantha Vouyioklis

Shortly before Ruth Turim ’58 passed away, she and her youngest daughter, Linda Krasner, joked about what they would do if they won the lottery. “I would set up a fund at Brooklyn College—if I had a lot of money, that’s what I would do,” her daughter quoted Turim as saying. “My mother’s eyes filled with tears as she spoke,” Krasner said. “Brooklyn College meant that much to her.”
As an honors student at Eastern District High School in Brooklyn, Turim dreamed of attending Brooklyn College. She was admitted during the height of the Depression, but could not afford to attend. Instead she went to work, married, and started a family.
Her oldest daughter, Frances, entered Brooklyn College in 1952. During her second year, Frances presented the bursar with her mother’s original letter of admission, which her mother had treasured for some 20 years, and asked if the college would honor it. The college did.
In 1958, Turim graduated on the dean’s list with a B.A. in education. She began teaching immediately after graduation, starting a distinguished 18-year career in education. She also earned a master’s degree in elementary education from the college.
Turim lived to the age of 99, and within days of her passing her family set up a fund in her memory. The Ruth Turim ’58 Award is given annually to a student, preferably female, who demonstrates academic promise and who needs the support to complete her education. Casey Denaro was named the award’s inaugural recipient during the Fall 2014 semester.
“I was overjoyed to learn that I
would receive the Jules Glaser ’45
and Barbara Glaser Scholarship.
I am pursuing my dream of
graduating from one of the best
speech programs in the nation,
here at Brooklyn College. I hope to
one day open my own practice and
work with non-verbal and autistic
children. This scholarship serves as
a reminder that I should keep going,
and that there are many kind-
hearted people who believe in me.”

“I am an international student from the South
American country of Guyana, and I consider receiving
the STARR Foundation Scholarship as one of the
greatest achievements of my life. My ambition is
to become a software engineer, and a computer
science degree is the first step toward achieving this
goal. In Guyana, the local currency exchange rate is
approximately USD $1 to GYD $200. Thus, the total
monetary amount of this scholarship equates to about
a fifth of my family’s annual income. I am so happy
and grateful that I was considered for this generous
award. My family will now be able to focus on my
younger brother’s education.”

David Sive ’43, who died in March of 2014, was
an idealist and an environmentalist. While only a
sophomore, he wrote an elegant letter to The New York
Times, complaining that the newspaper’s outdoors
column was all about tips for hunting and fishing, and
never about “a breathtaking climb above the timberline;
of a glorious night spent among fragrant balsam; of a
wonderful canoe trip through the wilds of Ontario; of
an adventurous night camping out at 30 below.” As he
grew older, Sive’s youthful idealism did not fade, and as
an attorney, through a series of landmark legal victories,
he pioneered a way of using legal means to prevent
the despoiling of nature. Sive is known as the “Father
of Environmental Law,” and Sive Paget Reisel, the firm
he founded in 1962, is the leader in environmental law
practice in the United States. As the first in his family to
graduate college, he keenly appreciated the challenges—
financial and otherwise—of first generation college
students. In 2013, David and Mary Sive set up the David
Sive ’43 Award for first generation college students.
The award helps pay for tuition and supplies for science
students who maintain a G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher, who
qualify for financial aid, and who take summer courses
at the college. David Sive credited his Brooklyn College
education as the foundation for everything that came
after. With this generous gift to the Brooklyn College
Foundation, his family makes it easier for others to
follow his shining example.

Over the years, the importance of internships has increased. Not only do students with internship experience receive, on average, a 20% higher starting salary, but internships are also directly linked to hiring and corporate recruitment. Despite the growing importance of internships, 50% of internships are unpaid.
This means that many Brooklyn College students simply cannot afford to participate in these internships without a stipend. To address this issue, many alumni and friends have made restricted donations to the Brooklyn College Foundation to finance stipends for students participating in low-paying or non-paying internships. The following internship funds enable deserving Brooklyn College students to attain critical work experience that will leverage their education and lay the groundwork for future employment and success:

“It was such a delight finding out I was the winner
of the Maureen and Robert O’Hara Award. This
support will allow me to expand my knowledge
within the information technology field, gain
efficient hands-on experience, and network with
other professionals. I will put this award toward
transportation, daily meals, and professional
attire. Rather than worrying about my daily
expenses, I will be able to focus on being the best
intern I can be.” — Amanda Vasquez, recipient of the Maureen and
Robert O’Hara Award
“It took me a very long time to find the academic
and professional path that I wanted to take.
When I started college I felt completely lost. So I
decided to take a break from academics. I started
a family during the time I was not in school. I
have gone back, and I am now an earth science
major exploring our world and everything in it.
Everything about this major makes me happy.
Studying rock and mineral samples in the
laboratories, collecting fossils in the field, mapping
GIS coordinates—all awaken my curiosity. The
Marge Magner Internship Stipend allowed me to
go into the field with top tier paleontologists and
geologists, to work with them side by side, and to
experience firsthand something that others only
dream of doing. Most importantly, this gives me
hope that after my journey and its many trials
I can truly become someone and be successful.”

Study Abroad and Research Fellowships
Incorporating study abroad and research experiences into a college education helps students earn credit toward their degree, strengthen their professional résumé, improve their foreign language skills, and broaden their perspectives on the world. Faculty who pursue research and scholarship overseas bring these experiences back to
the classroom. In an effort to expand and deepen international educational and research opportunities for those in financial need, our generous alumni and friends have established study abroad and research fellowships. These funds provide Brooklyn College students and faculty with the necessary support to study and perform research outside of Brooklyn College and, in many cases, abroad:
“The confidence and financial security that this
generous fund provides Honors Academy students
encourages me to relentlessly explore my passions.
I was born in the United States, and I grew up in
Cairo, Egypt. Incorporating international experiences
into my future plans is very important to me. I am
traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, to study freedom of
the press and intern with the news organization
The Daily Sabah. This award will assist me in costs
that I will incur spending 10 weeks abroad. With
the generous financial support of the Christoph M.
Kimmich Fund, I can pursue my studies, career,
and passions more courageously.”
— Lila Hassan, recipient of the Christoph M. Kimmich Award for the Brooklyn College Honors Academy

“When I heard about the Zicklin Summer Fellowship, I thought, “This is too good to
be true!” When I found out I had been chosen to become a Zicklin Summer Fellow,
I felt ecstatic, grateful, and happily surprised. Because of the generosity of this
fellowship, I was able to enroll in three classes related to my concentration in general
science and a history core class. I will be able to graduate according to plan.”

Generous donors and friends have established the following funds to provide financial incentives to attract scholars and practitioners who are leaders in their fields to visit and host lecture series at Brooklyn College:

“My study at the Louvre permitted me to observe
firsthand numerous works of art from the early
Roman imperial period. I was able to view an
entire gallery of the Early Empire, a fragment of
the Ara Pacis that some scholars believe represents
Augustus’s daughter Julia, and additional Roman
mythological paintings. The opportunity to view and
compare significant ancient Roman art first-hand
has given me new insights into my subject and has
been an invaluable educational experience.”

How You Can Support Brooklyn CollegeThe Brooklyn College Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations to help further the college’s mission of providing high-quality, affordable education to our students. There are many ways that donors can support our work.
The Annual FundGifts to the annual fund provide critical unrestricted operating supports making it possible for the foundation to respond to the immediate and evolving needs of Brooklyn College. Common uses of annual fund dollars include student scholarships, internship stipends and travel abroad support, funding for faculty research, as well as school improvements. Unrestricted annual fund gifts are essential and benefit more than 16,000 students each year.
The Boylan SocietyThe Boylan Society is the Brooklyn College Foundation’s monthly giving program. When you join the Boylan Society, you authorize the foundation to receive a monthly tax-deductible gift from your checking account or by credit card. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide dependable, enduring, and reliable support to your alma mater. You will no longer need to be concerned with renewal payments or reminder mailings. And since automatic monthly gifts do not require outreach efforts to secure, they are the most efficient way to sustain the level of academic excellence at Brooklyn College.
Corporations and FoundationsThe Brooklyn College Foundation works with faculty and college leadership to identify, build, and steward relationships with corporations and foundations to ensure long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships. We aim to understand the needs of corporations and foundations and connect them with appropriate solutions at Brooklyn College. With a world-class faculty, a diverse and talented student body, and strong academic and co-curricular programs, Brooklyn College offers significant investment opportunities.
Establishing a Restricted FundA restricted fund helps to meet the needs of Brooklyn College and our students while reflecting the specific interests or desires of a donor. Restricted funds may support student scholarships and awards, and travel stipends, as well as faculty research and endowed professorships. Establishing and naming a restricted fund can be a special way to honor or memorialize a loved one’s interests or accomplishments, honor a former student and/or faculty member, or encourage students in a particular academic area. The Brooklyn College Foundation welcomes donations to establish and name new restricted funds, as well as donations of any size in support of already existing restricted funds.
Gifts OnlineIt is now easier than ever to make a donation to Brooklyn College. Just log on to the Brooklyn College Foundation website, www.brooklyncollegefoundation.org, and use our secure connection to make a tax-deductible gift with your credit or debit card with a MasterCard, American Express, Visa, or Discover logo. We also accept automatic fund transfers from your checking or savings account.
The Legacy Society: Planned Gifts Members of the Legacy Society share our vision of academic excellence for future generations by making a provision for the college in their estate planning. The Brooklyn College Foundation offers several future-oriented investment opportunities, including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts or life insurance. Legacy Society members may also make planned gifts in the form of a bequest.
Matching Gifts: Double the impact of Your DonationIf your company matches employee contributions to higher education, you may be able to seek a match for your gift to the Brooklyn College Foundation. In order to find out if your company provides matching gifts please visit our online matching gift search engine on the donate page of the foundations website for further instructions or check with www.brooklyncollegefoundation.org. Your human resources office can provide specific instructions about how to seek a company matching gift.
Naming OpportunitiesBrooklyn College offers a wide spectrum of naming opportunities. Individuals or groups of donors may select from a menu of naming options ranging from commemorative bricks in front of our new West Quad Center, to benches near our beloved lily pond, to classrooms or lecture halls around campus. These are very special opportunities to leave behind a legacy at the college while contributing to the success of future Brooklyn College students.
Tributes and MemorialsThe Brooklyn College Foundation Tribute and Memorial Program was created in response to alumni requests as a means to offer special recognition to those who have made a difference in their lives. A donation to the Tribute and Memorial Program gives you the opportunity to honor a loved one, friend, business associate or caregiver. Gifts have been made to commemorate special occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries or retirement. The program is a meaningful way to express feelings of remembrance or gratitude.
