Strategy and approach Define vision for each of three station areas consistent with
Restons overall vision and planning principles.
Incentivize development with adequate growthopportunities.
Sustain if not improve quality of life for the rest of Reston.

Transportation Contain traffic congestion on key north-south arteries. Develop robust transit system to link with Metro Complete Restons bike and pedestrian pathways Develop & apply a rigorous transportation demand management
(TDM) program
Density and mix in TOD station areas Restons roads can not support too much density, even with majoradded roadway improvements.
Mix (more residential) is a great way to contain congestion.
Amenities and infrastructure Sustain if not improve the richness of Restons amenities Seeking major performing arts center, large central park, major
university campus Implementation
Planning without implementation is empty. Extremely complex issue set that the task force has not and
generally refuses to address.

Traffic congestion is the most critical problem. Only three crossings of the Dulles Corridorand room for
only three more.
Developers reluctant to reduce development levels &
change mix to point where traffic can be accommodated. Landowners are unwilling to provide space needed
for infrastructure & amenities within TOD areas. Open space for parks and recreation.
Schools for added children.
A big, new problem: Redevelopment of a golfcourse near 2 stations into 7,900 or more housingunits.
