RENDERING USING AUTODESK INVENTOR STUDIOBy Neha Gidwani

The object of this tutorial is to make lifelike renderings using Autodesk Inventor Studio.

Rendering of a Toast Rack

In this tutorial we will be rendering a Toast Rack. The rendered image is shown below.

Tools used in Inventor Studio for rendering:

Each surface style corresponds to an Autodesk Inventor color style in which basic material properties are duplicated from Autodesk Inventor, but additional properties are available in Autodesk Inventor Studio.

A lighting style consists of one or more discrete light objects, each with its own set of properties, which is used to change the lighting effects in a part or assembly. This tool can be used to enhance the display of colors of the object (part/assembly) to make it appear more realistic.

A scene style consists of background geometry, colors, or images that appear during rendering.

A camera can be defined using this tool to focus on a particular aspect of the object (part/assembly).

This tool is used to render the image using the surface, lighting, and scene styles defined.

This tool is used to view the last rendered image.

Procedure:

1. Download the zip folder ‘Render.zip’ from the website http://leake.ge.uiuc.edu . Create a new folder and extract the contents of the zip file (Toast_Rack.ipt) into the folder.

2. Start Autodesk Inventor Professional and from the Standard toolbar click Open

and select Toast_Rack.ipt. Now from the Standard toolbar select Perspective Camera

The toast rack is shown in Figure 2.

3. Now from the Menu bar click on Applications and select Inventor Studio

4. In the Standard toolbar open the Color Dialog box and select Chrome. This changes the color of the part to chrome.

5. In the Panel bar select Scene Styles . This opens a dialog box, scroll down and select XY Reflective GP. Right click on it and select New Style.This opens another dialog box asking for a new style name. Accept ‘Copy of XY Reflective GP’ and click Ok. A copy of the existing scene style is made so that any changes adopted in it don’t affect the original style.

Now under Colors, click the Top Color, this opens a Color dialog box. Select the color as shown in Figure 6 and click Ok.

Then click Done.

6. Now in the Panel bar select Render Image . This opens a dialog box. Under the General tab , select width height to 800 by 600. This can be

done by clicking on Select Output Size . Select Current view for Camera, Pleasant view for Lighting Style and Copy of XY Reflective GP for Scene Style.

Under the Quality tab , select High Antialiasing and put a check mark for True Reflection.

7. In the Render Output window, select ‘Save Rendered Image’ to save the rendered image. The rendered image can be saved as a BMP, JPEG or PNP image file.

8. Notice that in the rendered image, the reflection may not be completely visible.

Hence, select Pan from the Standard toolbar and pan the object in the Graphics window. Now you can repeat step 6 to obtain the rendered image.

Rendering of a Garlic Press

Now we will be rendering a Garlic Press. The rendered image is shown below.

Procedure:

1. Download the zip folder ‘Render.zip’ from the website http://leake.ge.uiuc.edu . Create a new folder and extract the contents of the zip file (Garlic Press) into the folder.

2. Start Autodesk Inventor Professional and from the Standard toolbar click Open

and select GP.iam. 3. From the Menu bar click on Format and select Styles Editor.

This opens a Styles and Standards Editor dialog box. Expand Color and select Gray(Light). Right click on it and select New Style.

This opens a dialog box asking for a new style name. Accept ‘Copy of Gray(Light)’ and click Ok.

Now in the Styles and Standard Editor dialog box, under Texture, click on Choose.

This opens another dialog box, select Metal_8 for the material texture and click Ok.

Now in the Styles and Standard Editor dialog box click Save and then click Done.

4. In the Browser panel, press the control key from the keyboard and select GP Handle:1, Piston:1 and Top GP Handle:1.

Now from the Standard toolbar, click the Color Dialog box

and select Copy of Gray(Light).

5. From the Menu bar click on Applications and select Inventor Studio.

6. In the Panel bar select Scene Styles. This opens a dialog box, scroll down and select Forest (Gradient). Right click on it and select New Style. This opens another dialog box asking for a new style name. Accept ‘Copy of Forest (Gradient)’ and click Ok. Then click Done.

7. Now in the Scene Styles window, Copy of Forest (Gradient) is activated. Select

Image to insert an image for the backdrop, which will be used for rendering. This opens a dialog box. Select Cloud2 and click Ok.

Now click Save in the Scene Styles dialog box and then click Done.

8. In the Panel bar, select Render Image . Under the General tab select width height to 800 by 600. Select Current view for Camera, Table Top for Lighting Style and Copy of Forest (Gradient) for Scene Style. Under the Quality tab, select High Antialiasing and put a check mark for True Reflection. Now click on Render.

image. If the entire image including the reflection is not visible, select Pan from the Standard toolbar and pan the object in the graphics window. Repeat step 8 to obtain the rendered image.
