2 Different Meanings

1. An action that reflects back on the subject.-Yo me lavo

I wash (myself)-Ella se levanta

She gets up. 2. An action in which 2 or more subjects interact.-Nosotras nos reunimos por la tarde.

We get together in the afternoon.-Ellas se miran.

They look at each other.

Examples

• I wake at 9:00.Yo me despierto a las nueve.

• He showers at 3:00.Él se ducha a las tres.

• We dress at 4:00.Nosotros nos vestimos a las seis y diez.

What to do…

If the verb that is reflexive is part of a verb phrase and isn’t conjugated, add the reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, etc.) to the end of it (the

verb).

Examples

• I want to eat breakfast. Yo quiero desayunarme.

• He is going to dress himself. Él va a vestirse.

• We are going to stay.Nosotros vamos a querdarnos.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

Dormirse = to fall asleep

• I always sleep 8 hours. Siempre duermo

8 horas. Dormir = to sleep

• I almost always fall asleep when I study.

Casi siempre me duermo cuando estudio.

Ponerse = to put on

• I put on my shoes.Me pongo los

zapatos. Poner = to put or to place

• I put the shoes in the locker. Pongo los zapatos en el

armario.

The meaning of the sentence can change if you use the reflexive pronoun.

• Using the reflexive pronoun expresses a reciprocal action

-the idea of each other.

• Llamo a mi amigo. I call my friend.

• Mi amigo y yo nos llamamos. My friend and I call each other.

Reflexive vs. Non-reflexive

• With non-reflexive the subject does the action to someone or something else.

• With reflexive the subject does the action to itself.

Where do they go?

• Put reflexive pronouns before conjugated verbs.

• Attach reflexive pronouns to affirmative commands.

• Put reflexive pronouns before negative commands.
