Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 17 Issue 17
Friday 9th June 2017
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The Queen’s birthday long weekend is upon us and it
looks like the wet weather is going to continue for the
entire weekend and large parts of next week. Perfect
weather for all students to spend time studying in prepa-
ration for their Half-Yearly Examinations.
Years 10 and 11 start today, with the rest of the school
starting next Friday. Middle School students are in the
midst of revision week where they are ensuring that they
have all the required notes and have a complete under-
standing of the expectations for each examination. All
their teachers will be making sure of this in this week’s les-
sons, so careful attention and focus is the order of the
day.
Students may leave school directly after their exam each
day in order to better prepare for the next day’s exams.
Should students not be able to get home they are wel-
come to stay at school until 4:30pm, in the Library or
classrooms where they can study.
Please be reminded students will write exams until the last
day of term on 23rd June. Feedback and reports will then
occur in Term 3.
Some amazing results that students have achieved
recently include:
Our Junior Dance Company group have represented
Reddam over the last two weekends in various Dance
eisteddfods and have been doing us proud. On May
27th, the group competed in the ―I'd Rather Be Dancing‖
Eisteddfod, where they received a Highly Commended.
This was the first time the ensemble performed this piece
and their first time performing together as a group. The
competition was of a very high standard and our danc-
ers did extremely well to be acknowledged. Last Satur-
day, June 3rd, the Company performed in the Extreme
Dance Competition where they were awarded 3rd
Place! The improvement in their performance in such a
short time is amazing and they were certainly amongst
the best performing schools on the day. The Junior
Dance Company is comprised of our strongest dancers
from Year 7-Year 9 and we are so proud of their achieve-
ments so far. We are looking forward to seeing more of
this kind of success that has come with their excellent
commitment and plenty of talent. A big congratulations
must go to Emily Knight who has worked tirelessly with the
Company group since Term 1. She has done a fantastic
job with our young dancers and has been instrumental in
the group's success.
Mr Tallis reports that The Senior Jazz Ensemble competed
in the Sydney Eisteddfod last Friday the 2nd of June,
achieving second place. Its members, students from
years 7-10, continue to develop as performers and impro-
visers. Conductor Joel Woolf is exceptionally proud of this
ensemble and is excited about the future development
of Jazz and Improvisation at Reddam House.
The Chess Club started and organised by Mr Smith is go-
ing from strength to strength and students have been
representing the school in competitions for a number of
weeks now. He has proudly reported on the ever improv-
ing team who started the first few weeks being soundly
beaten only to bounce back in the last two weeks. They
continue to improve and play with all their might.
Alisa Tyshchenko continues to dominate NSW fencing
competitions winning the gold medal at the U15 NSW
Schools Fencing Championship last weekend.
Corey Ross in Year 9 has made the NSWCIS side for Touch
Football after representing AICES.
Some students have amazing opportunities awaiting them
in this holiday:
Fox Bengtsson and Jonny Ress are going to Israel to play
Soccer (for Australia) in the Maccabiah Games. Zachary
Sapsford is also traveling to Israel to compete in the Mac-
cabiah games representing Australia at Futsal.
I wish all Reddam families a relaxing
Queen’s Birthday weekend and
trust that our students will use the
opportunity to settle down to pre-
paring for their upcoming examina-
tions.
Have a good week,
Dave Pitcairn

CHESS
For lack of a better phrase... Winning Feels good.
2 weeks ago, we welcomed Marcellin Collage to Red-
dam House for Round 4 of the NSW Interschool Chess
League - Eastern Division. We felt good in our prepara-
tions and had enjoyed a week of positive thinking. As we
waited we argued about the best way to position our
desks and whether or not having the blinds up, looking
over the Sydney skyline, would act as a distraction to our
opponents or whether such a sight would inspire them to
victory. We decided to keep the blinds closed.
As our 4 junior champions began to play; Yoni, Rhys,
Rachel and Gabriel, the room once again fell silent and I
was left with the real understanding of what the students
were undertaking. It did not matter how they had gone
before and it did not matter who they were playing
against. Each and every chess match is won and lost
within that single hour on a Friday afternoon. Anyone
can win on their day and everyone can be humiliated in
defeat.
As the week before, we played well, better than well,
fantastically! Yoni, Rhys and Gabriel came away with the
big win while Rachel, who started playing first and fin-
ished playing last came away with a rare loss. Thea was
gallant in defeat and we were very proud of her effort.
This was only our 2nd team victory of the year but also
the 2nd in a row. Once again we were victorious. Once
again, they made the school proud.
Round 5:
We were riding high, 2 weeks of team victories in a row, 3
weeks since our last loss. It seemed so foreign to us. The
kids felt unstoppable which is why what happened next
was so strange. For the last 5 weeks I have attended eve-
ry game but for this week I was unable to attend. It was
an away game at the Conservatorium High School and
one of our dear team parents, Karin gave up her time
and effort to get the players there on time as I was not
able. What follows is the events as they were experi-
enced by me via text.
Me 3:45 "Wish them Luck"
Karin 3:55 "Will do"
Karin 4:20 "Rachel has won"
I jump up from my seat in a crowded room. I am stared
at. I care not.
Karin 4:25 "Gabriel and Rhys have gone down fighting"
I bite my lip. The person sitting across from me asks if I am
okay? I suggest they ask again in 20 min.
Karin: 4:27 "Yoni is holding the fort"
Though I knew he was only playing a game of chess. In
this moment I pictured Yoni clad in armour, surrounded
by enemies, slashing at their hearts and ordering his
troops to attack. I felt we were safe.
Karin 5:28 "Yoni went down fighting"
I sigh.
While winning is important, I think all us reading this will
agree it is not the most important thing. What is important
is fighting on, never giving up, waving your flag proudly
and supporting one another no matter the outcome. A
huge thanks to Karin for taking the team for the week.

REDDAM HOUSE FOOTBALL
Open Boys v Barker College: drew 2-2
The Open Boys had their first bus trip for the season, mak-
ing the long trek up to Waitara last Saturday. The schlep
seemed to tax the boys who started very sluggishly and
soon found themselves a goal down. We gave the oppo-
sition far too much room and they gladly took the oppor-
tunity to move the ball around and make us look decid-
edly pedestrian. We gradually found our legs and a cou-
ple of goals from Tobi Fox either side of half time saw us
take the lead 2-1. But Barker were far from spent and only
a brilliant save from Ben Roberts kept our unbeaten rec-
ord intact.
So, not our best performance of the season but it was a
good day out with the boys, capped off with a nice
lunch on the way home.

DANCE NEWS
A big congratulations to Ms Emily Knight and our Junior
Dance Company members for their impressive success at
the Eisteddfod over the last two weeks.
On Saturday 27th May, the group competed in the ―I'd
Rather Be Dancing‖ Eisteddfod on the Northern Beaches.
The competition was tough and included 10 different
schools from various parts of Sydney so we were delight-
ed that our dancers received a ―Highly Commended‖
score for their very polished performance on the day. To
be acknowledged amongst so many competitors was a
wonderful achievement for the group who were perform-
ing as an ensemble for the very first time that day.
The following week, on Saturday June 3rd, our dancers
took to the stage once more, this time taking out 3rd
place!!! It was clear that the Reddam House ensemble
was one of the strongest groups of the day and we were
particularly pleased to see how quickly our dancers were
improving with each performance.
A big thank you to Ms Knight for working so hard with the
company members to prepare them for these competi-
tions and a huge 'well done!' to the group's performers
who represented Reddam House so beautifully. You have
done us proud!!!
Students involved were:

Congratulations again to Kai Mashimo, Zoe Gross (Yr 10),
Ari Banos, Emily Wang and Charlie Roberts (Yr 9) who
represented Reddam at the Intermediate semi-final at
Monte Saint Angelo last week. They were expertly pre-
pared thanks to coach and professional improviser Harry
Milas and will now represent the school at the 2017 Thea-
tresports Schools Challenge Grand Final at the Enmore
Theatre. Only 8 teams from across the Sydney, Central
Coast and Illawarra regions make it through to the grand
final so this is a wonderful achievement or these talented
students. The grand final is a hugely entertaining evening,
so for those hardworking students looking for a fun-filled
study break – come along and support the team!
