Welcome one and all to the 2015 National Devon Show and Sale. Thank you to our exhibitors who have hauled these beautiful cattle in from all over the country to be here. Thank you to our hosts, Bill, Nancy, and Clifton Walker, our esteemed judges Vic Edwards and Alison Heap, our auctioneer, Brian Curless, and the Board of Directors of RDUSA for working together to create such a wonderful program for us this year.
Let’s talk about this year, this is the fourth consecutive year our industry has seen record prices for live and feeder cattle and this trend show no signs of slowing. Droughts are breaking, liquidations have stopped and the rebuilding process has begun. As breeders old and new either start up or restart their herds, they have an opportunity to do so with a variety of genetic packages from a variety of breeds within any given species. Of all breeds and species involved in livestock, I have truly found no greater joy that the pleasure derived from breeding and keeping Devon cattle. Devon cattle are fertile, efficient, and easy. When I say easy I mean it. Devon are easy fleshing, easy keepers, easy handling, easy calving, and easy mothers. Devon Bulls are equally easy to manage and so prepotent that they can quickly change the phenotype and character of a typical commercial cow herd and by doing so add value to the offspring and increase the meat quality and consistency.
I invite you to visit with breeders and walk amongst the animals you won’t be disappointed. Lastly, let me say, congratulations! You have found Devon, the search is over.

Our farm has been in the Walker family since before 1880, hence the name Walker Century Farms. Bill’s grandfather was a cotton farmer with a large family who all helped on the farm. I have enjoyed raising cattle since returning to Anderson and beginning my medical practice in 1976. At this time, Nancy began Graduate school at Clemson University to learn about farming, leading to a Ph. D. in plant genetics and a career at Clemson.
Ten years ago was a pivotal time in our lives. Because of health problems we took a serious look at what comprised healthy food. This led to a deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture. We purchased a small nuclear herd of Red Devon cattle from Charlie and Martha Trantham. Over the last ten years our farm has evolved. We now have a purebred Red Devon herd and have met Devon breeders worldwide and have become part of the Devon family. We have an on-farm market where we sell grass-fed beef, pastured pork and other local products, and a Pavilion where we host events on our farm.
We look forward to hosting our Devon family and meeting newcomers interested in local food, grassfed beef and especially Devon cattle. Relationships and networking with other Devon breeders represents an essential aspect in the development of our farming operation. We look forward to sharing what we have learned and learning from you.
Best Regards,
Bill, Nancy, and Clifton Walker

I would like to thank Red Devon USA for the honour of judging at the Fall Conference of the cattle for show & sale.
To build for you a picture of the type of animal we prefer, in general we prefer the longer bodied type of Devon that was popular in England 100 years ago.
Our cattle enterprise in Australia is a herd of pure registered Devons with an annual calf drop of 300-320. Within that herd we maintain a range of animals of differing types ranging from frame 3 to 6 and appreciate the breeding value of these differing types. Our 50 best male calves are retained as sale bulls. Steer calves are grown on and finished on native pastures or green crop grazing to meet the highest Ausmeat graded meat standards. Carcass weight 440 to 600lb, even fat cover of 6 to 10 mm on rib & rump, muscularity average or above, meat colour bright, with milk or 2 teeth only. We are proud of the impeccable performance of our Devons achieving premium meat quality targets. Most surplus females are sold privately as breeding stock.
Most of the bulls we sell are by private sale from the paddock, some are sold at combined bull sales so these are supplementary fed for attractive sale presentation. We also show selected animals in major exhibitions to keep the breed in the public eye, these animals also have additional preparation for best presentation. Our climate, being similar to Texas, with long dry periods, means supplementation in drought periods is essential.
When we look for correct structured animals we mean the traits that allow an animal to be sound and productive into its teenage years. The strength and constitution traits that fit an animal to be a regular breeder through flush and stressful seasons, legs and feet correctly shaped to not cause breakdown, udders and teats on cows that are trouble free.
In short we will be seeking the soundest structured animals in each class that exhibit traits suggesting they are above breed average performers and show traits consistent with the Devon Breed Standard. Such animals may not be the fattest on show.
We like animals with a capacious frame, strong straight top line, not heavy boned or course and no muscle seams evident as seen in some European breeds.
Like all who breed Red Ruby Devons, we appreciate docility in cattle and look forward to appreciating with you the good traits of animals presented before us.
Yours Sincerely,Vic Edwards, Vix DevonsAlison Heap, Gowan Ross Devons , Australia
