Reading is one of life’s great pleasures but sometimes we need some help along the way, so here are our suggestions. For the most part, we have included books which the girls may not have come across or read already. We have deliberately included both fiction and non-fiction. Some books are easier to read than others; there are old favourites and some which have only recently been published. We don’t expect the girls to have read everything on the list by September but we do want and expect them to read widely.

Sixth Form students should be in the habit of reading daily newspapers and subject-specific magazines. It is worth following the news on reliable websites such as www.parliament.uk and some subject-specific websites are also useful https://newsademic.com/, http://plus.maths.org/content/ and www.kindernetz.de/minitz/, for example. Watching foreign-language films is a good way of improving language skills: La Gloire de Mon Pere by Marcel Pagnol and Sophie Scholl in German are particularly recommended. Some may find Barrington Stoke useful (https://www.barringtonstoke.co.uk/) for dyslexia-friendly books designed specifically to avoid visual confusion.

The more students do out of lessons the easier they will find them. It is a good idea to visit museums, galleries, and sites of historical interest over the summer, while also finding time to watch plays and attending concerts. The Art Department recommend the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, The Royal Academy of Arts, The Hayward Gallery, The National Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, and The White Cube Galleries. Similarly, it makes sense to see as much live theatre as possible over the summer. Anything at the National Theatre, The Royal Court, The Globe, Young Vic or Battersea Arts Centre would be particularly recommended and if students are in London a prom would be worth seeing.
