What a better way to end another fantastic year of performances and oppor-tunities at Enter CIC than with a performance entitled 'Christmas Spirit'. This year, Enter CIC’s Christmas performance was a showcase of the work that the young people have been

involved with throughout 2013. The performances took place at the Ferryhill Methodist Church and The Enter Centre. The group were delighted to welcome friends and families from the local community and an array of dignitar-

ies to the events. The performances featured a range of songs including the fantastic sacred Christmas carol ‘Gaudete’. The young people performed acapella and astounded the audience with their rendition of the carol. At the end of the Wednesday evening performance Mrs Sue Snowden, Lord-Lieu-tenant of County Durham, addressed the audience and spoke about the outstanding performance and strengths of the young people. This was seconded by Mrs Pauline Charlton who praised them for their dedication and hard work, not only on the stage but in their communities.A spokesperson commented, “In 2013 Enter CIC members have performed at some amazing venues, including Durham Cathedral, but it was wonderful to see them performing for their own community on home ground. A lovely end to the year. “We already have some fantastic and unique perfor-mance opportunities lined up for 2014 for the young people. If anyone would like get involved, please give the Enter office a call on 01740 655437.”

Ethan John Lawrence Campbell, 18, from Kensington Gardens in Ferryhill has been given a six month condi-tional discharge after an attempted break in.The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday 20th July, when Campbell had left an ‘all-night’ drinking party to purchase more alcohol and found, on his return, he had been locked out. Campbell then attempted to break

back into the house on Stevenson Street, using a chisel he borrowed from a nearby workman to prise open the front door.Campbell pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage and stated that this was “a drunken mistake” at the Magistrates Court in Newton Aycliffe. He was also ordered to pay £20 compensation to the homeowner, with whom he is still friends, and £40 court costs.

Weather permitting, the Ferryhill Six will be holding a charity stall on Friday 20th December on Ferryhill Market.“Come along and support our fundraising for Breast Cancer Research,” said one

of the ladies. There will be lots of goodies and bargains as well as a selection of cakes, jams, marmalades and chutneys. There will also be some hand knitted craft items.

On Sunday 8th of December, 14 of New Dance Genera-tion’s dancers travelled to North Shields to compete in the UDO regional cham-pionships for street dance. The dancers had rehearsed for 11 weeks on the run up to the competition at Ferryhill Community Hub, where they also attend regular street dance classes. ‘Mini Generation’ was the team name for ten Ferryhill based dancers who competed in the under 10’s beginner category. They

performed with attack, energy and 100% effort which all paid off when the group were placed 3rd in the whole of the North East! This also meant that Mini Generation got a place to dance in the UDO World finals in Glasgow next year! An amazing achievement for the children and dance school, which has only been running for 10 months. Next to perform were the solo dancers, Eboni Seal from Ferryhill and Alfie Byrne, Ellie Hilton and Ellie-mae Wharton from

Fishburn. The dancers where up against some very stiff competition but all danced well. Alfie and Ellie-mae where re-called but unfortunately didn’t get placed. At the end of the very long day, the duo Tegan Walmsley and Olivia Taylor-Sayers danced in the under 12 Novice duo category. Their hard work paid off and the pair came 5th from over 20 different acts giving them an opportu-nity to dance in the world finals.

Trading standards officers are hoping their ‘twelve days of Christmas’ will be a big hit with festive shoppers. The alternative to the traditional ‘twelve days’ is packed with top tips on avoiding pitfalls when buying those last minute gifts, both online and in the high street. They include a “ten labels leaping” warning to make sure any branded designer clothes are not counterfeit, “five winning gold rings” about not being conned by prize draws or lotteries and even a “panto that does not exist”, making sure any tickets you purchase as gifts are genuine. The tips also cover advice on credit card protection and avoiding loan sharks.Joanne Waller, head of environment, health and consumer protection at Durham County Council said, “This is a traditional time of year for busy high streets and floods of online orders, but it is not always the season of goodwill for shoppers, as they could get tangled up in scams and rip-offs.“These twelve shopping tips of Christmas are a timely reminder of how to have a happy time and not be caught out.”The twelve tips of Christmas are:•12 Junk Emails Spamming

- look out for ‘phishing’ emails that request infor-mation and never go to a website from a link in an

email to enter personal details.

•11 Viruses Infecting – when shopping online, make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date so you are protected.

•10 Labels Leaping - make sure that branded designer clothes and gifts are genuine and from a legitimate supplier by checking them out on www.brand-i.org.

•9 Credit Cards Protecting - using a credit card on items over £100 will give you extra protection against your credit card provider if things go wrong.

•8 Mittens Fraying – you have a right to a refund when goods are faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose, but shops do not have a legal obligation to accept the return of unwanted goods that are not faulty. A gift receipt could save your blushes!

•7 Savers Saving – set up a savings account with a recognised bank or credit union. Christmas can be very expensive, so don’t be tempted to pay for Christmas by short term loans. Do not fall victim to loan sharks, report them to 0300 555 2222.

•6 Children Playing - only buy toys from a reputable seller. Toys purchased from abroad or online may not meet the same standards that are required by law in the EU.

•5 (Winning) Gold Rings - don’t get conned by ‘prize

draws’ or ‘lotteries’, they are not what they seem and claiming your prize could be incredibly costly. Report scams to www.actionfraud.police.uk.

•4 Calling Cowboys - don’t be tempted to have ‘cheap’ repairs carried out as it could end up costing you more in the long run. Visit www.durham.gov.uk/registeredtraders for a list of reputable traders in County Durham.

•3 French Perfume Rip-offs - they have exactly the same designer name, almost the identical bottle, label and box as well as a similar fragrance. Make sure you check the overall packaging quality and use of logos though.

•2 Pirate DVDs - pirate DVDs are often poor quality, which will result in unhappy viewing. Fur-thermore, your money may be funding other criminal activity so always buy the genuine article.

•And a Panto that doesn’t exist! - when buying tickets for an event, make sure you’re getting genuine tickets. Use a reputable website if buying online.

If you’ve experienced issues with any of these problems, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0845 404 0506.Further advice to consider when shopping online is also available by visiting www.durham.gov.uk/on-lineshopping.

Andy Wood, from Ferryhill Station, and Ben Jones, from Bridgend in South Wales, met online through a love of music from: ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne, and a few years ago formed an unlikely long distance duo ‘ElduO’.

Local children Jessica Haswell, Danielle Johnson, Ellie-May Jobes, Shannon Haswell and Kelsey Morris have recently helped out the band by singing a chorus on their new Christmas single ‘A Rock and Roll Christmas (like the ones we used to know)’, which

is a tribute to 1973 when Wizzard and Slade had their monster Christmas hits. The single is available on iTunes, Amazon and many more online retailers and reached 35th on Reverbna-tion’s pop charts, a global music and Social Network website.

Residents in Chilton will be aware that following the high winds on Thursday 5th December, the town's L.E.D Christmas tree was blown over. Unfortunately, the tree was severely damaged and may be beyond repair. The Council would like to thank residents who telephoned the Town Clerk to make him aware of the fallen tree, along with Mr Todd of Coleridge Road, Chilton, who assisted Councillor E. Bruce in making the fallen tree safe and ensuring it was away from the main road. However, by now residents will have noticed that the town now has a new real tree, which has been kindly donated by the Freemasons after they heard about the recent damage. The tree was officially switched-on on Monday 10th December by the Mayor Elizabeth Bruce and Michael Wilkinson, repre-senting the Freemasons.Councillor Bruce said, “On behalf of the Community of Chilton we wish to thank the Freemasons for their kind generosity in these financially difficult times.”

Poetry CornerCommunity Spirit

by William Walton, Ferryhill

As I walk around this city, As I walk around this town.

I observe all the people And how most of them frown.

I can keep on walking covering the milesI would be so happy if just one person smiles.

We all have different problems, We all build a wall

We’ve got to come together And tear down them all.We can still be individual In our own special way

It’s time to come together, There’s not much left to say.

Most of us are fighting, Fight against them allWe want to be alone

With our backs against the wall.We need to come back together

Go back to the startWhere being a Community Was always at the heart.

People all together united as one.Helping each other is the way that it is done.

It was always that way There was hardly any crime. So recreate Community Spirit As it stands the test of time.

Chilton’s L.E.D. Christmas Tree was badly damaged in the recent high winds.

The lights on the new, real Christmas Tree, which was kindly donated by The Freemasons, were turned on by Mayor Elizabeth Bruce and Michael Wilkinson.

Town’s Christmas tree may be beyond repair

On Thursday 12th and Friday 13th December, Broom Cottages and Cleves Cross Schools visited Tenlands Care Home, where they sang Christmas carols and put on a small show for the residents. Families and friends turned up to watch and also sang

along. Residents were brought to tears by the lovely voices of the school children whilst others clapped along to the music. The children were served Christmas cookies and juice thanks to Carol James and Nicola Howarth, the home’s kitchen staff.

A spokesperson commented, “On behalf of Tenlands I would like to thank both schools for entertaining us over the festive period and would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year from all the staff and residents.”

Dear Editor,

Do residents realise we have an underlying drug problem in Ferryhill, Chilton and sur-rounding villages?

Be aware of the signs;1. Extra money for school2. Mood swings and not interested in school work.3. Red, sleepy eyes and ‘the munchies’.

A drug test costs £5-£10 online on Amazon and will settle your mind.

At first, its cheaper than alcohol until your child is addicted, then family lives are ruined, while dealers become rich.

Let’s back the police and report anyone we know, and we all know someone who deals. Call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Ferryhill Town Youth Under 13s entertained unbeaten Polton All Stars at home in their most recent fixture, going down 5-2 with goals from Connor Cranswick and Kieron Richardson. “Although they were

beaten, the boys did themselves proud, as the opposition average over ten goals a game, are managed by Jamie Pollock and made up from released Academey players,” said a spokesperson.

Seconds Out Boxing Academy in Ferryhill held a sponsored Punch-athon last week, which was held to raise money for a local lady who has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. The money raised will go towards funding a new treatment which is only available privately. The challenge was to try

Boxers punch above their weight

to throw 10,000 punches in one hour. The whole club rallied together, and both juniors and seniors took it in turn to throw punches, with only three minutes break between bouts. It was a major task to keep count, as everyone who took part put their heart and soul into every punch. Once the hour was over and all the punches were

counted, it was revealed that an astounding 41,600 punches were thrown, which reflects the efforts put in by those involved. The amount raised by sponsorship was an amazing £1,200.Seconds Out coaches would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all who took part and to all those who very kindly donated towards the challenge.

Ferryhill Celtic recently played in the quarter final of the Pass and Go Durham League Cup, against Houghton Mills All Stars. On paper it looked a difficult game, but the Celtic produced a superb performance, playing some of the best football of the season. Ferryhill started the game with real intent, with Jonny Agar firing just wide after just a couple of minutes. With just five minutes on the clock, Shane Todd put the Celtic 1-0 up. A smart finish from the edge of the box ten minutes later and it was

The Celtics demolish Horden2-0 when the impressive Andrew Agar rounded the keeper and finished from a tight angle. It was all one way traffic, with the Celtic playing wonderful one-touch football that had Houghton chasing shadows. At the heart of it was man-of-the-match Ben Clary. Just before half-time it was 3-0 when a Mark Burnet inch-perfect long-ball found Jonny Agar, who’s shot was blocked and fell kindly for Andrew Agar’s second. The second half started in the same fashion with the Celtic playing football

from back to front, and on 60 minutes it was 4-0 when Andrew Agar got his hat-trick after a Liam Taylor through-ball found him on the edge of the box. He finished in style, firing into the roof of the net. Next it was Jonny Agar’s turn to get on the score sheet when a trademark run ended in a penalty, which he fired into the top corner. The Celtic rounded off a very impressive display when Kurt Seymour played in James Fox, who found the back of the net to send the Cetic into yet another semi-final.
