FOUNDER’S MESSAGE
Raw Art,
Raw Art was an idea, stimulated by a desire to make art accessible, and the strong
frustration from artists who want to get their work out in the public arena. The aim of
Raw Art is threefold: to seek out and showcase new artists and to give them the
opportunity to show their works; to create integrated lifestyle events that encourage a
broader range of people to come and experience original art; and to support Singapore’s
art community / culture by taking a different perspective in the style, content and nature
of the event.
We want to work across a broad platform of events, artists, mediums and taste. We will
be driven by the desire to create excellent stimulating events that are accessible and
enjoyable. At the forefront of everything will be a continual expansion of the concept of
art simply by getting more people involved and being open to new artists, artistic styles
and creativity. Our challenge is to grow without stagnating in mindset, concept, platform
and artistry — we can only do this by being unperturbed by boundaries.
Thanking all of you for your support.
Michelle Luehman, Founder.

Title of work:
After David’s “The Death of Marat”
Year completed: 2010
Medium:
Wood, Oil on panel and pedestal
Dimension of work in cm (length x height x breadth): Sculpture with pedestal: 61 x 112 x 61cm
Backdrop painting: 122 x 152.5 x 7.5cm
Price: $3,500
Artist’s Statement:
Being brought up as a Roman Catholic, and exposed to images of western art since young, I am drawn to the painting of Jacques-Louis David’s “The Death of Marat”. In the painting, Marat’s right arm hanging out of the bathtub is what inspired me to make my mixed media work.
In “After David’s ‘The Death of Marat’”, I sculpted in wood, an entire right arm, taking reference from my own body. This sculpture is then presented on a pedestal, placed in front of a blurry copy of the original painting.
This visual element (arm hanging), has become an iconic image where other artists like Paul-Jacques-Aimé Baudry and Edvard Munch have appropriated it into their works. Likewise, I set out to attach historical references in my work, but only to dwell deeply into the aspects of bodily suffering and death.

Artist Statement:
I took batik lessons at the Substation in the late 90s, but it was only in the last 5 years that I have
taken batik seriously. The 4 lessons from Ika Zahri, proved to be a good thing. I have come a long
way to have my work selected for the Singapore Art Show in 2007 and to win an international
award, Wildlife Artist of the Year 2009, Open Category.
Being an animal lover as well as an artist, I flaunt the beauty of the skins by interpreting them on
batik.I portray the animals, showing movement and focusing on their individual characteristics.
I would like to create awareness of the wildlife population facing a catastrophic decline, as a result
of increasing demand of animal skins for fashion accessories fueled also by dealers profiteering
from this illegal but highly lucrative trade. Batik is a good example of wearable art and I have
chosen to concentrate my batik works on wildlife. I hope more people appreciate the beauty of
animal skins, yet without the need for the killing of the animals, in the form of art.

Title of work: Molek
Year completed: 2010
Dimension of work in cm (length x height x breadth): 70 x 50cm
Medium: Watercolour
Price: $3,000
Artist’s description:
The nyonya kebaya has long been an important aspect of the Peranakan Chinese culture. Close-fitting, sheer and densely embroidered in arrays of colors, the blouse is worn over the sarong, which is a large sheet of fabric wrapped around the waist. Often worn in a form-fitting manner, the skirt has a composition of interesting motifs, intricate patterns and bright colors. This distinctive combination of garment has never failed to evoke beauty and sensuality, and has had much impact on the modern lifestyle. Alluring, as suggested by the Malay term molek, the focus is on the solid hips of a young kebaya clad nyonya. This is a self depiction of how my body looks like when I put on the garment. It was a gift from my father and I have worn it on my wedding night. I remembered vividly remarks on how appealing I looked that night. I will always treasure this piece of clothing and what better way to preserve the memories by painting it on paper!

Overview of the Old Folk Series by Heidi Koh
Artist’s Statement: I have always shown great interest and respect to the elderly because
I believe that there is a story behind each withered appearance. Emotions are felt
through their vivid expressions, and gestures are captured through their everyday life.
Very often I find my inspiration among the villagers of rural places that I came across
while traveling. It is a challenge for me to capture their daily life through painting. I have
enjoyed the process of observing the facial structures and postures of the elderly people.
Exploring their surroundings or even getting up close to these people is equally fulfilling.
I pay a lot of attention to their expression as well as features such as clothing or
accessories that reveal aspects of the person’s environment and their lifestyle. To paint
these elements on paper is my way of celebrating their life.

Title: Reach For It
Year of completion: 2010
Dimensions: 66.5cm(L) x 59cm(H)
Medium: Woodblock Print
Price: $1,250
Artist’s description:
REACH FOR IT is about our endless and mindless pursuit of things. Hands are used to represent a sense of mindless attainment. Hands do not have a mind of their own, they merely act according to what the brain or mind or the subconscious wills them to do or to react. The act of the hands reaching out aimlessly in all directions represents our endless and mindless desire to achieve things. The gripping of hands at the bottom of the artwork represents a subconscious effort to stay grounded, in the midst of the chaotic desire to reach one’s goal.

Title: Moving Forward, Holding Back Year of completion: 2010

MOVING FORWARD, HOLDING BACK is about the constant act of moving forward in life, and the tendency to get held back by ourselves. We use hands to feel, communicate, work and produce. Therefore, they are used to signify the actions and interactions that help us progress in life. The act of the hands moving forward, represents the strong human desire to succeed and move forward in life. The group of hands which moving in the opposite direction, thereby forming a wave and are seen being held back by another hand represent the forces that are holding us back.

CHUCHOTEMENTS(WHISPERS)
Year:
2010
Medium:
Oil on canvas
Dimensions:
60x60x1.5cm
SOLD
Influenced by artists such as Casper David Friedrich, Arshille Gorky, Prunella Clough, Brice Marden and
reading selected works of Barthes, Kundera, Murakami while grappling with Heidegger and Bergsonism, the
artist explores the ‘here and now’ and ‘beyond’ of the Romantic Tradition and seeks to discover our
primitive connections.
Process plays an important role in investigating the idea of how we recall moments and experiences within
the realm of time and space. Paint is applied, removed and re-applied in a continuous search for essence
and clarity. The painted abstract elements; thoughts and ideas, both seen and unseen, imagined or partly
remembered, are exposed and revealed seemingly from the depth of the canvas itself. Striations of paint
remain that recall ancient rock formations.
Working in oils, the artist seeks to create a vista into a world of new horizons and old ceremonies that
exists quietly, seeping slowly into ones’ senses.

Artist’s statement on shortlisted works: Distinct carvings and abstract designs were incorporated into a large symmetrical pot with angular wide rims. An ancient bronze texture was added for the finish. The pots were inspired by ancient artefacts excavated from China. A sepia photograph of the white lotus inspired these paintings.
The White Lotus, a symbol of purity, grows untainted on murky, muddy water. This
metaphor is depicted in the painting, the unbroken white petals emerge from a greyish
hazy backdrop. The greyish color highlights the whiteness, a metaphor for how
highlighting the bad would necessarily emphasize the good in life. As Lao Zi noted in his
classic book Dao Te Ching: If there is no bad then there is no good either.

Title: Stall, # 1 Year: 2010
Medium: Drawing on paper Dimensions: 52" x 38”
Price: $2,500
Artist’s Description: If there is a good way to approach singaporean culture, it would be by the food.
Once you are in it, you can hardly resist the charming and pleasant environment which is
part of the dining experience. In my artwork the main source of inspiration has been
people and food in Singapore eateries.
From Foodcourts to Hawker centres and from the way people eat to the way food is
displayed, there is a real aesthetic experience. The scene I represented in that drawing is
an imaginary version of those food stalls that can be found anywhere in Singapore. I tried
to open another dimension, where food has personality and they become the real thing
they used to be (animals, vegetables) and not just our dinner.
In that dimension, humour infused brings out a kind of mutual warmth (between food
and cooks, or food and diners). And even if reality is colourful, when I put it in black and
white, the scene is fixed and simple as it appeared to me.

ANDY YANG
Artist Bio:
Born in 1973 in a small town in Johor, Malaysia.
Graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art, majoring in
Illustrations in 1994.
Currently residing in Singapore, Andy is an Artist, Illustrator, and Father of two.
Working as a professional Illustrator over the last 11 years, supporting advertising and design agencies both locally and internationally, Andy has received a few prestigious advertising awards under his wings, from D&AD London to Communication Arts US.
In his art practice, Andy has also been fervently experimenting with different mediums in his work since 2000. The visual impact of his works derives from his expressive techniques of mixing mediums and clashing colours. Sometimes they also escape the formal confines of the
canvas and extend onto the frames, highlighting the capriciousness of his thought process. He is influenced by the exuberance of everyday life, music and fascination in nature and its landscapes. His artwork is a result of his need to explore his personal style and interest in unexpected juxtapositions.

End Of The Innocents
2009
Oil on Wood
154cm(H) x 123cm(W)
SOLD
This is one of the single biggest painting I have ever done apart from the murals at Euro RSCG Singapore. It was painted a year after I did the "Innocent, Invincible Minds". It was what I term as an ‘accidental sequel’. This piece took about 3 months to complete. I really love to work on a big surface area. You can really feel the paintbrush strokes, expressive creative space and it actually draws in your emotions.
This was painted a time when I observed that the older the children became the more aware and careful they get about actions and thoughts. It's this time that I realised that they are actually growing up. They are starting to become more aware of their surroundings, reacting to it and the concept of fear permeates in their actions. As adults, one realizes that these are the inevitable rites of passage and obstacles, which are conquered and sometimes forgotten until you experience a similar moment of déjà vu!

TASNEEM MOOCHHALA
Tasneem Moochhala is a self-taught artist. Despite her career in chartered accountancy and later in television production, she has been painting and actively pursuing her passion in visual arts for several years. She studied printmaking at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore, where she is also studying Chinese ink painting. She is an active docent at the Singapore Art Museum, and has also been involved in guiding at the Singapore Biennale in 2007. She has spent several years in Pakistan, the Middle East and Britain, and is currently residing with her husband and two children in Singapore. Her inspiration is drawn from her travels around the world and her quest for constantly learning new mediums. This has translated into a unique style which is a blend of eastern and western techniques and often ‘painting’ without a brush. Some of her work has been commissioned and sold in Pakistan and Singapore, and she continues to exhibit her works from time to time. ARABESQUE Mixed media
2009 92cm by 73 cm (including frame)
SOLD Artist’s Description: Being an avid painter of architectural forms, and a muslim artist, the exotic mysticism surrounding historical Islamic architecture has been the main source of inspiration for the painting. My travels to Southern Spain, North Africa, the Middle East and the subcontinent have helped to create myriad images in my mind which I’ve subsequently been trying to translate into my paintings. Watercolours and collage have been juxtaposed to create patterns and forms reminiscent of the ancient Islamic architecture. My own wood carvings have also been used with printing ink and applied on to the paper.

WAITING Linoleum relief print
2008 58 cm by 62 cm (including frame)
SOLD
Artist’s Description: The painting is based on a photograph taken in the tribal area of my home country Pakistan, an area often synonymous with fundamentalist terrorism. There are however innocent bystanders such as this old man “waiting” for peace. Using his rosary beads he bides time. Is his plight one of hopelessness or is there a glimmer of hope? The linoleum relief print has been done using the reduction method, where the linoleum block is reduced in stages to a multicolored print. A minimal amount of the linoleum is removed to designate the first color, which is then carved further, re-inked with a different color and printed over the first color. The cutting is continued until an image develops. At least 6 different colours have been used.

Title: Lift Watching
Year: 2008
Medium: Acrylic On Canvas
Size: 91cm x 61cm x 2.5cm
Price: $950
Description:
A group of stray cats is living along the corridor on the second floor of my HDB flat. Every morning
around 9:30 am when I walk down the staircase, I will see them sitting or laying around the lift.
From my observation, the cats love to watch the movement of the lift as they get excited and give a
happy meow sound when the lift passes second level. While the cats are watching the lift moving
up and down, they are also enjoying the warmth of the morning sun at the same time. Is there any
other attraction apart from the lift that interests the cats to gather at the same place and time
everyday? I would like to find out.

Title: There is no golden gate, there’s no heaven waiting for you.
Year: 2010
Dimensions: 150cm x 99cm x 4cm
Price: $2,100
Artist’s description: Our reception to photographs depicting death and the pain of others found in mass media is my primary conceptual concern. My painting is based on an actual image of a decapitated head belonging to a murder victim found on the internet. I wish to conjure discomfort within the viewers and arising from which questions that the viewer may ask of him or herself why looking at such an image affects, disturbs or remain passive to them. The fascination and allure to such images of death and disaster attracts us because there is no spectacle we so eagerly pursue, as that of some uncommon and grievous calamity. There is the pleasure of looking without flinching and the pleasure of flinching. We cannot avert our eyes from the disgusting spectacle or the morally problematic images. The detachment, morbid attraction, revulsion, fascination and even pleasure one derives from viewing such images reflect notions of morality, mortality, ethics and the subconscious.

Artist Name:
MAHESHWARI ARUN
Painting to me is magical as one can so easily communicate complex emotions using just colours.
Through my paintings, which are primarily abstract expressionist, I wish to invite the viewers to
relive a moment, an emotion and be enveloped with a déjà-vu feeling. I use bold and bright colours
in my work accompanied by different textures which are left somewhat vague for the viewer’s
interpretation. I believe this method helps me reach out to the viewers and focus‘s their attention
where intended. I love experimenting with the play of natural light and different mediums.
Invariably, orange and reds always find their way into my paintings for the positive energy they
exude.
After years of painting, starting with crayons and progressing through water colours, oils and now
acrylics, I have come to realize that paintings are translating the sentiments surrounding me and
within me into an outer reality. Though I put away my brushes briefly to pursue a career as a
lawyer, I later recognized that art has no boundaries and that I can use all the abundance of
subjects I come across in other areas of my life as an inspiration for my art.
A self taught artist, I am now honing my skills and refining my techniques through courses at the
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. I still recall the sense of accomplishment I felt when I
first showed my work to a collector and went on to sell a series of six paintings steeped in Indian
folklore. I had successfully connected with a viewer!!! Many of my works have since been acquired
by private collectors in UK, India & Singapore.

Endless Summer
2010
Acrylic on Canvas
61cm x 61 cm
SOLD
My painting titled “Endless Summer” is inspired by a routine visit to the park on a sunny
afternoon. The colours of nature change throughout the day with the sun and so do the
reflections and shadows. Human emotions are as volatile as the changing shadows and
hence, change is “endless”. The focus here is the play of sunlight and the interesting use
of colours to depict the flowers and shadows. The foliage is vague and is up for
interpretation.

Artist Name:
WANG SHU XIAN
As an artist, I want my art to be able to create a certain level of impact to my audience,
either on an emotional level or for reflection purpose. I want my creations to ‘move’ and
‘touch people, hence changing their state of mind - for a better one.
Painting has always been a platform for me to channel my sentiments, and to express my
thoughts into a visual representation which I am able to share with others or to deliver a
message.
It allows me to ‘framed’ moments of emotions which often serve as a conversational and
communication piece for others to relate, interact, reflect and respond to each other.
Thru’ painting, I constantly felt the immediate sense of therapeutic relief as it conveys my
inner feelings about situations, trivial or significant, which we often do not express
verbally or openly.
I hope my future art piece will bring the same impact, peace & joy to the rest as well.

Title: “I am actually very nice.”
Date: 16th July 2010
Medium: Spray paint
Price: $800
Artist’s Description:
I’ve always had a liking for the elephants. As the largest living land animal, this thick, grey-
skinned animal with its large flapping ears is seen as ‘dangerous’ more often than not.
Despite its popularity in zoos, and the common portrayal of the species as gentle giants in
fiction, elephants are among the world's most dangerous animals. But like us humans, we
often get misinterpreted with first impressions as we meet people, so I chose to work on
the idea playing around the fact that ‘there are, still the nice ones out there’. Hence the
title, “I am actually very nice.”
