Unit 1Media and Technology in Life and Learning

1. How and why is technology being used in the classroom and with what impact?



2. How does this technology connect to specific curricula? With what lens should we assess this integration?



3. How does this technology connect to kids’ experiences outside of school



4. How does this technology prepare students for life in a democratic society and jobs in the future workplace? How does technology relate to issues of social justice and societal change?



What is the relationship between technology and the new understandings of the neurobiology of learning and attention?



Each week, there is a reading or viewing, and students respond in an on-line forum using a 4-2-2 approach.

Unit 2/Project Media Analysis and Evaluation

Students develop and present a lesson plan in which they analyze and evaluate a piece of mass media, connecting it to a core curricular area and the Information Skills Curriculum.

The focus is on developing questions that require higher order thinking.



The lesson includes a media production component that is related to the analysis.



A rationale for the inclusion of this type of lesson in the curriculum is required, including • reference to curricular standards• The NC Professional Teacher Standards and• characteristics and needs of learners



Students lead an analysis of the media they chose, record this, and reflect on their teaching.

Media for Instruction

Students develop a lesson that utilizes self-made media to connect two or more curricular areas.

The focus is on appropriate use of media in the context of engaging, interactive experiences.




A wide variety of media may be employed:• Web pages• Video• Audio• Graphics

Attention throughout is on effective design as well as production sills.
