An extensive remodel for a couple whose childrenhad left home, this project incorporated thereduction of building area and a drastic updateof the design to meet the clients’ desire for amodern building. The existing 4000-square-footbuilding appeared massive from the street, andwas often mistaken for an apartment building. The existing building was remodelled to providea strong relationship between the building and its site, views andorientation, where formerly there was none, while meeting the strictdevelopment standards of the governing agencies.

Utilising as much of the existing conditions as possible, the reorganisationof the building is centred on a flowing series of spaces flooded withnatural light. To meet the governing conditions, the south wall of the groundfloor was maintained and the second-floor volume was shifted to the northto create a continuous 60-foot-long skylight that floods the once-dark livingspaces with natural light. The second-floor volume continues this idea bystepping again to create a clerestory window line that directs natural light

into the bedroom suites. The building’s massingat street level was reduced and new materialswere employed to create choreographed viewsof the city and ocean in the distance.

A planar-type massing was created to define howand where the exterior views are found. Editingout less-desirable views, the building createssightlines that open from one point and are closedfrom another to maximise the possible views andinteraction of the building with the site. The wall, ceiling and roof planes extend out to delineateviews and create a play of solid and void.

The material palette of the building is derivedfrom the nature of the surrounding community.Bound by an oil refinery to the south and LosAngeles International Airport to the north, theCity of El Segundo holds its industrial roots closeto its heart. Rusted steel and dark grey stuccocreate solid planes, while light escapes from thevoids created by the clean and simple aluminiumwindow system.
