Upcoming releases for 2013

Farr: Ukare Funk (Percussion Quartet), Dur. 6:30Ukare Funk (2008) is an innovative multi-percussion work inspired by Japanese taiko drumming. “Ukare” is a Japanese musical term for a swung or compound beat, and also means “letting go” or “throwing caution to the wind.” This perfectly captures the essence of the work as it explores different ways of finding syncopation within a compound beat and incorporates exciting cross-rhythms.

Farr: Tubes (Percussion Quartet), Dur. 7:00Tubes (2008) for four pieces of aluminium pipe is inspired by Balinese interlocking techniques. It is innovative by exploring a wide variety of sounds made with minimal materials. The work is challenging and enables performers to demonstrate skills in ensemble unity.

Hatzis: Modulations (Percussion Quartet), Dur. 21:00Modulations (2011) for two vibraphones and two five-octave marimbas is an exciting work that combines metric modulation with minimalism. It contains intriguing “DJ-like” shifts of harmony and beats, which is challenging and shows off the ensemble skills of the performers. It was written for and first performed by TorQ Percussion Quartet (Toronto, Canada) and has since been performed by the Eastman School of Music Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Michael Burritt.

Composer Profiles

GARETH FARR is one of New Zealand’s leading composers. His music is particularly influenced by his extensive study of percussion music throughout the Pacific Rim, including Rarotangan log drum ensembles and Indonesian gamelan. Farr has written extensively for percussion. His work Kembang Suling (1995) for flute and marimba is now a standard in percussion repertoire. Among his career highlights was writing his percussion concerto Hikoi (2000) for Dame Evelyn Glennie, who premiered the work at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

CHRISTOS HATZIS is well known in Canada and internationally for his works. His music is inspired by proto-Christian spirituality, his own Byzantine music heritage, world cultures and various non-classical music genres such as jazz, pop and world music. Among his works for percussion is the highly regarded Fertility Rites (1997) for marimba and digital audio, which was inspired and incorporates the music of the Inuit, Canada’s arctic inhabitants. He has been commissioned by percussionists Dame Evelyn Glennie and Beverley Johnston to write his large-scale concerto for percussion and orchestra Tongues of Fire (2007).

VINCENT HO lives in Winnipeg, Canada where he is composer-in-residence with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. His music is rich and energetic—a unique integration of influences ranging from the visual arts, electroacoustic and natural soundscapes, traditional classical music forms, and the physical properties of the

instruments and ensembles for which he writes. He has written two percussion concerti for Dame Evelyn Glennie, including The Shaman (2011) and From Darkness to Light: A Spiritual Journey (2012). Glennie will present the US-Premiere of The Shaman with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York in May 2014.

JOHN PSATHAS is one of New Zealand’s most frequently performed composers. Early success came in 1991 with Matre’s Dance (1991), a maximum-energy duet for percussion and piano that has since made Psathas’ name internationally known through having been taken up and championed by Dame Evelyn Glennie. This work and Drum Dances (1993) are now standard repertoire for percussionists. One of his seminal works is View From Olympus (2001), a double concerto for percussion, piano and orchestra, which continues to thrill audiences worldwide.

GARY WAIN is the Principal Percussionist in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 1987. Since 1988 he has taught percussion and composition at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. He has written extensively for percussion. While technically challenging, his music has invariably proved interesting and rewarding to both players and audiences. His work Paganini Variations (1995) has entered the mainstream of performance exam repertoire and regularly appears in the recitals of advanced students at music conservatories throughout Australia.
