PREFACE

In a short period of over ten years, AIT has indeed come a long way. It has been successful only because of the quality of its innovative programmes. The institute follows innovative approach in delivery of education towards achieving excellence by giving practical exposure. The synergy between education and practical training has enabled the students to have an edge over others in securing much sought after professional positions in MNCs and many AIT pass outs have displayed entrepreneurial acumen.

The broad based curriculum developed on the US pattern and curriculum similar to that followed in the IITs is important not only for personality development, but also for attaining professional expertise. The holistic approach adopted by AIT over the years by embedding value added courses for skills/competencies development has yielded extraordinary dividends in that its students & graduating product have found very good placement in companies like Wipro, Hughes Systems, ICICI, Sapient, Mahindra British Telecom, Citi Bank, IDBI, Sahara India, KPMG, John Deere, IBM, Cisco etc.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT PLAN

The project plan titled “ FUTSAL “ deals mainly with how effectively can an inter college sports event be organized within the campus. In this project plan I have done extensive research to determine its feasibility and to what extent can the entire project be cost effective.

The scope of the project was to collect data from the internet and from other educational institutions who had conducted similar events in the recent past. In order to accomplish this purpose I had gone to different universities and schools across Delhi and N.C.R. and interviewed personally different students and faculty members about their experience in conducting similar events.

Finally with the data I had collected I made this project plan that analyses the various alternatives and at the same time gives suggestions to choose the best alternative.

INTRODUCTIONFutsal is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (colloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as "hall football" or "indoor football".

Futsal is played between two teams each with five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutes per team are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regular football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

10

Page 11: Project Futsal

HISTORYFutsal started in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930, when Juan Carlos Ceriani created a version

of football for competition in YMCAs. In Brazil, this version developed on the streets of São

Paulo, and, eventually, a rule book was published.

The sport began to spread across South America, and its popularity ensured that a

governing body was formed under the name of FIFUSA (Federación Internacional de Fútbol

de Salón) in 1971, along with the World Championships. The first World Championships

were held in Río de Janeiro, with hosts Brazil crowned champions ahead of Paraguay. Even

more countries participated in the second World Championships held in Las Vegas in early

2000's. Due to a dispute between FIFA and FIFUSA over the administration of fútbol,

FIFUSA coined the word fut-sal in 1985.

FIFA took control of the World Championships in 1989. Under new rules made by FIFA, the

technical aspects of the game for players and spectators were improved. The linesmen

were replaced with a second referee, and there were unlimited substitutions.

11

Page 12: Project Futsal

It also introduced a size 4 football, which was weighted to reduce bounce by 30% compared

to a conventional ball, which enabled faster play and, for the first time, scoring goals with

the head.

FIFA's relationships with its member associations allowed more countries to gain knowledge

and resources about futsal.FIFA soon began to administer its own indoor football games,

hosting its first FIFA Indoor Soccer World Championship in 1989 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

12

Page 13: Project Futsal

RULESThere are seventeen laws in the Futsal Laws of the Game.

13

Page 14: Project Futsal

Players, equipment and officialsThere are five players on each team, one of whom is the goalkeeper. The maximum number of

substitutes allowed is seven, with unlimited substitutions during the match. Substitutes can

come on even when the ball is in play. If a team has fewer than three players in the team, the

match is abandoned.

The kit is made up of a jersey or shirt with sleeves, shorts, socks, shin guards made out of

rubber or plastic, and shoes with rubber soles. The goalkeeper is allowed to wear long trousers

and a different coloured kit, to distinguish himself from the other players in the team and the

referee. Jewellery is not allowed, as are other items that could be dangerous to the player

wearing the effects or to other active participants.

The match is controlled by a referee, who enforces the Laws of the Game, and the first referee

is the only one who can abandon the match because of interference from outside the pitch. This

referee is also assisted by a second referee. The decisions made by the referees are final and

can only be changed if the referees think it is necessary and play has not restarted. There is also

a third referee and a timekeeper, who are provided with equipment to keep a record of fouls in

the match. In the event of injury to the referee or second referee, the third referee will replace

the second referee.

14

Page 15: Project Futsal

THE PITCHThe pitch is made up of wood or artificial material, Yinghui Court, or similar surface, although

any flat, smooth and non-abrasive material may be used. The length of the pitch is in the range

of 38–42 m (42–46 yd), and the width is in the range of 18–25 m in international matches. For

other matches, it can be 25–42 m (27–46 yd)in length, while the width can be 15–25 m (16–

27 yd), as long as the length of the longer boundary lines (touchlines) are greater than the

shorter boundaries where the goals are placed (goal lines).]The ceiling must be at least 4 m

(4 yd) high] A rectangular goal is positioned at the middle of each goal line.

The inner edges of the vertical goal posts must be 3 m (3 yd) apart, and the lower edge of the

horizontal crossbar supported by the goal posts must be 2 m (2.2 yd) above the ground.Nets

made of hemp, jute or nylon are attached to the back of the goalposts and crossbar. The lower

part of the nets is attached to curved tubing or another suitable means of support. The depth of

the goal is 80 cm at the top and 1 m at the bottom. In front of each goal is an area known as the

penalty area. This area is created by drawing quarter-circles with a 6 m (7 yd) radius from the

goal line, centered on the goalposts. The upper part of each quarter-circle is then joined by a

3.16 m (3.46 yd) line running parallel to the goal line between the goalposts. The line marking

the edge of the penalty area is known as the penalty area line.]

15

Page 16: Project Futsal

The penalty area marks where the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with his hands. The

penalty mark is six meters from the goal line when it reaches the middle of the goalposts. The

second penalty mark is 10 meters (11 yd) from the goal line when it reaches the middle of the

goalposts. A penalty kick from the penalty spot is awarded if a player commits a foul inside the

penalty area. The second penalty spot is used if a player commits his team's sixth foul in the

opposing team's half or in his own half in the area bordered by the halfway line and an

imaginary line parallel to the halfway line passing through the second penalty mark; the free

kick is taken from the second penalty mark.

16

17

Page 18: Project Futsal

Duration and tie-breaking methods

A standard match consists of two equal periods of 20 minutes. The length of either half is

extended to allow penalty kicks to be taken or a direct free kick to be taken against a team that

has committed more than five fouls. The halftime interval between the two halves cannot

exceed 15 minutes.

In some competitions, the game cannot end in a draw, so away goals; extra time and penalties

are the three methods for determining the winner after a match has been drawn. Away goals

mean that if the team's score is level after playing one home and one away game, the goals

scored in the away match count as double. Extra time consists of two periods of five minutes. If

no winner is produced after these methods, five penalties are taken, and the team that has

scored the most wins. If it is not decided after five penalties, it continues to go on with one extra

penalty to each team at a time until one of them has scored more goals than the other. Unlike

extra time, the goals scored in a penalty shoot-out do not count towards the goals scored

throughout the match.

18

Page 19: Project Futsal

The start and restart of play

At the beginning of the match, a coin toss is used to decide who will start the match. A kick-off is

used to signal the start of play and is also used at the start of the second half and any periods of

extra time. It is also used after a goal has been scored, with the other team starting the

play. After a temporary stoppage for any reason not mentioned in the Laws of the Game, the

referee will drop the ball where the play was stopped, provided that, prior to the stoppage, the

ball was in play and had not crossed either the touch lines or goal lines.

If the ball goes over the goal line or touchline, hits the ceiling or the play is stopped by the

referee, the ball is out of play. If it hits the ceiling of an indoor arena, play is restarted with a

kick-in to the opponents of the team that last touched the ball, under the place where it hit the

ceiling.

19

Page 20: Project Futsal

MisconductA direct free kick can be awarded to the opposing team if a player succeeds or attempts to kick

or trip an opponent, jumps, charges or pushes an opponent, or strikes or attempts to strike an

opponent. Holding, touching or spitting at an opponent are offenses that are worthy of a direct

free kick, as are sliding in to play the ball while an opponent is playing it or carrying, striking or

throwing the ball (except the goalkeeper). These are all accumulated fouls. The direct free kick

is taken where the infringement occurred, unless it is awarded to the defending team in their

penalty area, in which case the free kick may be taken from anywhere inside the penalty area.

A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits one of the fouls that are worthy of a direct free

kick inside his own penalty area. The position of the ball does not matter as long as it is in play.

An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper clears the ball but then

touches it with his hands before anyone else, if he controls the ball with his hands when it has

been kicked to him by a teammate, or if he touches or controls the ball with his hands or feet in

his own half for more than four second. An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing

team if a player plays in a dangerous manner, deliberately obstructs an opponent, prevents the

goalkeeper from throwing the ball with his hands or anything else for which play is stopped to

caution or dismiss a player. The indirect free kick is taken from the place where the infringement

occurred.

20

Page 21: Project Futsal

Players are cautioned with a

yellow card and sent off

with a red card.

Yellow and red cards are both used in futsal. The yellow card is to caution players over their actions, and, if they get two, they are given a red card, which means they are sent off the field.

A yellow card is shown if a player shows unsporting behavior, dissent, persistent infringement of the Laws of the Game, delaying the restart of play, failing to respect the distance of the player

from the ball when play is being restarted, infringement of substitution procedure or entering, re-entering and leaving the pitch without the referee's permission. A player is shown the red card and sent off if they engage in serious foul play, violent conduct, spitting at another person, or

denying the opposing team a goal by handling the ball (except the goalkeeper inside his penalty area). Also punishable with a red card is denying an opponent moving towards the player's goal, a goal scoring opportunity by committing an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick and using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures.A player who has been sent off

must leave the vicinity of the pitch. A substitute player is permitted to come on two minutes after a teammate has been sent off, unless a goal is scored before the end of the two minutes. If a team of five players scores against a team of fewer than five players, another player can be

added to the team with fewer than five players. If the teams are equal when the goal is scored or if the team with fewer players scores, both teams remain with the same number of players.

STRENGTHS

Huge sports field: One of the biggest strength of the project is that adequate playing area is available. The college campus has a huge sports field measuring 1acre in size, resulting which 2 futsal structures can easily be created with adequate sitting arrangements for both the audience and the participants.

Good management: The college comprises of very learned and experienced faculty members who in the past have assisted students in conducting various

events like the annual fest and other management related events, in addition to this the college boosts of highly capable students who have successfully organized several programmes at both the intra and inter level.

Good soccer team: The college has a very good soccer team that has proven its worth in various inter college events and has won many accolades, the most recent being the ‘GGSIPU CUP’. This is of great advantage to the college as it will have a very good chance of performing well in the event and add yet another feather in its

Availability of funds: The event being inter college would require substantial money to organize it, this money can be easily available from various participating colleges in the form of registration fees, moreover the college can also chip in some funds.

Page 64: Project Futsal

WEAKNESSES

No past experience: Even though the college has organized several big inter college events in the past, it has unfortunately never organized a sports event, this without a doubt is a big hindrance as the college authorities will have very little experience in this regard.

Lack of motivation: As mentioned above since the college has never organized a sports event it will definitely lack the zest and enthusiasm required to motivate itself for organizing such a huge event.

Unpopular sport: Unlike cricket soccer especially futsal is relatively less popular amongst the masses, resulting which there will be huge problem of getting students to participate in this event.

64

Page 65: Project Futsal

OPPURTUNITIES

Promotion: The College can use this event as a perfect platform to promote itself throughout Delhi & N.C.R. as the event comprises not only of various colleges but also schools.

Admission: The month of June is also apparently the time when students from schools look forward to joining various educational institutes for pursuing graduation. Thus this is a very good opportunity for the college to lure participants into joining their college by spreading knowledge about various courses it offers and the facility it provides.

Social responsibility: The College can also fulfill its social responsibility by organizing this event and simultaneously encouraging students to participate in a physical sport and presenting a platform to showcase their talent.

65

Page 66: Project Futsal

THREATS

College/school break: In the month of June most colleges and schools have their summer break resulting which it will be very difficult to seek their participation in this event.

Transportation: Arranging for transportation for all the participating colleges and schools is very difficult as it will cost a lot of money and time to ferry so many buses to and fro from various locations in and around Delhi.

Other events: Various sports camp are organized by different schools and colleges as well ass outside organizations during this month, thus it will be challenging to get participant to participate in this event during this month.

68

Page 69: Project Futsal

WHY SHOULD REEBOK SPONSOR THIS EVENT ?

WELL VERY OBVIOUSLY REEBOK WOULD WANT TO KNOW WHAT BENEFIT IT WILL DERIVE FROM THIS EVENT , THROUGH THE FOLLOWING REASONS WE HOPE TO JUSTIFY YOUR CONTRIBUTION :

1. Let us say that a shoe available at reebok on an average costs between 3000-4000 Rs , if reebok can provide us with 50 % discount coupons to be distributed amongst the winners and lucky audience members then reebok can make at least a staggering 2,00,000 Rs in less than a month as sponsors of our event .

2. Reebok spends millions of dollars every year globally with the motive of promoting its brand , since our event comprises of players and audiences between the age group of 18-21 years , reebok only stands to gain from this event as it has the opportunity to spread awareness about its products amongst more than 1000 students .

3. By extensive interaction with the audience members on a personal level , exclusive reebok banners , discount coupons , brochures , posters reebok can be promoted on a large scale.

4. In addition to the above mentioned points we will also ensure that our event coordinators and match referee will wear exclusive reebok outfit which reebok can lend us for a duration of 3 days. More over our entire organizing committee being huge fans of reebok shall wear reebok outfits which we have bought over the years and will also encourage the audience members to do so by offering gifts and merchandise.

69

Page 70: Project Futsal

WHO IS THE AUDIENCE ?

The most important thing that reebok as sponsors would like to know is about the audience , through this slide we aim to discuss about the target audience and their demographics.

1. The target audience like we have mentioned in the previous slide lies between the age group of 18-21 years.

2. We have 400 participants participating in 4 events and an expected audience of 100-150 for every single match which amounts to a whopping presence of 600 people on every single day of the event.

3. For every 3 boys participating in an event we have 1 girl , however we expect a 1:1 ratio in the audience.

4. 90% of the audience is pursuing a bachelors degree and so reebok can connect to the audience without any glitches and can easily capture their imagination.

70

Page 71: Project Futsal

WHY WILL THE AUDIENCE COME FOR THE EVENT ?

1. Discount coupons : we plan to offer discount coupons to lucky audience members.

2. Cheering : since students from different courses will compete against each other , fellow students will definitely turn up to support their respective teams.

3. Participants : irrespective of the audience 150 participants shall always be present in the audience for every single match as per fixtures , basically waiting for their match to commence.

4. Passion : with cricket world cup currently being held in India and the growing popularity of football and basketball , students will be more than eager to not just participate in the event but also support it by their presence.

5. Brand value : Finally besides the above mentioned points reebok as a sponsor , in itself will generate tremendous hype and catapult students to the field because of its sheer brand value.

71

Page 72: Project Futsal

WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF THE ORGANIZERS ?

1. In the past we have organized similar events for our school.

2. We have been part of our college sponsorship team for the past 3 years.

3. Recently we helped our college organize our annual fest ‘ATHARVA’ , details of which can be accessed on our college site (aitgurgoan.org)

4. Finally, I would like to say that the sole reason for organizing this event stems from the fact that we are extremely ardent about sports and want other students with similar passion to have a platform to showcase their talent.

SUGGESTIONS

It is highly suggested to go forward with this project as it is economically viable to organize an event of this magnitude. Furthermore no college or school has ever organized such an event and so it presents our college with the classic opportunity to be the first ones to do so and carry on the legacy henceforth.

Even though there may be certain glitches as indicated in the swot analysis, however they can easily be overcome through proper management.

As far as funds are concerned then a major part of the funds can be generated through the registration money that each participating team needs to pay combined with sponsorship money. Also as already mentioned this event will help the college in promoting itself on a large scale.
