Project 3: Creating a Google Apps Classroom

Project 3: Google Mail (Gmail) and Google Chat

Task 2: Setting up Google Chat 1. Go to mail.google.com or access your Google account and click on the Gmail tab.

2. At the bottom of the left sidebar, click on the Hangouts Contacts (person) icon. If you do not currently have any contacts, click the Find Someone link, add a Gmail user's email address and hit enter. That person is now a part of your contacts list. An invite to chat with them should appear in the lower right-hand corner. Click Send Invite to initiate the chat.

3. To add additional contacts, click the Spyglass icon next to your name in the contacts list. 4. To chat with someone already in your contacts list, click once on that person's name and a

chat box will open on the bottom right of your screen. Note: If you want to video chat, hover your mouse over the three vertical dots to the right of the contact’s name and then click on the video camera icon. Using the video chat feature is not a requirement for this task. To video chat, both you and the other Gmail user would need a microphone and a webcam.

5. Take a screenshot of the Google chat box to show that you have added a person to your chat list. • For Mac users: Press Command-Shift-4. Drag the cursor around the area you want to

capture. A .png will be saved on your desktop. Open and copy the image. Open a word processing document or Google Doc, and click paste. Save or export the file as a PDF.

• For PC users: Press the Print Screen key at the top of your keyboard, open a word processing document or Google Doc, and click paste. Save or export the file as a PDF.

• For Windows 7 users: Click the Start button and select or search for Snipping Tool. Open Snipping Tool and click New. Drag the cursor around the area you want to capture. Click Save as and save the file to your desktop. Open and copy the image. Open a word processing document or Google Doc, and click paste. Save or export the file as a PDF.

6. Upload your screenshot to Project 3, Task 2.
