How to calculate the final paper grams
To calculate the final paper grams, we add up the taut sheets grams (the two covers plus the taut sheet) to the density of the waving papers, more the wave coefficient, and sum it to the glue weight (22g/ m² for double wave). There is a contractual tolerance of ± 5% on the paper and cardboard grams.

Fir, birch plywood, elliottis pine, chipboard and O.S.B. packaging products
Wood packaging is still the best solution to ship goods around the world, by sea, air or land. The World Trade Organization WTO (World Trade Organization), has taken ISPM-15 Standards as a rule when it comes to using wood as a packaging material.
Phytosanitary mark
The ISPM-15 regulations have established an universal mark to be placed on treated wood packaging products. It is composed by 3 symbols:• the IPPC/FAO mark (sheaf of wheat)• the FITOK mark (Consorzio Servizi Legno-Sughero6)• a numbered series preceded by the IT initials (Italy)
which identifies the authorized company to use the mark.
The company Sab Imballaggi produces wood packaging according to the ISPM-15 regulations and marks them with the FITOK reference code IT-03-071.

ISPM 15 regulation
Packaging materials in raw conifer and broadleaf wood represent a pathway for the spreading of quarantine pests. Therefore it is necessary to lower the risk of possible infestations by introducing phytosanitary regulations that avoid possible economic and environmental impacts on the world wildlife heritage.
Wood packaging products composed by thin wood (max. thickness 6 mm), plywood, chipboard, OSB boards produced by using glue, heat or pressure, or by a combination of these processes, are free from phytosanitary regulations since it presents a sufficiently low risk.
ISPM-15 (International Standards of Phytosanitary Measures), signed by FAO, is an international regulation which provides phytosanitary measures to be applied to wood packaging in the international trade.
This regulation concerns a Heat Treatment (HT): wood packaging material must be heated in accordance with a specific time–temperature schedule that achieves a minimum temperature of 56 °C for a minimum duration of 30 continuous minutes .
This treatment can be realized before or after the product is assembled.
After undergoing this procedure, all packaging products must be signed with an IPPC/FAO mark that declares compliance with ISPM-15 regulations.
FITOK
The Technical Committee FITOK is an entity that, under the supervision of the National Phytosanitary Service, organizes and controls the wood packaging production chain in order to guarantee an adequate phytosanitary treatment provided for by international ISPM 15 standard required by FAO.
Pallets are marked on the blocks or on the stringers.
Since 19th March 2010, as stated by the “Direzione Generale del Dipartimento per la Sanità Pubblica Veterinaria per la nutrizione e la sicurezza degli alimenti 5” the use of phytosanitary products containing methyl bromide is no longer permitted.

MYCELIUM
SPORES
FRUITINGBODY
Fungus anatomy
Wood fungi The structure of a fungus is very simple, it is formed by a vegetative part, made up of cells all alike among each other, and by a reproductive part, the fruiting body.
In the fruiting body spores grow: when they meet with a suitable substratum they originate the mycelium.
The persisting of favorable temperature conditions to the mycelium development (15-30° C) and high humidity in the wood, even focused or limited just at the surface (between 20 and 45%) allow the development of these organisms (which alter just the aesthetic characteristics). Light is not an essential element for the growing of this fungus, except for the development of the fruiting body.
Our wood is high-quality and always sawed when wet, therefore it can be affected by climate changes (cold-warmth-wind-rain) which inevitably alter
its colour (it can darken). Unfortunately we can’t forecast or modify these are situations.
The materials need to be stored in a covered and well-ventilated space to avoid mould, colour changes and they don’t have to be stacked on each other.
For the cleaning we recommend to put them covered in a well-ventilated space for a few days, after that you can brush them.
If these fungi penetrate deep in the wood they originate the so-called blue-stained wood: blue stains usually tend to blue or grey, sometimes even to black. These stains are enduring, their effects don’t cause any risks for the human health since they are simply aesthetic, moreover they don’t alter the mechanical properties of the wood.
Several tests carried out in Europe and in North America have confirmed that fungi don’t have any effect on the mechanical strength of the wood, this is proved by the European standard EN 12246: 1999 - a quality classification of the wood used for pallets and packaging products – which allows their unrestricted use. Favourable conditions to the fungi development include humidity, heat, oxygen and lack of ventilation.

47
Exsiccation Exsiccation can be defined as a process in which the moisture content decreases; it can be natural or artificial. With natural air drying, humidity doesn’t go lower than 12-14 % and you need to keep the material outside for a long period (even for several months).
Nowadays the most common method of artificial
drying is the mainstream air heating. There are also other methods of drying, even if used less, as the vacuum drying.
Exsiccated wood prevents mould formation, but, if exposed to rain or other humidity sources, it is likely to develop once again these organisms: obviously after more time than not dried wood, as the moisture content is lower than the 20%.
User responsibilities It is necessary to point out that no wood packaging can be guaranteed as mould-free, because spores are constantly present in the air: those realized with exsiccated wood (humidity < 20%) are guaranteed as mould-free at the moment of delivery.
It needs to be clear that wood packaging originally free of mould or colour changes can quickly develop them if not correctly stored.
Once the user buys the product, he has to recognize his responsibility and he needs to put in place all the possible precautions to prevent the mould formation: the best strategy is to keep them dry.
How to store the material Our wood is high-quality and always sawed when wet, therefore it can be affected by climate changes (cold-warmth-wind-rain) which inevitably alter its colour (it can darken).

BIRCH PLYWOOD
O.S.B.
O.S.B. PANELS
O.S.B. (Oriented Strand Board) is a technical wood-based panel formed from flakes, glued with synthetic resin then pressed in different layers. The external flakes are generally oriented longitudinally with respect to the length of the panel, while the flakes of the intermediated layers are usually positioned crosswise. This leads to high mechanical resistance, strong rigidity and excellent weight / strength ratio.
ELLIOTTIS PLYWOOD PANELS
The Elliottis plywood panels are composed by overlapped layers of Elliottis pine glued alternately. In addition to the high performance characteristics of plywood, they also have a remarkable resistance to humidity. This feature makes their use suitable in environments with particular conditions, such as kitchens or bathrooms, and in manufacturing small items to store outside.

O.S.B.
Thickness 9 - 12 mm
O.S.B. (Oriented Strand Board) O.S.B. is an engineered wood-based panel consisting of strands of wood glued with a synthetic resin and pressed together in layers. In the outer layers strands are generally longitudinally orientated in line with the panel length, whereas in the middle layers they generally lie in a cross wise direction. His surface is smooth and it can be further improved by sanding. Type of woods used in the O.S.B. production include conifer (fir, pine) and any kind of broad-leaved wood. After the drying, strands are bonded with synthetic resins such as the Melamine Fortified Urea Formaldehyde (MUF) and Isocyanate (PMDI), all humidity-resistant. O.S.B. varies in colour from a light straw to a medium brown, according to the species of wood used, to the kind of resin adopted and to the pressing conditions.

It is more correct to talk about plastics than plastic, since this term refers to a big variety of polymers, each with his characteristics, properties and areas of application.By industrial production processes, plastics are manufactured to produce semi-finished products (films, blocks, panels) and/or finished products. Moreover, plastic is an unique material, since it allows a wide range of products to be recycled and transformed in new plastics.

Die-cutting The process of die cutting plastic involves creating a custom die in the required shape with a cutting superior profile, placed on a wood flat bottom. The die board has to be inserted in a machine that, by alternately opening and closing, allows to die cut the material.
Coupling and adhesivisation We use various techniques such as the coupling and the adhesivation, both by heat and cold, so that we can realize composite and self-adhesive materials. Our adhesives are technically of high quality, both acrylic and rubber- or water-base, to guarantee uncontested reliability through time.
Hot air welding Thermoplastic materials can be welded by using heat. In fact these materials, although they aren’t affected by external temperature, become malleable if heated, so that they can be worked and assembled with specific heat sealers. There are different types of machines that produce heat in different ways. Hot bar sealers, for example, use an heated metal bar. Other technologies, such as the ultrasonic welding, use high-frequency ultrasounds and vibrations to produce heat by the quickly rubbing of the plastic surfaces that need to be welded.
Water jet cutting This technology uses a high-pressure jet of water (until 7.000 bar) to cut in a highly precise way. The cut width is restrained, in this way you get the minimum waste and surfaces present only a few flaws; moreover physical-chemical characteristics of the material are not altered since it is a cold cutting.
Cutting plotter The cutting plotter is a less expensive solution than the water jet cutting; also, by using this, you avoid making a die cut. The material is cut by a blade that oscillates at a high frequency: the semi-finished is placed on a vacuum cutting table that has strategically cut small air holes all over it. In this way even materials with folds and waves such as soundproofs, foams and foam rubbers are cut precisely.

Taut cardboard Cardboard and cardstock are cellulosic materials with high paper grams, not corrugated, used to produce luxury packaging products.Usually these materials are produced by various (from 3 to 7) throws of pulp until you get a rigid structure, composed by an external surface, thus said cover, an intermediate inner and a back.As a rule it is totally grey, however it could be available also with white or black covers or totally with white pulp.
Plannings and prototypes Our company has a technical office which deals with planning and prototyping development to help you finding any solutions (may it be functional and aesthetic) for your packaging. We realize customized prototypes thanks to these technologies: computer-aided drafting (CAD), digital plotter cutter and graphical software.
Manufacturing According to the type of product realized, cardboard goes through different kinds of procedures performed by just as many machines: cutting (through die-cutting machine, plotter or cutter), half cut (to create folding as corners and edging) , creasing (to simplify folding and avoid deformation and cracking).Once the cardboard is assembled, the manufactured product is covered by paper, canvas, eco-friendly leather, velvet with the purpose of improving the aesthetic impact.Completing the process, and in case of necessity, products can be fully-fitted by: eyelets, laces, handles…
Printing Tailored paper with digital, offset or flexographic printings. Logos, brands, writings, decorations… realized by using silk-screen, pad or hot printings.

86 > Focus ecology
Recycling cellulosic, wood and plastic packaging products is an example of an actual circular economy: economic, social and environmental benefits for the community as a whole, to prove that recycle is advantageous for everybody. For this reason it is very important to avoid that these materials, once used, end up in a landfill: it’s better to pick them up and reuse them, bringing them to a new life. From wastes to resources.
TERTIARY PACKAGING
Every tertiary packaging, which allows the most simple, safe and economic goods handling and supply, has an high degree of homogeneity, big sizes, it is easy to separate and clean: all these characteristics make it particularly suitable for being released in the recovery system, in this way by recycling you enhance the materials it is made of.
FOCUS ECOLOGY
87Focus ecology <
PAPER AND CARDBOARDEcological platforms take paper and cardboard and provide to select waste paper: the technical and economic values of the material increase depending on how much defined is the selection for type and quality. Having reached the paper mill, the recycle begins: paper is ‘slushed’ into pulp and large non-fibrous contaminants are removed, until it returns to the production chain. Recycled paper can be treated and reused for producing new paper (around 95%). If the recycled paper has no longer the sufficient texture to produce other paper, it can be used as fuel to produce energy.
WOODRefuses, reduced in their volumes, are carried to the waste industries, where wood, once cleaned and lowered in little splinters, becomes new raw material for the industrial manufacturing chain ( chipboard, cellulosic pulp for paper mills, wood-cement blocks for green building). To a lesser extent it can also be transformed in compost for agriculture or used as fuel for the production of electricity and heat energy. The wood life cycle can essentially last forever, with ecological and economic benefits. Recycling wood actually means saving energy, improving the qualitative status of air and at the same time avoiding wastes.
PLASTICThe recycling process consists of a series of procedures: first plastics are cut into tiny chunks or pieces, then they are cleaned and melted. Once the plastic pieces are compressed into tiny pellets known as nurdles, we can say that the recycling process is over since the refuse has been turned into a new raw material, ready to be released in a new production process. These secondary raw materials are used for different applications according to the type of polymer recycled. Plastic packaging products which are not considered suitable for the recycling market, for their heterogeneity and poor quality, can still be recovered in energy or heat form.
