International BaccalaureatePrimary Years Program

The IBPYP takes an international approach to educat-ing the whole child. Through a rigorous and diverse education, students learn to problem solve, appreciate different cultures, and gain an understanding of their place in this world. The program fosters learner profile characteristics, which include:

The PYP focuses on inquiry-based learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and make connections from learning to their everyday lives. They explore subject areas by asking questions such as:

What is it like? How does it work?How is it connected to other things?

What are the points of view?Why is it like it is? How do we know?

What is our responsibility?How is it changing?

Language arts, math, science & technology, social studies, arts, and personal, social, and physical educa-tion are all studied in the PYP. Students explore these subjects through six transdisciplinary units of inquiry.

What does the IBPYP look like?

• Full program participation for all students in Preschool 3 through grade 5

• Second language instruction for all students. Each class will have weekly lessons in Spanish language and culture.

• Engaging, hands-on lessons, which foster the natural curiosity of children

• Teachers and staff trained in the philosophy and bestcurriculum practices of the IBPYP

• Application of student learning to real-life situations

• Close alignment of PYP units of inquiry to Carlislestandards

• Acquisition of skills necessary for student success in a di-verse and challenging world, which can be applied across subject disciplines, including:
