What is Ductile Iron? Ductile Iron is an iron/carbon/silicon alloy. When magnesium is added to the molten iron the graphite forms in spheres rather than in flakes. This transformation virtually eliminates brittleness and produces a strong, ductile material.
Strength of Ductile IronMechanical Properties Ductile iron displays excellent mechanical properties, such as high resistance to tensile stresses and impact loads, high elongation and high yield strength. These properties make the material the most universally applicable pipeline material today.
High Strength and Stiffness Ductile iron is suitable for installation in open fields or high traffic load areas and can be laid at a variety of depths. The high material strength minimises the need for imported bedding and surround, hence minimising the impact on the environment.

Blutop Range (Pipe)
The small diameter pipe without compromise Blutop is an innovative ductile iron pipe system dedicated to small diameter potable water distribution which combines the strength of ductile iron with the lightness of plastic. It is available in DN/OD 75, 90, 110, 125 and 160. Blutop is approved for potable water under regulation 31.4.a. It is also WRc approved and conforms with functional performance aspects of EN545.

Ductile Iron Special Applications Ductile Iron Special Applications
In certain soils and under specific conditions, Natural/Integral Plus and Large DN Water Pipe/Integral, may not offer sufficient protection. For these instances, Keyline Utilities can offer various alternative protection systems.
This thick organic coating system for extreme environments, already widely used across Europe as the toughest external protection system for ductile iron pipelines, is now available in the UK. This coating system provides a total barrier, completely separating the buried pipe from the surrounding soil.
The new TT Coating maintains all the installation advantages of ductile iron – easy to joint, easy to cut, under pressure tapping and self-anchoring.
Zinc + PE Sleeving How Sleeving Works
“The principal function of the polyethylene sleeving is to separate the pipe from contact with the soil environment thus preventing non-uniform contact with the soil solids. The system is therefore relatively insensitive to minor handling damage and the presence of ground water inside the sleeving. Where major damage to the sleeving is caused however, repairs must be carried out before laying.”
Application of PE Sleeving
Polyethylene sleeving may be obtained from Keyline Utilities for application on site. Polyethylene sleeving can be fitted on site and no special equipment is needed other than that necessary to lift the pipes and fittings.
Zinc + TT (PEC and PUX Coating)Keyline Utilities is also able to supply an external protective system called TT (Total Terrain). The TT external coating system comprises thick organic coatings. (Extruded polyethylene PEC DN80-700 and sprayed polyurethane PUX DN800-2000.)
How TT Works
The TT external coating system uses thick organic coatings. These coatings provide a complete barrier between the pipe and the surrounding soil. The TT coating system is suitable for use in highly aggressive soils.
Application of TT
DN80-700 pipes are supplied with a nominally 2mm thick polyethylene coating, which is applied using a heat bonding adhesive, co-extrusion technique. DN800-2000 pipes are supplied with a sprayed polyurethane coating, 900 microns thick. The TT coating system minimises risk of damage during transportation and installation.
Zinc + Tape Wrap Tape Wrapping
In highly aggressive soils a more robust type of protection may be necessary. Keyline Utilities is able to supply pipes wrapped with heavy duty self-adhesive tape throughout the diameter range. The tape consists of a combined anti-corrosion mastic and pressure sensitive adhesive, laminated to a flexible PVC backing.
How Tape Wrap Works
The tape exhibits high resistance to bacterial attack, low water vapour transmission and low water absorption as well as providing high electrical resistance.
Application of Tape Wrap
Tape is factory applied around the body of the pipe. The tape is applied around and along the pipe until it covers the pipe from the back of the socket to a point sufficiently removed from the spigot such that it will not interfere with jointing. Each wrap overlaps the preceding one by approximately 25mm or 55%, depending upon the degree of protection required. The tension in the tape results in a protective wrap which adheres strongly to the pipe body, completely isolating it from the soil.Available sizes DN75-DN2000 for both Water and Sewerage pipe.
TT Coating System
Installation and Handling
Epoxy Coated Fittings DN80-2000All ductile iron fittings in the sizes DN80-2000 are supplied with an epoxy coating conforming to BS EN 14901.
Potable water fittings are coated internally and externally with blue epoxy. The blue epoxy is approved to BS 6920.
Coated products are also approved by the Secretary of State under Regulation 31.4.a of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000. These are listed as “PAM Natural Pipeline Components” in the DWI list of approved products.
Sewerage fittings are internally and externally coated with a red epoxy.
Compatibility withPipe SystemsThe tough epoxy is able to cope with aggressive soil conditions without the need for additional protection and PAM epoxy coated fittings are therefore suitable for use in conjunction with any pipe coating systems offered by Keyline Utilities.

UK gas operating pressures have historically been limited to 7bar for PE100 pipe – this is the result of the UK rating system for charges on pipelines at higher pressure.PE80 (MDPE) water pipelines 355mm and greater in diameter should be de-rated if significant amounts of air are present – see the UK water industry’s IGN 4-32-18 March 2003.PE80(MDPE) gas pipe pressures must be further de-rated for temperatures below 0ºC.The values in the above table do not address any other safety-related issues associated with pipeline design.

MaterialsThe numbers relate to the MRS (Minimum Required Strength) values of the material.
MDPE = PE80 – This is the term used to denote the polyethylene material which has been widely used for gas, water and industrial applications for many years. The terms MDPE and HDPE were commonly used to describe this material, although MDPE PE80 has a much higher long term stress crack resistance than traditional HDPE PE80.
HPPE = PE100 – This is a term used to denote high performance polyethylene. PE100 is a higher performance material than PE80 and demonstrates exceptional resistance to rapid crack propagation as well as to long-term stress cracking. Moreover, the higher strength of PE100
permits thinner pipe walls than PE80 for the same operating pressure. PE100 uses less polymer and provides a larger bore and increased flow capacity for a given nominal pipe size. This can result in significant cost savings at certain sizes and pressure ratings.
PE80 and PE100 are not recommended for continuous pressure operation at temperatures above 60°C for liquids, including sewerage and industrial effluents, or 30°C for gaseous fluids. PE100 has advantages over PE80 at low temperatures, since it is extremely crack resistant down to -30°C. When considering applications which exceed the limits stated above, please contact us for further information.
The advantages of polyethylene pressure pipe systems have been appreciated in the gas and water regulatory bodies for many years. The estimated service life for Polethylene is 100 years or more and once it has reached the end of its life, it can be recycled. Polyethylene pipe systems are manufactured to meet exacting standards imposed by the gas and water bodies.

Remove nut from fitting and discard white split ring (except 35, 42 and 54mm fittings, where split ring is used as spacer). Push black rubber seal into fitting body and assemble components in the nut in the order shown above.
Replace nut onto fitting body without tightening. Mark pipe at ‘A’ in order that pipe end reaches flange on body of fitting ‘B’, as shown above.
Push pipe through nut adaptor and metal ring into body of fitting to ‘A’ mark on pipe as shown. Tighten firmly with Plasson wrench. For reuse replace grip ring.

Our range of traditional gunmetal pipe fittings for threaded pipe is robust and contains a wide variety of product types and sizes. The fittings’ threads are to BS EN 10226-1 (BS21) and products are available in sizes ¼" to 4".

British Standard Pipe thread (BSP) is a family of standard screw thread types that has been adopted internationally for connecting and sealing pipe ends by mating an external (male) with an internal (female) thread.
Two types of thread are distinguished:
Parallel threads, which have a constant diameter
Taper threads, with increasing / decreasing diameters along the length of the thread.
Jointing threads: These are pipe threads for joints made pressure-tight by the mating of the threads. They use a taper external (male) thread, and a parallel internal (female) thread. Best practice is to always use a jointing compound on the threads. Minimum order quantities may apply.

Made from corrosion resistant gunmetal, threaded pipe fittings will provide years of trouble free service in even the most arduous of ground conditions

Barrier Pipe
Barrier pipe is used to prevent the permeation of ground contaminents into the water supply. The use of high quality PE pipe combined with an aluminium barrier layer provides a flexible and well tested solution. With the increased use of brownfield sites the need for a cost effective yet reliable and robust system is imperative. Keyline is able to offer barrier pipe ranging from 25mm up to and including 630mm.

Gasket Standard gaskets – EPDM to BS EN 681 Part 1 Type WA for water and sewage applications, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +90°C.
Product coating Wall coupling bodies and end rings: coated in black Rilsan Nylon 11. Optional, Scotchkote 206N fusion bonded epoxy. Studs, ‘T’ bolts and nuts: either zinc plated to BS EN 12329:2000 followed by Rilsan Nylon 11 for double protection against corrosion or Sheraplex coated to WIS 3-52-03.
