THE FOURTH ROUND OF VARSITY FOOTBALL SEES MANY TEAM IMPROVEMENTSKovsies, UWC and NWU are starting to show their mettle
The fourth round has many fans cheering their teams on as NWU moves to the top of the
Varsity Football standings. The underdogs continue to improve and the tops teams are fighting
to maintain their positions. Who will take this year’s Varsity Football title?
The first game of the night saw UP-Tuks cruising to a convincing 5-1 victory over Varsity
Football newcomers Limpopo in Pretoria today. It was a clinical performance from the defending
champions as they bounced back from a disappointing 4-0 defeat to UJ last week. The match
was the third straight defeat for the Limpopo team, who showed plenty of heart but have yet to
register a win in their debut season. Botshelo Mfulwane scored the first goal in the first half, and
the UJ striker added another goal not long after. Limpopo hit back with a goal from striker Clyde
Kgatla, who headed a great cross into the net to make it 2-1 at the half-time break. Sibongile
Njokwe put UJ 3-1 up after Limpopo failed to clear a free kick .Fullback Lindsay Stowman
scored UP-Tuks' fourth goal when he followed up on a loose ball after a good run from
Mfulwane, who had drawn the Limpopo goalkeeper off his line. Limpopo pushed hard right until
the final whistle, but the home side had the final say when Jeremiah Nkwana netted his team’s
final goal in the bottom right corner.

The second game of the night between UFS-Kovsies and UJ, billed to be the match of Round
Four, lived up to the hype as they played out to a dramatic 2-2 draw. UJ will head back home
the happier of the sides, taking away a valuable point after playing most of the match with just
ten men. The home side was awarded a penalty in the 36th minute after UJ captain Grant
Bruchhausen handled the ball in the 18-yard area. Lehlohonolo Mokoena stepped up and
assured his team the lead, easily getting past Harrison in goal. Kovsies went into the break with
a 1-0 lead. The second half saw both sides in search of an early goal. The visitors drew level in
the 66th minute when a deflected shot by Sandro Claro found its way into the Kovsies net.
Manxubandile Bantshi struck a minute later, sending the match into a frenzy and handing the
lead back to the hosts. UJ’s Lwazi Nogenga's header beat Serasengoe Moodie in Kovsies' goal

and got the visitors back into the game. Both teams desperately sought the winning goal in the
closing moments of the game, but neither could find the back of the net and both sides had to
settle for one point.

The third game for the evening saw UWC earn some vital points in Port Elizabeth, where they
emerged victorious against NMMU. The 2-1 UWC win at Madibaz Stadium was a heated affair
that saw the hosts ending the match with just 10 men on the field. The Madibaz started well,
putting the visitors under pressure with some great movements and passing which saw UWC
goalkeeper Reon October having to make an early save. However, the Western Cape team
drew first blood, catching NMMU on the break in the 16th minute and forcing a penalty which
playmaker Tapelo Sixishe put past goalkeeper Lyndsay Jennings. This gave UWC a 1-0 lead at
halftime .Midfielder Lukhanyo Rasmeni put the home team back in the match half way through
the second half when he broke through the UWC defence. Reza Zain Dramat scored late to put
the final nail in the coffin for NMMU by handing them their first home defeat in the competition.

Another exciting final game saw NWU go to the top of the Varsity Football standings with a
ruthless 6-0 demolition of UCT in Mafikeng. Striker Tshenolo Machwisa scored a hat trick,
leaving the winless Ikeys at the bottom of the standings with just one log point from their four
matches this season. NWU opened the scoring in the second minute when a great run and
cross from Orebotse Mongae was finished off by Thatohatsi Santos who slammed the ball into
the net to beat UCT goalkeeper David Frankel. Frankel found himself picking the ball out of the
back of the net again shortly afterwards, as Tshenolo Machwisa scored to make it 2-0. The
masterclass from Mongae continued as another weaving run set up Machiswa who had no
trouble finishing his second goal to make it 3-0 at half-time. In the second half, a mesmerising
run from Mongae set up Matsobane Matsi for the fourth goal of the match, shortly before
Machwisa wrapped up his hat-trick to make it 5-0. NWU were not done yet though. A stunning
shot from replacement Kagiso Modimeong found the bottom left corner to cap a resounding
victory for the home side.

cheerleaders, pyrotechnics, thumping music and vocal fans. The concept is that of a
playground, where the best footballers can test themselves against their peers. Market-leading
brands sponsor the platform, with Samsung, Debonairs Pizza, FNB, Cell C and JetMart as the
lead football sponsors.

what draws the crowds to these events. These high-energy events are well organised and offer
