Skill for Success
John Franklin 2007 2
ADVICE IS VERY CONFUSING!
• Dozens of lists• 100s of Books• 1000s of tips and suggestions• Endless advice
Frequently inconsistent
No theory and very little evidence
SUCCESS INVOLVES ACHIEVING VALUED GOALS
• Moving from where we are to where we want to be
• Nothing happens until we are motivated to change and believe it is possible
WHAT PREVENTS SUCCESS?
• No goals (= no striving)
• Inappropriate goals
• Not knowing how to achieve goals
• Not believing goals are achievable
WHY NOT ACHIEVABLE?
• Too distant – Persist over time
• Too difficult – Beyond ability
PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATE THEIR ABILITY
• Success requires us to perform at a certain level
• Mistake current performance for ability
• Current performance only reflects current learning – Not ability!
INTELLIGENCEABILITY
TALLENTPERSONALITY
PERFORMANCE
Are not fixed – They can be developed!
THE GREATEST OBSTACLE TO SUCCESS IS THE BELIEF THAT WE CANNOT CHANGE
SIGNIFICANTLY
SELF LIMITING ASSUMPTION!
WE ARE LIMITED BY OUR ATTITUDES
WHICH INHIBIT OUR LEARNING
andACTIONS
OUR ABILITY ALWAYS EXCEEDS OUR PERFORMANCE
• We will never know the limits of our ability
• Our assumptions limit us
• Never confuse current performance with ultimate ability!
WE CAN ACHIEVE AMAZING THINGS BY LEARNING TO
DEVELOP THE NECESSARY SKILLS
OUR ABILITY IS LIKE A MUSCLE:THE MORE WE USE IT THE MORE IT
GROWS!
WHAT IS SUCCESS? WHAT IS SUCCESS IN TAFE?

ALL SUCCESS INVOLVES LEARNING TO DEVELOP SKILLS
• Learning is the foundation which underpins all skill development
(You can learn your way to success!)
• We can learn to do virtually anything but only if we believe we can!
• Skills form a hierarchy – Some things are more important than others!
