LAW AND PROMISE
BPsaid The boy is not governed by DONT, but led on by
DO. The Scout Law is devised as a guide to his actions, rather than as repressive of his faults.
When they make their Promise our young people make avoluntary commitment to a set of values and a way of life.
The Scout Law and Promise guides them from a childhoodacceptance that the rules presented are sacrosanct, to amature value system.

TEAM SYSTEM
What young people gain from living and working togetheraccording to a code of living , and the relationships that
develop as a result of a multitude of shared adventures, are just as important in terms of their education as theactivities in which they take part, and the myriad ofpractical skills they might learn from them.
Being part of a democratic system, taking on a role andthe responsibilities that go with it, and experiencing teamwork among a group of peers are all part of the team orpatrol system.

NATUREMore than any other element of the Scout Method, Nature
contributes to the development of the young person in all ofthe areas of development in a holistic way. Nature is powerfuland provides a real environment for young peoples
adventures, one that can be unforgiving at times. When
scouts make a camp together in nature, where there waspreviously nothing, they create a mini society where all of
them must play an active role. Nature is also a great source of
beauty, and inspiration. More than anything else it can teachus in many ways just how fragile the cycle of life can be.
Confucius said: He who is in harmony with nature hits the
mark without effort and apprehends the truth without thinking

SYMBOLIC FRAMEWORK A symbolic framework builds on young peoples
natural capacity for imagination, adventure, creativity and inventiveness in a way which
stimulates their development, helps theirunderstanding, and brings with it a sense ofexcitement and adventure.
Symbols can communicate directly as theyappeal to the imagination and can enhance theexperience and understanding - without the needfor advanced powers of reasoning or complex
language

LEARNING BY DOING Acquiring skills and knowledge through first hand
experience. Not just tangible skills like tying aknot, but learning how to relate to people, how to
take on leadership skills, how to plan andorganise.
Learning from mistakes, learning by reviewing.

PERSONAL PROGRESSION Personal progression focuses specifically on helping each
young person to be consciously and actively involved in hisor her own development.
The progressive scheme is based on a set of educationalobjectives which are specifically suited to the age section, established according to the knowledge, skills and attitudesthat a young person could reasonably be expected to havegained in the various areas of development by the end of
that age section. Presented in an attractive and stimulating way, it provides a
tool for each young person, with the help of the adult leader,to work out a set of personal objectives, plan how to
achieve them, carry out that plan, review and celebrate theirachievements.

ADULT SUPPORT This involves a voluntary partnership between
the adult leader and the young people, bothindividually and as a group. In this partnership,
the main responsibility of the adult leader is tofacilitate and guide the process of self-education.
The nature of the Scouters relationship with the
young person is different from that of any otheradult in his life, and has to be so, in order tofacilitate the process of self education.
