Introduction
• BRIEF ON COCOA RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF NIGERIA
• CRIN was established in 1964 with mandate to conduct research on five crops namely; Cocoa, Kola, Coffee, Cashew and Tea.
• The institute has six sub-stations namely:Owena(Ondo State) Uhonmora (Edo-State) Ochaja (KogiState) Ibeku (Abia State) Ajassor (Cross River State) and Kusuku-Mambilla (Taraba State)

• New cocoa hybrids: CRIN TC 1-TC8 has been developed and been distributed to farmers.

• The following activities are necessary for achieving good cocoa quality.
• Field Handling [Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)& Pesticides application]
• Harvesting [Sharp cutlass should be used]
• Pod Breaking [With club or stick not cutlass]
• Fermentation can be done with Heap, Basket, Box and Tray methods for 5-6 days
• Drying: This depends on sun intensity (5 days)+ The moisture content is 6-7.5 percent.
• Storage: Well dried cocoa beans are neatly packed in Jute bags for storage and marketing.
• Produce Inspection: State Ministries of Agriculture should ensure proper weighing, grading.
• inspection is done to eliminate slaty, moldy and defective beans.
• these lead to high quality beans for local and international market.

• OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS
• Field visit to farmers’ farm .
• Hosting farmers & educational institutions on excursion.
• Training of farmers, students and ADP Extension Agents on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).
• 500 participants were trained between 2016-2017.
• An awareness and sensitization workshop was held in Benin City, Edo State in 2017 .
• Exhibition of CRIN developed technologies in different fora such as the annual National Cocoa Day.
• Participation in annual Research Extension Farmers Input Linkage System (REFILS).
• Collaboration with Federal Government distributed 10,000kg of Jumbo cashew nuts to farmers in 22 States of Nigeria.
• CRIN distributed over 500,000 improved cocoa pods to farmers in 2016-2017.
• CRIN held radio programme in Amuludun FM (Agbe - onigioro) for 13 weeks.
• Publications: Books and training manuals were produced.
• Some villages/schools were adopted in collaboration with ARCN & WAAPP.
• Farm demonstration and technologies transfer in Some adopted villages/schools.
