Procedure
1. Reproduce10copiesoftheturkeytemplateontolightbrownconstructionpaper.
2.Useamarkertonumbertheturkeysfrom1to10.
3.Mixuptheturkeys.Thenholduptheturkeysoneatatimeandhavevolunteersidentifythenumbers.
4.Dividetheclassintogroupsofthreeorfour.Giveeachgroupacoupleofthenumberedturkeysandsomefeathers.
5.Pointoutthattheturkeysaremissingtheirfeathers.Instructstudentstolookatthenumeraloneachturkey’sbodyandgluethatnumberoffeathersontheturkey.Allowthegluetodrycompletely.
6.Havestudentshelpyouhangthe10completedturkeysinorderonabulletinboardtitled“TenLittleTurkeys!”
Independent Practice
1. PrintouttheThanksgivingCountingBookreproducibleandmakephotocopiesonconstructionpaper.Youmaywanttohaveadultvolunteerscutthepagesalongthedottedlinesandstaplethemtogethersothatthebooksarealreadyassembled.Ifnot,helpstudentsassembletheirbooks.
2.ProvidestudentswithThanksgiving-themedstickers.Encouragestudentstolookatthenumeraloneachpageandattachthecorrespondingnumberofstickers.(Variation:Insteadofstickers,havestudentsglueuncookedkernelsofcorntothepagesoftheircountingbooks!)
3.Invitestudentstotaketheircountingbookshometopracticenumberrecognitionandcountingskills!
