Praise for the Project

EU Switch Asia Programme – is a three year program funded by the European Union on a budget exceeding 600,000 Euros focused on promoting sustainable production and consumption practices in the Asian region.

People in Need,Cz –a Czech based development organization is the key coordinator of the project with experience implementing successful national biogas development programs in Cambodia and Ethiopia. In Sri Lanka, PIN has been involved in development activities for over 8 years.

Janathakshan – Winner of the Energy Globe Award 2001, Janathakshan inherits over 20 years of work experience in the renewable energy sector in Sri Lanka from predecessor Practical Action. The organization was instrumental in; establishing the Lanka Biogas Association (LBA), initiating and facilitating the development of national biogas standards of the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) and setting up a network of key institutions and individuals.

Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) – the project works under the guidance of SEA aligning its activities to the National Biogas Program of Sri Lanka.

• Awareness creation programs at National and district levels to develop a plan to promote biogas in the identified key areas of intervention.• Training of designers, constructors and after sales service providers at selected provinces covering participants from selected districts enabling the availability of a critical number of service providers in these areas.• Construction of biogas demonstration units at key locations. Diverse biogas units suiting different needs will be constructed and used as best case models for sharing knowledge on managing and promoting biogas systems at provincial level.• Knowledge sharing via International /Inter provincial exposure tours for key stakeholders (policy makers, service providers, SME’s, MFI’s to increase their awareness on biogas and witness best case practices).• Development of financial mechanisms via financing institutions to support investment in biogas technology at producer level and consumer level.• Knowledge dissemination through the development of manuals, courses, vocational training, national standards accreditation and certification schemes etc.

The project aims to create an enabling environment for large-scale dissemination of biogas as a reliable source of clean energy for SMEs and households in Sri Lanka. By mobilizing the Sri Lankan private sector, MFIs, consumer groups along with Public authorities the project will promote the uptake of renewable energy and contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

• 30-35 well equipped SME’s capable of providing biogas related services (design, construction, after sales services, appliances).• 3-5 finance institutions providing well developed loan schemes to support construction of biogas units.• 35-50 hotels install biogas units with the objective of sustainable solid waste management, cost savings through energy and resource efficiency and eco-friendly responsible tourism.• Accumulated savings of LKR 10 million per year for households and Hotels• Reduction of over 5700 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.• 500 new jobs created in the biogas related sector• Conducive policy elements to promote biogas.
