The Department of Medical Physics was
established in the year 2007 and about 16 students are
being accommodated in the M.Sc Medical Physics
programme every year. Now, this department is a
constituent of School of Physical Sciences, Bharathiar
University. The M.Phil and Ph.D research programmes in
Medical Physics are being conducted from 2009 onwards.
Students take up one year internship after completion of
the course, as per Atomic Energy Regulatory Board
(AERB) guidelines since 2013.
Also, our students have the opportunity to get rich
hands-on-experience and training from the facilities
available in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology,
Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy at GKNM Hospital.
They are also exposed to field training in various cancer
hospitals all over India. Almost all our students who
completed their M.Sc Medical Physics Programme are
employed as Medical Physicists and Radiation Safety
Officers in cancer hospitals throughout the country. Also,
some of our outstanding students are working in World
Health Organization (WHO) and few of them are pursuing
research programme in USA.
About G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital
(GKNMH)
In May 1952, G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial
Hospital had come into existence as a fifty – bedded
Hospital. In 1958, Valavadi Narayanaswamy Cancer
Centre (VNCC) the specialized Oncology wing of
G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital was born. Over
the years, the transition from this humble beginning has
been phenomenal and it is today regarded as a leading
center offering cancer treatment at an affordable cost
VNCC has been recognized by the UICC as a
Specialized Cancer Research and Treatment Centre.
With over 4000 new cases being registered annually. It
remains a leading tertiary referral centre in this part of the
country. Valavadi Narayanaswamy Cancer Centre has
been at the forefront of radiation based cancer treatment in
South India for more than four decades now.
About the Department of Radiation Oncology, Valavadi
Narayanaswamy Cancer Centre, GKNMH
In 1970, the first telecobalt unit was installed.
Currently, two external beam therapy machines – a Varian
Trilogy linear accelerator with RapidArc and CBCT features
and an Elekta Precise high energy accelerator are used for
treatment services. In addition, the centre has a Siemens
16-slice Somatom Scope CT Simulator, an Elekta
microSelectron HDR treatment unit, Varian Eclipse
planning systems and a spectrum of radiation equipments
and accessories. With the overwhelming support of the
management with highly qualified Radiation Oncologists
and Medical Physicists, oncology and radiation physics
services are elegantly carried out to the benefit of the
society. The centre is successfully running the DNB
(Diplomate National Board) in Radiation Oncology Post
Graduates Course since 1992. As a feather in its cap, a
highly successful M.Sc (Medical Physics) programme is
conducted in collaboration with Bharathiar Univerisity
since 2002. All our students are well placed and some
placed abroad.
Many Radiation Oncology Clinical Research trials
are being conducted in collaboration with IAEA / IARC /
WHO / ICMR along with Medical Oncology and Surgical
Oncology trials which has resulted in tremendous
improvement in Quality of Care. Apart from radiation
oncology, the centre is well-supported by Medical
Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Gynae Oncology, Haemato
Oncology etc. to deliver the multimodal treatment
requirements of Cancer disease. Thus, GKNM Hospital, its
crowning glory VNCC jointly provide dedicated, relentless
and professional health care services at affordable prices
to the people of Coimbatore and India as a whole.
Workshop Theme
The workshop is aimed to all medical physicists
seeking a refresher course. Topics to be covered in
lectures by faculties from the Department of Medical
Physics - Bharathiar University, Department of Radiation
Oncology - GKNM Hospital apart from eminent speakers
from reputed organizations like AERB/BARC etc.
About Bharathiar University
The Bharathiar University was established at
Coimbatore at the foothills of Maruthamalai in the Western

Arts & Science Universities by the National Institute
Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India in 2017. It has been
recognized as a “Grade I” University in India. Eight
departments in the Faculty of Science are under the DST-
FIST programme. Eight other departments are already
operating UGC-SAP and all the departments in the faculty
of sciences are assisted under DST-PURSE to the tune of 9
crores and 17.25 crores in two phases. Department of
Physics has been identified by the Tamil Nadu State to
create a high tech PG laboratory towards the Center for
Excellence in Physics.
The DRDO-BU-CLS was established as a joint
venture by DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of
Tamil Nadu at Bharathiar University and the Government of
Tamil Nadu at Bharathiar University campus. The
University offers 118 programmes to cater the educational
requirement of around 3,000 students on campus and 219
programmes under distance mode enrolling more than
one lakh students and around two lakh students through
affiliated colleges. On an average 450 Ph.D. degrees are
produced annually.
The state of the art facilities available for faculty
members and scholars nurture a culture of research in
cutting edge areas. A testimony to this is huge publication
of faculty members with high impact factor and h-index.
