7
o Iceland Volcano Cloud, 2010
EXAMPLES
8
o Aircraft Hijackings ; Turkish Airlines Flight 1754, Jan 2011o Flying from Oslo to Istanbulo Bulgarian airspace when an
unsuccessful attempt was made to hijack it
o Bomb and blow up the aircraft unless the plane returned to Norway
o Passengers overpowered the hijacker and the flight safely landed at IST
EXAMPLES
9
o The Geomagnetic North Pole
EXAMPLES
o Creates field disturbances that impact various powers systems ; electric grids, global positioning systems and telecommunications, transatlantic and transpacific great circle air routes
o Located on the northwestern edge of Greenland
o Serious geomagnetic storm could expose passengers to high radiation
levels and may disrupt the aircraft navigation system
10
o An Alaskan Volcano ; Pavlof Volcano, May 18 2013
o Erupting And Disrupting Air Travel
o Belching ash and spewing lava
BACKGROUND
o The volcano 625 miles southwest of Anchorage is among the most active volcanoes in the region, with nearly 40 known eruptions, according to the observatory
o Releasing a continuous plume of ash, gas, and steam, into the atmosphere
11
o Affect commercial airliners flying at least 30,000 feet (9,150 meters) above sea level between Asia and North America
RELATIONSHIP
o Local carrier PenAir, whose planes fly at between 15,000 and 20,000 feet, has canceled about a dozen flights so far
o Ace Air Cargo, also based in Anchorage, canceled two flights and delayed others, but for the most part its planes are flying around any ash
12
o Regional flight cancellationso Ash can wreck the function of
propeller or jet aircrafto Commercial airline traffico Ash can accumulate in a plane's
machinery, jamming the engines and causing them to fail
o Ash can pit the windscreens of the pilot's cabin, damage the fuselage and light covers
o In all, more than 60 planes have been written off by ash damage. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration put the benefit to aviation of better avoidance of volcanic ash at around $58m annually
