Position Overview
The State of the Environment (SoE) section has responsibility for environmental reporting and
implements two key interrelated initiatives: the State of the Environment report and the Essential
Environmental Measures (EEM) for Australia program.
Major Tasks
As a multi-disciplined team our work relies on strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation
skills, data analysis and management skills, digital transformation skills (ie. improving SoE Digital),
problem solving and collaboration within the department and with partner organisations such as
CSIRO or NCRIS facility organisations.
Major Project for Placement
We have interesting discrete pieces of work to progress in the following areas—dependent upon
field of study and interest of the intern:
Option 1: Participation in user research in support of State of the Environment reporting and
environmental-economic accounts. Carrying out user interviews, reaching out to NGOs,
environmental groups and businesses to understand what they need from environmental reporting
to inform their decision making.

Option 2: Assistance with program redesign of the EEM program to implement required change
following a program evaluation, and to align with new initiatives such as environmental-economic
accounting.
Option 3: Assistance with Project Management planning for the delivery of the 2021 State of the
Environment Report, providing input to governance and contributing to designing an approach to
incorporate susainable develop goal (SDG) reporting and environmental-economic accounts into
the report.
Option 4: Assistance with developing data and technical solutions for the workings of EEM, SDG
indicators, environmental-economic accounts and SoE datasets and reporting. This may include
inforgraphic animations, data life-cycle management, data management, information flow design.
SoE runs as a collaborative team using agile and lean tools such as Kanban. We work in 4 to 6
week sprints to deliver outcomes required to improve environmental reporting. The team
collaboratively set priorities of activities with task deadlines set by the individuals to meet the
broader activity timelines. The intern will work as part of a small team within the section to deliver a
piece of work that they can own with regular access to colleagues and manager as required.
The section contributes to the Meeting of Environment Ministers (MEM) secretariat for direct policy
input to environmental outcomes through MEM and the inter-jurisdicational Environment Senior
Officials Group. This placement is a great opportunity to build networks and collaborate with
experts on making meaningful changes in the way the public value the environment’s contribution
