WARSASH: Pupils atHook-with-Warsash C ofE Primary School spenta fortnight thinkingabout the Olympics.

Their two-weekOlympic Odysseyinvolved developing thepupils’ and teachers’knowledge and skills ofsports around the world.

It was launched withan Olympic procession,which involved eachyear group dressing asthe country they wouldrepresent over the fort-night, and the lighting ofa mock Olympic flamefrom a torch relayedacross the year groups.

There were assem-blies led by Olympickayaking medallistCampbell Walsh andParalympian gold medal-list Peter Hull MBE.They spoke about theirexperiences in theOlympics andParalympics, and talkedabout the London 2012Games.

Local communitygroups were also invitedto help teach sportsincluding tennis, judo,gymnastics, archery and

even synchronisedswimming.

The final dayinvolved pupils takingpart in their own mini-Olympics.

These activities werefunded by a grant fromCreative Partnershipsand funding from theschool’s PTFA.

HAVANT: Studentsfrom WarblingtonSchool in Havant, whichis affiliated to theChurch of England,achieved excellentGCSE results this sum-mer.

Its 16-year-oldsachieved their best everset of GCSEs, with 77

per cent passing withfive grade A*-Cs. That’sa 10 per cent improve-ment on last year. A totalof 51 per cent of stu-dents managed to passfive A*-Cs includingboth English and maths.

Headteacher OwenDavies said: “We havestarted this academicyear in a very upbeatmood. I would like tocongratulate all Year 11students. Our early entrypolicy with Year 10 andYear 9 students has beenvery successful.”

RYDE: St John’sChurch in Ryde hostedan unusual concert tohelp repair their bellsand re-roof the ParkCommunity Centre.

The varied line-upincluded Oakfield Choirand Gerry Thirlby’s re-working of 1950s clas-sics, local folk singerGlenn Koppany andsinger-songwriterGraham McCullough,who had frequentlyaccompanied the vicaron his Bob Dylan ses-sions at the High ParkTavern.

Wight Harmony per-formed When I’m 64,and St John’s organistFran Cox, fresh from herstand-up show at theEdinburgh Fringe,played a couple of pianopieces before the vicar,the Rev Hugh Wright,sang Bob Dylan’s Ring

McNeelance had arrivedhotfoot from the WhiteLion, Arreton, andwowed the audience,with guitar and then altosax. There was a finaljamming session after

which half of the Chan-cers burst in to ask “Arewe too late?” beforelaunching into two reg-gae numbers to bring theshow to a close.

The concert broughtthe sound of church bellsin Elmfield one stepcloser in garnering £750for the appeal.

LANGRISH: Langrishand Ramsdean held theirHarvest Service at StJohn the EvangelistChurch at 5pm on aSunday. Around 40 peo-ple enjoyed the service,which included musi-cians from the villageaccompanying the con-gregation.

The church was dec-orated in seasonal stylewith fruit, vegetablesand flowers in wonderfuldisplays from the vil-lagers.

The refreshmentsafterwards of bread,

cheese, wine and softdrinks were wellreceived.

COPNOR: Gosport-born author Lilian Harryhelped a Portsmouthchurch raise £560towards its mammothrebuilding project.

Lilian visited the gar-den café at St Cuthbert’sChurch in Copnor todraw the winning ticketsin a bumper raffle.

There were 26 prizesincluding £100 cash,signed novels by LilianHarry and AlanTitchmarsh and a signedphotograph of Pompeygoalkeeper JamieAshdown.

She was given aguided tour of the com-plex, much of which hasnow been transformedinto a thriving communi-ty facility, incorporatinga GPs’ surgery, commu-nity rooms, Surestart

children’s centre and aneducation centre foradults with learning dis-abilities.

She said: “I reallydid enjoy seeing StCuthbert’s. It was a greateye-opener for me. Ithink you have all donea wonderful job and cre-ated something very spe-cial.”

The £560 raised atthe event will gotowards rebuilding theworship area at the westend of the church.

NORTH END: Theorgan at St Mark’sChurch, North End, hasbeen recognised by theBritish Institute of OrganStudies as a fine NeoClassical Instrument.

It was awardedGrade II* listed in theinstitute’s Register ofHistoric Pipe Organs.

The certificate waspresented to team rectorthe Rev Tom Kennar atthe Organ Studies Day atthe church on October 1.The day ended with anexcellent organ recitalby Paul Hale, organist atSouthwell Minster.
