It’s just Division!• The polynomial we divide with is called

The Dividend• The polynomial we divide by is called

The Divisor• The answer is called

The Quotient

Page 3: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Let’s start

Let’s divide x2 + 4x + 4 by x + 2 :

x2 + 4x + 4

x + 2

Page 4: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Use the Long division

Page 5: Polynomial Long Division ÷

How to fill in as to start?

First, write the dividend inside.

Next, write the divisor outside.

Then, divide and the Quotient will be up.

Divisor Dividend

Quotient

Page 6: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Now Divide ...

x2 + 4x + 4x + 2

You divide the first monomial from the Dividend by the first monomial from the Divisor. You write the answer in the Quotient’s place.

x2 ÷ x = x

x

Page 7: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Multiply the answer x by the Divisor

x

x2 + 4x + 4x + 2

x2 + 2xWrite the

answer under the dividend

and subtract it from the dividend.

0 + 2x + 4

Page 8: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Not finished, continue the Division

x2 + 4x + 4x + 2

x

x2 + 2x

2x + 4Repeat the

same steps…

Divide 2x by x

+ 2

2x ÷ x = 2

Page 9: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Finish it!

x2 + 4x + 4x + 2-x2 - 2x

2x + 4

x + 2

Multiply 2 by the divisor.

2x + 4

0Subtract

and answer.

Page 10: Polynomial Long Division ÷

Finally…

x2 + 4x + 4

x + 2= x + 2
