PRELIMINARY ADDRESS.
THE Jlattering reception given by the World to innumerable
Compilations from the Works ofthe moft approved Modern Authors^
under the captivating title of their Beauties ; JJjouldfeem to warrant
a probability that an apology for the follozving Attempt would
fcarcely be necejfary. Religion, Morality, Metaphyfics, Thilofophy,
Foetry, and even Hijlory, has been repeatedly employed for this
purpofe-y whether fuch difplay of the art ofBook-making has been,
more beneficial to the Authors, the Bookfellers, or the Bublie, does
mt become the Editor of the enfuing pages to determine. The
prime intent of the prefcnt produMoit is to introduce for public
infpeSlion, a fpecies of Typographical Elegance as yet very little
(if at all) known ; and it was neceff'ary, to chufe the method and
matter fufficiently eligible, as well to difplay the beauties of the
performance, as to render itproductive ofthe benevolent purpofe it is
defignedto anfzver.
The Editor reprobates the idea of infmuating a wifh, that this
SeWlon may be confidered as fuperfedlng the Works of the
Caledonian Bards, or even comprehending all their beauties and
excellencies : Her befl hopes are only, that the principal EplfodeSy
AddrcJfeSj &c, will be more intereftir.g to the Readerj and eafier
retained
( ^'i )
refetined In ih Memory than when attached to Matter kfs confe-
qucntlalf and encumbered with a perpetual iteration of the fame
alliifions and images.
E'Very Jdmirer of pure Hcrolfm, exalted Sentimenty delicate
JffeEiion, and f.rong marked Character, miijl he lovers of the
Galic Poetry ; and zvith thefe the Editor flatters herfelf if fJje
does not afpire to the expeSla-ncy of Praife,f]:e zvill incurno great
degree of cenfare, by prefenting it in a form at leafl Novelj and in
aflile ofTypographical Superiority asyet unattemped.
Neverfo happy as when an oppertunity prefents, to tejiify the
fincerejl acknozvledgnunts of agrateful heart : the Editor cannot
emit embracing theprefentj by intreating the numerous Suhfcribers
to the pojihumous publications of the late Mr. Potter her Father,
to accept (as the only pqffible return in her power, for fuch unpre-
cented goodnefs ) her earnefl wijioes, that they may he ever in
poffejfion of thofe exciuifttely delightful feelings zvhich animate the
bofom offenfihility, whofe greatefi luxury is theparticipation of zvoes
not immediately its ozvn j and whofe fupreme pleafure is relieving
them.

the kings of Morven feem to have had very little friendly
