From the Desk of The President
Friends
It was a privilege for me to be the key note speaker at Nagpur for the World Plumbing
Day celebration by Maharashtra Plumbing Association.
My first question to audience was Who uses a shower to take bath?
Almost everybody raised their hands. One of the present contractors replied Today being a hot
day, I took a leisurely shower, may be half an hour.
Do you know how much water a shower discharges? How much water is allowed by National
Building Code of India?
They were all stunned after I explained them. The Value of water needs to be understood in a
better sense than a school going kid, because if you tell them to write an essay or draw a picture
on water saving they will simply show you running water while brushing teeth, washing car and
gardening with hose.
We being engineers need to provide users better insights from our engineering knowledge like a
hand wash does not require flow rate of more than 4 LPM as against the 10LPM or more flow of
Pillar taps generally available in the market. We need to specify flow rate of each and every
water-discharging fixture.
Have we ever tried to understand metallurgy of the faucet or the shower? Have we ever asked the
vendor as to how much lead content is a part of their brass fixtures? Will it not harm our skin or
our lungs? How safe are my children drinking water out of it?
Dont you all think we need to bring this into our regular practice to ask such questions to our
vendors as well as request our clients to enquire about this? At the same time we need to be
conversant with relevant IS codes.
Friends we the professionals of plumbing should be responsible for saving water and try and give
hygienic life to the water users. I also observed that the plumbing contractors in the small town
are more eager to learn good plumbing practices with an open mind.
I feel we all should reach them and train them in the field of our expertise to make their lives also
happy and healthy, since most of the population of our country lives either in villages or small
cities and town. Hope this initiative will surely bring better reputation to plumbing and people will
willingly adopt plumbing as one of the preferred professions.
