4 | THE BLOOMIN’ NEWS
was the fiftieth anniversary of the annual American Institute of Floral Designers Sympo-sium, and attendees from across the globe were excited beyond measure. At “Symposium X”
held in Seattle, the creativity was flowing. Old friends made new friends, vendors and growers were on hand to meet and greet, the schedule of activities was full and the florals were spectacular. And right in the big middle of it all, Phil Rulloda AAF AIFD PFCI, well known to our readers, was a star attraction. After all the visual masterpieces presented in demonstra-tions, presentations and workshops, Phil’s show on the final day wowed hundreds of attendees with spectacular colors, textures, combos and designs, including over-sized arrangements sized and designed for a palace.
Phil designed and planned his overall program, oversaw the concepts, chose the flowers, selected (and sometimes designed) the props and coordinated the music and staging. He worked to motivate attendees to seek inspiration from life around them, to channel their inspiration into floral art. Behind the scenes, Phil’s huge work area was filled with former students, colleagues and friends, who devoted hours and days to assembling his massive arrangements and helping to transport them to center stage at just the right moments. In an unexpected announcement, AIFD told attendees at Symposium X that it has established a scholarship fund in rec-ognition of Phil Rulloda’s enormous contributions to floral education. Congratulations, Phil Rulloda.

An extra-long bleached wooden box offers a rustic look to a classic holiday color combination of sage, white and deep green. For a tall mantelpiece, keep the white sticks long and stretching to the sky. To adapt this look for a centerpiece, move a few roses to the opposite side to make this a two sided design and shorten the branches.
or this year’s holiday celebrations, take a design cue from summer garden window boxes for your indoor mantelpieces and centerpieces. Choose
large and long wooden boxes in a variety of sizes and colors, then add loads of various greenery from colorful fall leaves in late September to pine-fresh evergreens in late November. Then, accent with everything from fresh blooms to dried branches or decorative ornaments for a variety of looks to please every client.
Boxes Boxes can be rustic wood or elegant ceramic, but to mimic the window box look, they should be large. The larger the box, the more of an impact it will make.
Color Palettes for Fall 2017 While hues of orange dominate autumn and the com-plimentary colors of red and green make a big impact in December each year, this fall’s decorative colors include subtle natural hues like sage, dusty pink, a dark beige
called “Butterum,” neutral gray and navy blue. One color combination that would work for the entire fall season turning into winter could be dusty eucalyptus with blue Eryngium, creamy Vendela roses and scented sprigs of pine and cedar.
Fillers & Flowers Keep in mind the key to great garden box designs is to have a “thriller, spiller and filler” in each design. Greenery should fill and spill out the sides and part of the front cover-ing the box and reach past a mantle or ledge. Thrillers are tall elements and wonderful focal flowers such as roses, orchids, amaryllis or large round glass ornaments. Filler op-tions include pinecones, berries or statice.

Kasey Cronquist, CEO and ambassador of California Cut Flower Commission and administrator of the Certi-fied American Grown program, visited Beijing and Shang-
hai, China recently. Also on the tour were Diana Roy of Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers, Ashley Nally of Cal-laCo; Mike A. Mellano Ph.D. of Mellano & Company; Jason Kendall of Kendall Farm; and Tyler Meskers of Oregon Flowers. The trip was funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
We understand that attendees to this year’s Fun ‘N Sun three-day event in Carlsbad had a great time and vis-ited Kendall Farms, Mellano & Company and other grow-ers in the area.
Kudos to some local floral designers named by “Florists Re-view” as some of the industry’s “brightest stars:” Alex Shiba-ta, floral wholesaler, Mt. Eden Floral Company in San Jose; Audrey Chaney AIFD, licensed real estate agent and owner of Botanica Specialty Rentals in Sacramento; Cagney Miller, general manager at Ocean Breeze Farms and project manager at Mobi’s Bouquets in Carpinteria; Christine Henderson AIFD, faculty member at Chico State University and owner of Garden Grace Designs; David Daneshgar, co-founder BloomNation, Los Angeles; Jennifer Kaslin, agriculture ed-ucator at Gridley High School in Gridley; and Katie Noon-an, Noonan’s Wine Country Designs, San Luis Obispo.
