ASTM Methods Comparison
POUR POINT ASTM Method Comparison
POUR POINT ASTM Method ComparisonISL/PAC CPP5GsThe CPP5GS is extremely slow and has poor precision uses a mechanical tilt method which takes 80 140 minutes to complete a pour point testCompare to Phase Technology pour point test takes 8 20 minutes
ISL/PAC MPP5GsThe ISL MPP5Gs uses ASTM D7346 to determine the no flow point of petroleum products. ASTM stated that there is no correlation between no flow and pour point.ASTM D7346 no flow point cannot be used to certify lube oil products for release because it is not a pour point method. The only accepted standards for product release are pour point methods, such as ASTM D5949 (as used by Phase Technology 70Xi analyzers).
POUR POINT ASTM Method ComparisonTanaka MPC-102Tanaka is the slowest automatic method reports of 90 120 minutes for low temperature lubesPhase Technology 70Xi can perform at least eight test runs in the time that it takes Tanaka to perform one single test! The MPC-102 requires 4 mL of sample (contrast to Phase Technology use of 0.15 mL). Larger sample volume introduces non-uniform temperature.Even with external liquid cooler, MPC-102 is not able to reach the low temperature level that Phase Technology does. Tanaka is only capable of going down to -30C with internal coolerPhase Technology reaches -88C with internal cooler
CLOUD POINT ASTM Method Comparison
CLOUD POINT ASTM Method ComparisonISL CPP-5GsWorst precision of any automatic methodRequires significant amount of time for sample preparation; water bath or oven must be used to bring sample to at least 14C above the expected cloud point.
ISL MPP-5GsInterlaboratory Round Robin results showed there is a statistically significant bias of 1.23C relative to ASTM D2500.Slow test speed Phase Technology 70Xi can perform at least five test runs in the time that it takes MPP-5Gs to perform one single test!
CLOUD POINT ASTM Method ComparisonTanaka MPC-102Interlaboratory Round Robin results showed there is a statistically significant bias of 1.68C relative to ASTM D2500.Tanaka is the slowest automatic method takes almost as long as the manual method. The MPC-102 requires 4 mL of sample (complare to Phase Technology use of 0.15 mL). Larger sample volume introduces non-uniform temperature.Even with external liquid cooler, MPC-102 is not able to reach the low temperature level that Phase Technology does. Tanaka is only capable of going down to -30C with internal coolerPhase Technology reaches -88C with internal cooler
FREEZE POINT ASTM Method Comparison
FREEZE POINT ASTM Method ComparisonISL/PAC takes 2 to 3 times longer to run a freeze point test compared to Phase TechnologyISL/PAC FZP52Gs freeze point analyzer has serious false warming issuesNumerous studies have shown high incidence of false warming as high as 60% in a BP studyShell Bulletin GLN 33a (September 14, 2006) warned that ISL can occasionally falsely show a failure if samples contain small amounts of high boiling point material
The Phase Technology ADVANTAGE:Phase Technologys 70Xi analyzer is 4 to 10 times faster than the competition!
Phase Technologys 70Xi analyzer has the worlds best precision
The 70Xi requires much less sample: 4 to 14 ml less needed per test!
The Phase Technology ADVANTAGE:Phase Technology has the oldest, most established, continuous-in-production automatic cold flow ASTM Methods 17 years of proven, in-the-field use! The PSA-70Xi tests pour, cloud and freeze point in one single unit. Youd have to buy two or three separate analyzers from our competitor!
Thank you!

At the end of a freeze point test, the display should resemble the following plot. When a sample is cooled, wax crystals form. The freeze point is the temperature at which the last crystals disappear; on the plot, it appears as the point where the curve turns flat during the warm-up, or the verify stage of the test.
Green line shows where we are warming sample
Analyzer continues warming a little just to make sure
: Contaminated
When you have off spec or contaminated sample the plot can tell you why.
Quick melting is Jet, but real freeze point is -47C
Slow diesel melting causing a tail could also be water or other contaminants
Red Colour is cooling / as is blue
Previous slide has no red because crystals formed very quickly
