THE GEOLOGISTS' ASSOCIATION Library was deposited in the Library ofUniversity College in 1907, on a more or less permanent basis. Cataloguesof this collection had been made during the early years of its history,i.e, from 1867-77, and were incorporated with the annual reports of theAssociation. The last catalogue of the series recorded 210 books. Since thattime the holdings of the Geologists' Association Library and the geologicalsection of the College Library have grown together; the former has expended chiefly in the periodical field, while the latter has been mainly concerned with the book collection. In this way the two have been complementary. By 1927 the collections had increased sufficientlyto justify the publication of a printed catalogue of books and periodicals, and this was compiledby Dr. W. Bonser, PH.D., F.L.S., a former member of the College Librarystaff from 1905-28 and Librarian of Birmingham University from 1929-52.

The post-war years have brought with them an immense increase in bookand periodical production and with it the expansion of libraries of everykind, so that it has again become necessary to publish a current catalogue.This is particularly necessary in an Association many of whose membersborrow exclusively by post and who have little or no opportunity ofconsulting the catalogue in the Library itself. As a corollary a printedcatalogue serves a purpose in revealing omissions in a collection which cansometimes be surprising, and should be remedied. Unlike the catalogueof 1927, which listed both books and periodicals, the present one is dividedinto two parts. The first part covers periodicals and geological surveys; thesecond part, to follow at a later date, will be a classified book catalogue.

The periodicals catalogue comprises all the geological periodicals boughtby or donated to the College Library and all the periodicals received onexchange by the Geologists' Association. (Institutions from which publications are received on exchange now number 146.) Other periodicals ofmore general scientific interest, such as Advancement of Science andNature, have also been included.

Arrangement is alphabetical by the title of the journal and follows theorder laid down in the World List of Scientific Periodicals. Definitearticles and conjunctions are ignored in the alphabetisation, as are also

adjectives such as 'Royal', 'Koniglich', etc. Russian and East Europeanjournal titles, are, in the main, transliterated, with the exception of a fewpre-war ones, the titles of which were formally translated into one or moreforeign languages. Two exceptions to the title order have been made in thecases of the Geological Societies of America and of London. The publications of these two bodies have been listed under the name of the Society.

Geological Surveys of various countries have been included in this partof the catalogue, as they are usually published in periodical form. Theyfollow the main journals list and are arranged in alphabetical order of theircountry of origin.

The holdings of each periodical have been given in outline only. Manyare imperfect, and to include detailed holdings would not only delay thepublication of the catalogue but also make it unnecessarily large. Thenumber and date of the first volume in the Library are given; imperfectruns of periodicals are indicated Imp. (Imperfect); and all periodicalsbeing received currently are marked i.p. (in progress).

As much care as possible has been taken over the compilation of thiscatalogue. Any errors which may be found will be corrected later when arevised and extended periodicals catalogue will be issued at the same timeas the book catalogue.
