Bid to extendRentaCoppresenceMELISSA LE ROUX
THE Rent-A-Cop pilot project, interms of which two Law Enforce-ment officers are hired to patrolRetreat and Grassy Park duringthe day, will be more effective ifthe working hours are extended.
That’s according to Ward Coun-cillor Jan Burger, who adds that theideal would be to employ police of-ficers around-the-clock, as would-be criminals are aware of the offic-ers’ hours of duty and plan their ac-tivities around that.
However, Burger says this is notfeasible as the subcouncil budgetdoes not extend to cover this.
“The possibility of having an of-ficer of the law take care of the wardall the time is there. However, themoney to make it happen is notthere,” he says.
The project was launched in Julylast year and will run until June. The officers are hired by RondevleiSubcouncil to patrol Grassy Parkand Retreat.
Wards 72 and 65 were chosen forthe pilot.
The Law Enforcement officers pa-trol from 08:00 and 16:00.
Their job is to assist with specificproblems encountered in the twowards, such as illegal dumping, drugs and alcohol being sold illegal-ly on residential properties andgeneral crime.
At the Rondevlei Subcouncilmeeting in March, Burger ex-pressed his concerns with the work-
ing hours of the Law Enforcementofficials.
He requested that the hours be ex-tended or that there be the optionof shift changes.
“We asked whether the workinghours of the officials could be ex-tended, as the problems in certainareas of the ward occurred way be-fore duties commenced and afterthe close of the working day shift,”he says.
The reasons for requesting ex-tended hours included problemssuch as:
. Delivery trucks travellingthrough residential streets in theward.
. Vehicles parked outside busi-nesses operating from residentialhomes, obstructing the view, block-ing pavements and posing a dangerto other motorists driving by.
. The ongoing taxi-related prob-lems such as oil leaks from vehiclesdamaging the roads and route per-mit checks.
. Persistent social problems atLangevlei and fishmongers dispos-ing the entrails into the vlei – con-tributing to the pollution of the vlei.
. Businesses operating fromhome, discharging waste water andoil into the stormwater drains andthe eventual pollution into the wa-ter bodies in the ward.
According to Burger, the peoplein the ward know exactly whattimes the Law Enforcement officialis on duty, and when to start withtheir “nonsense”.
“The hours aren’t working. If you
need them before 08:00 or after16:00, you would have to call CityPolice. “I trust the official to do thework. Nobody knows when they arein the ward, but when I take a lookat the statistics, I can see that theyhave been working,” he said.
Burger adds that there has beena reduction in crime in the wards. “When the officer is on duty, thearea is more stable,” he says.
The successes of the project inWard 72 include vagrants drinkingin public and sleeping in parks, aswell as fishmongers dumping en-trails at Langevlei.
Ward Councillor Derek Smithsays the programme is working
“very well” in his ward.“Nothing is too small for Inspec-
tor Gavin Greeve and he leaves nostone unturned,” said Smith.
The officer was hired to deal withissues such as illegal dumping, drug houses, shebeens and generalmunicipal complaints.
Smith says the officer keeps aclose eye on the criminal activity inthe area, especially on drug housesand shebeens, and as a result, manyhave shut down.
“It’s good to have a dedicated of-ficer working in our ward; it is defi-nitely money well spent.
“It adds a lot of value to the wardand I would like to see it renewed,
and for it to be extended to otherwards as well.”
People’s Post attempted to gaincomment from Steenberg PoliceStation, but was unable to at thetime of going to print.
Grassy Park Police Station wasalso contacted, but could not pro-vide People’s Post with a commenton how the Rent-A-Cop projecthelps them reduce crime in the ar-ea.

‘We’re taking back our streets’MELISSA PAPIER
THE long arm of the Mitchell’s PlainCommunity Police Forum (CPF) has
extended to Lavender Hill, with strongsupport shown to the community as theytake ownership of their streets after therecent spate of gang violence.
The Mitchell’s Plain Tactical ResponseUnit (TRU), reservists, CPF members, neighbourhood watches and sector com-manders from Mitchell’s Plain spent thepast two weeks assisting in the area, estab-lishing street and block committees in theSteenberg and Lavender Hill area.
Some officers and reservists from Mitch-ell’s Plain have been assigned to work with-in the area daily at various times.
The contingent, together with Steenbergpolice and the Steenberg CPF, took to thestreets three weeks ago making residentsaware that they need to take ownership oftheir streets through forming street com-mittees.
Spokesperson for Steenberg CPF, KevinSouthgate, says: “Mitchell’s Plain has expe-rienced gang violence before, and they camein to assist our community. Due to the infra-structure we have established block com-mittees.” This arose out of a walkabout two
weeks ago by the police and the CPF, whenthey met and spoke to residents about thevarious services offered by the police andthe CPF.
Southgate added: “Insteadof being reactionary we arenow being pro-active. Whatwe have discovered is thatparents know that their chil-dren are involved in crime, where guns are stored andwhere they are available.
“The residents were en-couraged to be accountableand to respect each other. The walk-about was to en-hance the partnership be-tween the police and thecommunity. People werevery responsive and wewant to sustain the relation-ship,” says Southgate.
The Mitchell’s Plain teamwas sent to work with Steen-berg Police Station, and to assist in under-standing the role of the sector commander.
The sector commanders were encouragedto work with the street and block commit-tees, which were established to better un-derstand and enhance and improve strate-gies to help with policing.
“We are hoping that after the walk-aboutand meeting with residents more peoplewill feel free to contact the police and shareinformation about criminal activities.
“People are scared toreport and tip-off the po-lice as they are riskingtheir lives and the safetyof their family. We arebuilding on the relation-shipwith thepolice to re-assure the communitythat they will be protect-ed. The relationshipshould be built on mutu-al respect,” he says.
Southgate says therehave been no major inci-dents in the past threeweeks.
“We have found thatwith all the activity inthe area now, shootingsand stabbings seem to be
spilling over into nearby areas.“Government must stamp out the prob-
lem of drugs and alcohol, as they know thehouses and it’s their responsibility to re-move the drug houses and the shebeens.
“All spheres of government need to workto rid the community of these elements,
which are contributing to the decay of thearea.”
Michael Jacobs, Mitchell’s Plain clusterCPF chairperson – who started the initia-tive – says theproper implementationof sec-tor policing in Lavender Hill, including thedeployment of dedicated sector command-ers, is essential to improving the relation-ship between the police and the community.
“Council’s failure to provide proper light-ing and decent road infrastructure in infor-mal settlements like Hillview and othersmakesproperpolicing almost an impossibletask. Bylaw enforcement in the area is ajoke. It does not exist.
“The gesture of acting Provincial Com-missioner Sharon Jeptha to walk hand-in-hand with the community must be com-mended. The response of the communitywas overwhelming and residents had lots tosay about the current policing strategieswithin the area. Residents are now morekeen on getting involved in their structuresto improve and take back their communi-ty,” he said.
Job opportunities availableMELISSA LE ROUX
WITH the municipal electionsaround the corner, the Independ-ent Electoral Commission (IEC)has created 15 630 temporaryvoluntary employment opportu-nities for community members.
This is in addition to other IECpositions, such as assistantproject coordinators and areamanagers.
The 15 630 temporary staff willman voting stations.
The IEC is a publicly-funded,permanent body that was estab-lished in terms of the ElectoralCommission Act of 1996.
Its purpose is to promote andsafeguard democracy in SouthAfrica.
Provincial Electoral Officer,Reverend Courtney Sampson, says the IEC’s task is to put allstructures and systems in placefor a “free and fair election with-out showing prejudice or favourto any of the participating politi-cal parties”.
The IEC’s job structure con-sists of permanent jobs as well as“expansion job structures” –temporary employment for peo-ple in the community during theelection period.
As each electoral project coor-dinator has an assistant, thereare 40 posts for the assistantproject coordinator position. There are also 387 posts for thearea manager position. Thesepositions are advertised in vari-ous publications as applicantswould need to have a tertiaryqualification.
The posts are terminated onemonth after the election is over.
Sampson said: “There are1 570 voting stations, and duringthe registration process, threestaff members are at each votingstation and 10 are present onelection day.”
However, there are currently
no more positions available atthe IEC, as they have all beenfilled.
According to Sampson, theIEC does not offer jobs.
“The 15 630 positions that areavailable at the time of electionsare voluntary positions, andthey get compensated for thetime spent working in aid of theelections,” he said.
The IEC advertised the availa-ble positions and anyone inter-ested could apply at the local of-fices in Athlone, Mitchell’sPlain, Strand, Constantia andBellville.
Training is provided by theIEC and began on Friday 1 April. It covered the operations in-volved during elections.
Staff are taught to handle diffi-cult situations, what their dutiesare and the legal aspects of thelegislation.
According to Sampson, politi-cal party officials or campaign-ers may not apply for a job at theIEC during election time.
“Having someone who cam-paigns for a particular politicalparty volunteering at a votingstation on election day will putthe IEC in a bad light, as theycould try to persuade people tovote for that party.
“There is a declaration thatthe volunteers at the voting sta-tion have to sign, saying thatthey are being truthful,” he says.
Any of the volunteers foundguilty of campaigning for a polit-ical party during the election pe-riod, will be removed.
Mitchell’s Plain CPF lends a helping hand to Steenberg and Lavender Hillto form street and block committees

DA leader storms outof community eventLIAM MOSES
THE national chairman of the DA, DrWilmot James, stormed
out of an event honouringRetreat community work-ers last week after the eventorganiser criticised West-ern Cape politicians in hisspeech.
James was attending anawards ceremony for Retreatcommunity workers in the Re-treat Community Centre onThursday 7 April when propor-tional councillor Aubrey Rob-inson, who was also the eventorganiser, criticised servicedelivery and politicians in Cape Town.
James says he left the event because hefelt that staying would indicate that heagreed with the criticism.
“He made comments about Patricia deLille which were completely unjustified. He levelled criticism at the governmentabout service delivery which were inap-propriate and I thought that the commentswere malicious and disingenuous,” saidJames.
“I thought that by continuing to sitthrough it, I would be party to him sayingwhat he is saying.”
In his speech, Robinson raised issuesabout service delivery, criticised politi-
cians in general, expressed his disappoint-ment thatPatricia deLille, theDAmayoralcandidate, could not attend the event and
criticised Albert Fritz, theWestern Cape MEC for Com-munity Safety, for not correct-ly addressing the recent gangviolence in Lavender Hill.
Robinson did not criticiseany specific political partyduring his speech, but raisedconcerns about the DA’s com-mitment to improvingRetreatafter James walked out.
Robinson said the walk-outwas an insult to everyonepresent.
“It is a slap in the face forme, the community workers
and everyone who was present,” said Rob-inson.
“I felt very bad. There was nothing aboutany party in my speech.”
Robinson is a proportional representa-tive councillor and was a member of theIndependent Democrats party, which re-cently merged with the DA.
He has not been chosen by the DA tostand in the forthcoming elections.

Heathfield man dies inCongo plane crashLIAM MOSES
A HEATHFIELD family has been left dev-astated by the sudden and unexpecteddeath of their “pillar of strength” days be-fore he was set to arrive home after sixmonths abroad.
Randall Quickfall (47) was killed on Mon-day 4 April when the plane transporting himto the N’Jili airport in Kinshasa, the capitalcity of the Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC), crashed, killing 32 of the 33 people onboard.
Quickfall had been working in the DRC asa deputy project manager for a companycalled Pacific Architects and Engineers(PAE), and was an experienced and highly-respected firefighter.
Cheryl Snyders, Quickfall’s older sister, says the sudden nature of her brother’s deathmakes it harder for the family to deal with.
“Any family that loses a member is trau-matised, but in our case, because it was sotragic, we are definitely devastated,” saidSnyders.
“My mother and father aren’t dealing withit well, his children aren’t dealing with itwell and I don’t think any of us are.”
Snyders was still visibly shocked by herbrother’s death when People’s Post visited thefamily’s home on Wednesday 7 April, andcame close to tears during the interview.
Mercia and William Quickfall, Randall’sparents, looked on solemnly as Snyders de-scribed her brother’s passion for his career.
“What I can say is that Randall died forwhat he loved,
“His work was his passion; he lived for hiswork. So he died being happy, I suppose.”
Quickfall was returning to his home basein Kinshasa from an assignment in Goma, and was set to return home to South Africaon Friday 15 April. He had planned to spendover a month in Cape Town on leave beforereturning to the DRC.
Snyders added that her brother’s dedica-tion to his work was so strong that he wasprepared to die.
“I visualise the torrential rains and thatplane going down, and him actually seeingthat death is coming,” said Snyders.
“But I don’t think he even complained be-cause he was executing his duty. And that iswho Randall Malcolm Quickfall was.”
The family have been living in Heathfieldfor close to 50 years.
Quickfall is survived by his two children,Carri (17) and Bryan (21) Quickfall.
Snyders said she would remember herbrother as a fun-loving, people’s person.
“He lived life, he enjoyed life, he loved peo-ple, he was bubbly,” said Snyders.
“He enjoyed entertaining. There was nevera limit to the budget when Randall enter-tained, to be honest.
“He enjoyed karaoke. He enjoyed dancingand parties, but even though he enjoyed thathenever ever forgot thatwegrewup inaGod-ly home.”
Quickfall’s body is expected to arrive in thecountry this week, and his family is in theprocess of making funeral arrangements.
Snyders added that the family’s faith inGod was helping them through “this difficulttime”.

Facing Up campaigns for changeOCCUPATIONAL Therapy (OT) studentsfrom the University of Cape Town (UCT),with the support of their lecturers, havebeen working with non-profit organisation,Facing Up, in Lavender Hill.
The Facing Up programme has been run-ning in Lavender Hill since 2000 and pro-motes health and well-being through vari-ous campaigns.
This year, final-year OT students havebeen working on campaigns to encouragecommunity upliftment. In February andMarch, students implemented campaigns atHillwood Primary, Levana Primary, ZerildaPark Primary and Lavender Hill Highschools.
Students identified barriers which couldbe removed to create a better life for thelearners. A common thread was that lear-ners had little awareness of the possible op-portunities that could be accessed. Most be-lieved there was almost no option that al-lowed for deviation from minimalexpectations. The campaign involves careerdevelopment programmes, exposure to newextra-mural activities, improving commu-nication skills and exposure to new skills, occupations and activities.
An example of one such campaign was acareer development programme run with 10Grade 10 pupils from Lavender Hill HighSchool.
The group explored three basic steps toconsider in developing one’s career: takingthe initiative, looking for opportunities andways to take advantage of such opportuni-ties.
The learners engaged in different discus-
sions and activities including a work shad-ow opportunity and exploring different fi-nance options for tertiary education. At thebeginning of the campaign the learners allhad dreams about their future work, butdidn’t believe that these dreams were attain-able. By the end of the campaign, it wasclear that the learners had started to consid-er their dreams as being achievable andwere beginning to make plans to access op-portunities. The learners’ self-belief anddrive to create their own future had startedto grow.
The UCT OT students feel that althoughthe change may be small, it was significant.Learners gained new skills and have beenexposed to different ideas and ways in whichthey can improve their lifestyles.
Future students will continue to workwith the learners’ emerging hopes anddreams and will continue to invest in theirpotential. UCT students have not only madea positive change, but have also beenchanged.
In addition, the UCT students and thoseinvolved and affected by the campaignswould like to thank Builders Warehouse inTokai, Jack’s Paint in Claremont, StarkeAryes, Pick n Pay, Cape Fellers and Mica, for their contributions towards the variouscampaigns.
These small favours made our work somuch more effective and enjoyable.
These campaigns serve as evidence thatthere is hope and so much potential and thatthrough time and effort, changes are beingmade.OLIVIA HEYNS, UCT STUDENT
Who do we vote for?WE are asked to register to vote. We aretold our vote counts. My question is whodoes our vote count for?
It counts for the big political parties. For them to have a power grip.
Our votes count for lazy, power-hun-gry, attention-seeking councillors andthen we are once again left with poorservice delivery with little or no infra-structure. Here are active, hard-work-ing, dedicated people such as AubreyRobinson. How do I vote for a communityactivist when his name does not appear
on the ballot? Why did Councillor Robin-son not qualify for re-election? Is it be-cause he made himself too visible and be-came a household name, or is it becausehe cared too much for his community bytaking on a personal approach to servicedelivery? We have surely been robbed ofa great leader for the next five years, sounless I see a name worthy of my vote, then South Africa and the Western Capehave been robbed of my vote as well.LM MANUELRetreat

Pavement pup charms way into hearts and homeATHINA MAY
LOVE, kindness and com-passion have transformed atiny, scruffy puppy – res-cued from the streets threemonths ago – into an adored,“energetic ball of fur”.
The pooch, then barely amonth old, was scrawny, dirtyand bewildered when she wasoffered for sale to two People’sPost staff members in the Pickn Pay shopping centre parkingarea in Tokai in January.
The puppy’s owner, a resi-dent of Hillview informal set-tlement in Retreat, sold thepuppy for R30.
The staff members bought
the puppy as they felt sorry forit.
Back at the office, People’sPost senior sales consultant,Karen Peiser, offered to fosterthe puppy and take it homewith her to Noordhoek.
The puppy was very frail, though. “We didn’t think shewould make it through thenight,” she said.
But the brave-hearted puppyclung to life and has since gonefrom strength to strength.
“Pupsy is full of character,”Karen says.
“She enjoys being spoilt byour two boys, who feed her bil-tong and allow her to sleep onthe bed with them. She rulesthe roost.”

Texting drivers the big road menaceSENDING text messages from your mobilephone while driving is more dangerous thanclimbing behind the wheel under the influen-ce of drink or drugs, a study by Britain’sTransport Research Laboratory (TRL) hasfound.
The reaction times of people texting as theydrove fell by 35 percent, while those who hadconsumed the legal limit of alcohol, or takencannabis, fell by 21 percent and 12 percent res-pectively, according to the study.
The study, which was commissioned by mo-toring group RAC Foundation, also found thatthe ability to stay in lanes or maintain a safedistance from the vehicle in front was worsethan drivers under the influence of cannabis.
“This research demonstrates how dange-rous it is to drive and text,” TRL senior humanfactors researcher Nick Reed said in a state-ment. He said drivers who texted were distrac-ted by taking their hand off the wheel to usetheir phone, by trying to read small text on thephone display and by thinking about how towrite their message.
“This combination of factors resulted in theimpairments to reaction time and vehiclecontrol that place the driver at a greater riskthan having consumed alcohol to the legal li-
mit for driving,” Reed said. One conclusion researchers made about
why texting is so dangerous is the length oftime it takes to compose a message whiledriving. The TRL said that composing a textmessage behind the wheel took 63 seconds, inwhich time a car travels half a mile withintown centre speed limits and over a mile (1.6km) within motorway speed limits.
Nearly half of all 18-24 year-olds admitted totexting as they drove, a separate survey by theRAC Foundation discovered.
The TRL study selected 17 people from the18-24 year-old age group to take part in a simu-lated road test, in which they were asked toread, write, and ignore texts on a variety ofroads.
“The participants in this study were almostunanimous in their view that drink-drivingwas the most dangerous action on the road,”RAC director Stephen Glaister said.
He said the research clearly showed that amotorist who is texting is significantly moreimpaired than a motorist at the legal limit foralcohol. “No responsiblemotoristwoulddrinkand drive,” Glaister said in the statement.
“We need to ensure that text devotees under-stand texting is hazardous.” – (wheels24.co.za)
Drivers may lose assetsPAY your traffic fines, or lose your TV set.Or your furniture, your car or even yourdriver’s licence.
That could be the fate, country wide, ofmotorists next year when the new regula-tions outlined in the Administration Adju-dication of Road Traffic Offences Act, areintroduced by the national Department ofTransport and Road Traffic ManagementCorporation (RTMC).
The points system, in terms of which mo-torists are accorded points when they com-mit traffic offences, and lose the pointswhen there have been no offences for sometime, will also be implemented.
Collen Msibi, spokesperson for the De-partment of Transport said the regulationsand the points system would be piloted inPretoria in January next year, by the Tsh-wane Metro Council.
“Depending on how it works there, there’ll be a decision on when to go nation-al,” Msibi said.
It would be up to the metro police offi-cials and traffic officers at local andprovin-cial level to apply the regulations. ThaboTsholetsane, acting chief of the RTMC, saidonly about 20% of the traffic fines issuedevery year, were paid.
“In Pretoria alone, there’s R70m in out-standing fines.”
Tsholetsane said in terms of the new reg-ulations, if motorists had not paid theirfines within three months their moveableassets could be confiscated.
“A warrant for the seizure would be ob-tained and moveable assets to the value ofthe outstanding fine would be seized.” Er-rant motorists could also be registered atthe Credit Bureau.
Motorists who paid a fine within amonth of its being issued could be con-sidered for a 50% reduction.
The points system works as follows:Every motorist begins with zero points.Depending on how serious the offenceis, points are awarded.
When a motorist has not committeda traffic offence for three months, onepoint is deducted. When a motoristreaches 12 points, the person’s driver’slicence can be suspended.
The new guidelines provide for aneNaTIS database of offences, making itpossible for a motorist’s history of of-fences to be called up on the scene ona computer screen.
Tsholetsane said this was the think-ing behind budgeting to provide a hand-held computer to every traffic officer inthe country who had to impose theseregulations.
An amount of R72m was being budget-ed to train officials, to develop the sys-tem and for communication, with amaximum budget of R13 000 per hand-held computer.
Msibi said the condition of the coun-try’s roads made it necessary to imposestricter controls.
“Most accidents are the result of traf-fic violations, and by taking strongersteps against offenders, the country’saccident toll can be considerably re-duced.
“We have to be strict if we want tohave safer roads. If people know theirdriver’s licences are at stake, they’lltake traffic rules more seriously,” hesaid. – Wheels24.co.za

Be wary of wounded LionsTASMIN CUPIDO
THE reaction of the DHL Storm-ers team, who suffered their firstdefeat of the season at the week-end, will dictate the team’s runfor the rest of the Super Rugbycompetition.
And head coach Allister Coetzeehopes his troops will take the lossin their stride, get up and learnfrom the mistakes made against theAustralian outfit at Newlands onSaturday. “This is a long and toughcompetition, and it is crucial thatthe guys pitch with their A-game ateach match,” Coetzee said.
“We need to take this loss on thechin and stand up to produce betterperformances.”
Unforced errors and ill-disciplinemarred the Stormers’ game plan inthe 19-6 defeat to the men from Bris-bane saw.
The Reds, who dominated thelacklustre Cape side in all aspectsof the game, were simply the betterside on the day – Coetzee is the firstto admit this. “We were not at ourbest; tactically the Reds were muchbetter and their physical intensitywas much higher – all credit to theReds,” he said.
A territorial game, keeping theStormers in their own half for mostof the match, saw the likes of QuadeCooper and Will Genia using tacti-
cal kicks to put pressure on the menin navy blue. Stints in the sin binfor Stormers eighthman, Duane
Vermeulen, and hooker, Tiaan Lie-benberg, also did not help them.
“We couldn’t gain or keep any
momentum and playing with 14men for 20 minutes of the match didnot aid us, either,” Coetzee says.
Despite the loss, they remain inthe top position on the South Afri-can conference log and third on thecombined log.
Now the Stormers will diverttheir attention to the MTN Lions, who they take on at Coca-Cola Parkin Johannesburg on Saturday after-noon. The last time the two sidesmet the Stormers came out 19-16victors in their first match of thecompetition.
John Mitchell’s side has had aspate of unfortunate, tightly-con-tested losses throughout the compe-tition and will be looking to raisethemselves from the bottom of thecombined log.
With nothing to lose, playing forpride in front of their home crowd, the men in red will put up a bravefight in the hope of turning the ta-bles on the high-flying Stormers.
Never afraid to run a risk, themen from Egoli will test the ever on-song Stormers defence, while a bat-tle in the engine room can also beexpected.
Coetzee expects inside centreJean de Villiers, who was a last-minute withdrawal from the Reds’clash, to make his return againstthe Lions this Saturday.

City to hostglobal festBRIAN GAFFNEY
THE Safa Cape Town is forging aheadwith plans to stage an eight-nation inter-national showpiece for under-20s – believ-ing it will generate a huge financial spin-off for amateur soccer in 2012.
So much so that the Safa CT applicationto run the event – in partnership with theCity of Cape Town – has already been ap-proved by the SA Football Association. Sa-fa CT president, Norman Arendse, dis-closed that the eight-nation championshipwill comprise the respective winners ofthe six Fifa Confederations Cup champi-onships, the SA under-20s and an addi-tional African team.
“It is vital that we recognise under-20soccer as a milestone for the developmentof our players. It is our responsibility asan amateur association to showcase thistalent,” said Arendse.
The blueprint for the 2012 champion-ship comes on the back of the successfulinaugural Cape Town International Chal-lenge for under-20s that was hosted by theSafa CT and the city in 2010.
Ghana, Brazil, South Africa and Nigeriavied for honours on the eve of the 2010World Cup in South Africa. Ghana defeat-ed Brazil 3-2 in the challenge final, watched by a 50 000-strong crowd at CapeTown Stadium – with the overall gate-tak-ings from all matches allowing the city tocontribute R600 000 to the coffers of the Sa-fa CT.
Arendse also disclosed that the Safa CThas secured increased financial supportfrom other stakeholders to stage its seniorand junior competitions this year.
. Coca-Cola has agreed to increase itssponsorship for the Coke knockout Cupchampionships from R500 000 to R600 000.
. Freeworld Coatings has upped itssponsorship for the club championshipsfor under-11s and under-13s from R50 000to R75 000.
. Peace activist Mary Burton will pa-tron the new Unity Cup for under-16 highschool teams from various communitiesto the tune of R150 000 this year; and
. Build It will sponsor junior tourna-ments in areas close to its branches acrossthe Peninsula.
Brent’s making it happenBrent’s making it happenBRIAN GAFFNEY
AT age 30, Brent Carelse re-sists thoughts about hang-
ing up his boots in the forseeablefuture – but rather focuses onwhat more he can aspire toachieve with Ajax Cape Town FCon the road ahead.
What is uppermost in Carelse’smind of course at the moment, is tohelp Ajax win the Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) champions title forthe first time in its 11-year history.
“I believe we can finish top if westay focused and avoid complacen-cy,” says Carelse, who has becomeno stranger on the champions’ ros-trum.
Carelse – eyeing a fourth win-ners’ medal – represented champi-ons Mamelodi Sundowns(2006/2007), whereafter he sharedin two of SuperSport United’s threeconsecutive league triumphs(2008/2009 and 2009/2010). NowAjax could enhance their champi-onship chances if they notch fullpoints against Golden Arrows atNewlands Stadium on Friday (start20:00).
Carelse, buoyed by Ajax CEOGeorge Comitis’ disclosure that hewill sign the midfield maestro nextseason – after he came on loan fromSuperSport in January – is expect-ed to continue his rich vein of formfor the Urban Warriors.
“I was not only looking for a newchallenge when I returned to Ajaxfrom SuperSport, where I felt mygame was stagnating because of myirregular appearances in matches.I also felt a need to settle in CapeTown with my family,” saidCarelse.
The presence of a versatile left-sided midfielder – who has thus farnetted four goals for Ajax – has alsobrought out the best in the free-scoring Thulani Serero and KhamaBilliat.
So often Carelse’s penchant for
engaging his pacey fellow playersin quick one-two plays has allowedAjax to prosper during their recentrun of successes.
The other motivation for Carelseis to be mentored by Dutch coachFoppe de Haan. “He is professionalin his approach and a very honestcoach. He constantly tells us thatwe are better players than what wethink we are.”
“DeHaan’s one-on-one chatswitheach player really makes us believein our abilities,” enthused Carelse.
The Johannesburg-born Carelseis also thankful to his father DougieCarelse – a former pro with CapeTown Spurs and Vereeniging OldBoys in the old Federation Profes-sional League – for inspiring himto pursue a soccer career.
“My dad insisted that I enrol atthe School of Excellence in Johan-nesburg during my teens.
“It was a tough experience but heencouraged me to persevere to en-sure my future in the game.
“He has always allowed me thefreedom to do things my way on thefield. But he will occasionally tellme what aspect of my game I needto improve on,” said Carelse junior, who first turned professional withHellenicFC (thencoachedbyGavinHunt) at age 17.
But back to the showdown withGolden Arrows. Remember that itwas Arrows that drew 2-2 with Ajaxin 2007/2008 to deny Ajax the titleon goal difference when the clubstied on points.
First choice custodian, HansVonk, is also ruled out by suspen-sion and will be replaced by AndrePetim on Friday night.
Good news for Ajax though, isthat Clayton Daniels returns fromsuspension and that SaamehgDoutie is fit to play.
. Tickets are on sale at Com-puticket and Shoprite/Checkersbranches. No tickets will be on saleat the stadium.
