Delvin Dennis address Commerce Development Team Delvin Dennis, P.E., District Engineer for the Houston District of the Texas Department of Transportation, and Law-rence J. Heckathorn, Area Engineer for Brazoria County, were guests at the December 10 meeting of the Commerce Connec-tion Team to address concerns of Pearland businesses and resi-dents, perhaps most prominently the procedure for securing cuts into parking areas along the new SH 288. The two engineers explained that feeder road curb cuts are an issue between TxDOT and the landowners, not the busi-nesses if the business does not have title to the land. Dennis recommended business owners who do not own the land under-neath their establishments contact their landlords and have them make arrangements for the curb cuts. Other areas discussed included these: • Thecontract forwideningHighway35hasbeen awarded, and construction will begin sometime in 2010. www.schlotzskys.com Restaurant
In 1971, a small shop on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas was home to a single, one-of-a-kind sandwich. The menu was succinct: one delectable sandwich composed of a unique combination of premium meats, cheeses, and marinated black olives served on hot Schlotzsky’s sourdough bread. From humble origins, The Original® created a passion-ate customer following. As we’ve grown, customers’ tastes have evolved, and so has our menu. The Original® sandwich is still the mainstay of Schlotzsky’s, but today you can also enjoy fresh baked bread, delicious hot sandwiches and panini, specialty pizzas, toasted wraps, freshly tossed salads, gourmet soups, and more! The Pearland Schlotzsky’s Deli, which opened this fall, will be happy to bring all of their yummy food to your next event.
Susie Ainsworth, OwnerPearland InsiderP.O. Box 841247Pearland, TX 77584281.857.6734 Susie Ainsworth is the owner of Pearland Insider, a local com-munity magazine whose mission is to bring the good news to Pearland residents. In the summer of 2007 Susie went into busi-ness with Jim Griffiths, owner of Pearland Furniture, and began Pearland Insider. She has been the editor in chief of the magazine since its inception. Susie took over complete ownership of Pearl-
and Insider in the spring of 2009. As a longtime resident of Pearland, she thought it just made sense to start a magazine right here in her hometown. Susie has lived in Pearland for almost 14 years, but grew up close by in League City and graduated from Clear Creek High School. After earning a degree a degree in Journalism from the University of Hous-ton, she began her career at ABC Channel 13, but she soon decided she did not want to be a news reporter and ventured off into the world of business communications. She hasworkedforHL&P,theforerunnerofReliantEnergy;IDEAAdvertisingGroup;and AIM Management Group, a mutual funds company. Her writing experience is varied—from TV broadcasting and video scriptwriting to employee communications andfinancialwriting. Susie has been married for 15 years and has three children: Amanda, Jake and Garrett. She was blessed to be able to stop working full time when her second child was born, but after being a stay-at-home mom for seven years, she started her journey into the publishing world. She states that she has learned so much publishing Pearland Insider and has enjoyed every minute. She feels it’s a great way for her to get out into the community and share with residents what’s happening in Pearland. Susie is active in the Pearland Chamber of Commerce where she serves as an ambassador. She is also active at St. Helen’s Catholic Church where she teaches CCE to fourth-graders. And she’s always ready to help out at the elementary where her sons attend school and has been a PTA member at her children’s schools for many years. She tries to read in her spare time and loves gardening and dancing. And of course this busy mother of three and business owner enjoys spending time with family and friends.Being the editor of Pearland Insider has given Susie the opportunity to meet many local and business owners and employees, awesome volunteers, longtime residents and com-munity leaders. She is looking forward to an exciting 2010. Happy New Year Pearland! Check out Pearland Insider at www.pearlandinsider.com.

Mr. Thomas also explainedhowopenfirehydrantsthataresometimesseenaroundthe city with water coming out of them are actually opened by the departmenttoflushoutwaterlines, somethingrequiredtokeepthewater fresh and clean.
Next we visited the city’s Animal Shelter and met with Shari Coleman, the Animal Control Supervisor. Ms. Coleman explained their process for receiving animals and the adoption procedures at the shelter. She provided a tour of shelter where the dogs are housed, as well as the cats and other animals. She also spoke about the daily cleaning of the areas where the animals are kept, anddiscussedthebenefitoftheexpansionprojectthatwasactually beginning at the facility the day of the tour. Ms. Coleman was very proud of the cleanliness of her facility compared to others she has visited in the area.
From there we went to meet the city’s Fire Marshal and FireChief,RolandGarcia and JackColbath, respectively. Mr.Garcia showed the class the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and explained the circumstances that would initiate the activation of the center. He told the class about the new EOC that will be locatedatthenewPublicSafetyBuildingandthemanybenefitstothe city of all of the state of the art equipment that will be housed at the new Cullen location. Mr. Sundseth introduced us to his staff and lieutenant on duty. The lieutenant showed us the ambulance for that location and allowed us to look and even go inside this vehicle. He explained some of the equipment that’s standard in each ambulance for the emergency medical services they provide.
Because of the shortness of time, the class had to quickly depart the EMS location to pick up Michelle Smith, theDirectorofParksandRecreationandtheAssistantDirectorofParksandRecreation,RosalynEpting.WhiledrivingbythefutureRecreationCenter/NatatoriumonBaileyRoad,Ms.Smithtalkedaboutthesizeofthefacilitythat’scur-rently under construction, 107,000 square feet, and she explained the partnership the city has with Pearland Independent School District as it relates to the Natatorium side of the facility. They were also recognized by the Mayor, one-by-one, and received a standing ovation from the Mayor, City Council and others in attendance at the council meeting that evening.
Although I am proud to say that I am an employee of the City of Pearland, the tour and meetings we had with the various city departments provided me with a different perspective on just how this city operates. It helped to clarify that no matter if you are the Mayor of this wonderful city, or someone occupying a much lower position, we all work towards that one goal of making this city the best that it can be, and that keeps a smile on my face.
