VE Day, 75th Anniversary I was talking about my 89 year old dad today and his memories of VE Day. He was 15. ‘Relief,’ he said. It had been a very dark time. Six years of World War. Huge sacrifices - war is always costly in lives
taken and harmed. And on May 8th 1945 the weight of the war was lifted. The Allies had defeated Nazi Germany and the Third Reich - re-leasing a great national outpouring of celebration and thanksgiving, street parties and all. 75 years on, what do we celebrate? Our deep gratitude to our forebears for the world we have grown up in. Our freedom. That our nation helped liberate the peoples of Europe from a great and monstrous evil. For the systems of international cooperation, international justice, that grew out of this. That a democratic Germany is fully integrated into the community of nations. For the Welfare State and NHS, the domestic fruits of victory. And knowing we cannot take any of this for granted. And so, as we mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, be inspired by those who have gone before us. And pledge yourself anew in the service of God for the peace and welfare of all nations and peoples:
Lord God our Father, we pledge ourselves to serve you and all human-kind, in the cause of peace, for the relief of want and suffering, and for the praise of your name. Guide us by your Spirit; give us wisdom; give us courage; give us hope; and keep us faithful now and always. Amen.

Prayers for Pete and Simon
Please pray for Pete Clark and Simon Phipps from
our parish. They have both applied for ordination
training and are being interviewed at a Bishop's
Advisory Panel (BAP) next week. With lockdown
they are having these interviews online using
Zoom, which is going to be a very different
experience but with the same outcome of a
recommendation to go forward (or not) for
training. Pete's interviews are Monday 11th at
9:00am and 1:30pm - Simon's are on Thursday
14th at 11:00am and 3:30pm.
Finance
We thought it would be helpful to inform you of
the detail of our current shortfall so that you can
pray with us for a way forward. These are some of
the financial impacts of closing our buildings:
• the loss of rental income and income from
groups of £1,740 per month
• cash giving on the plate (i.e. not planned giving)
is normally about £1,200 per month
• with suspension of public worship there is no
income from weddings, baptisms or funerals
• utility bills will be smaller but we are still paying
daily standing charges in all our buildings
• we are furloughing four members of staff but
have chosen to top up the 80% funding so that
they are not affected which is £120 per month
We are still committed to supporting all of our local
ministries like CAP and to maintain our giving to
other mission agencies. We are trusting that God
will provide. If anyone is able to help with a small
increase to their regular giving or a one-off gift
please get in touch with Paul.
We are also aware that many who normally would
give through the envelope scheme have been
unable to do so since lockdown. If you have
envelopes to be collected please phone the office
and we can arrange for someone to come to you.
The alternative would be to set up a standing
order through telephone or online banking.
The parish account details are:
Bank Sort Code: 40-52-40
Bank Account No: 00006178
Account Name: Parish of Keighley
May we each know the faithfulness of the God
who is with us at this time and may we rejoice at
his generous provision.

The Life of Jesus on YouTube
I am enjoying watching this at the moment about the life of Jesus and would recommend it if you are
able to watch it on
YouTube: https://
studios.vidangel.com/
the-chosen
You can get YouTube on
the TV now (if you’ve
got a Smart TV) – so it
looks better on the
bigger screen. The first
episode is setting the
scene with the Jewish and Roman leaders – so is a bit dark … but press on with hankies at the ready!

The Hope Project
Just a reminder about the Hope Project, check out the video explaining everything on our Facebook
page or see below:
Take an A5 piece of card or paper and create something on it that depicts what hope means
for you. It could be a drawing, a painting, words or even a photograph. When we are all
together again, we will assemble the A5 pieces into a large ‘tapestry’ poster to display in our
churches. Please share your pictures with us on Facebook or via email. We would love to see them! Any
questions? Please get in touch with Sarah, Town Centre Mission Apprentice, [email protected]
A message from Eric, Mission
Apprentice for Estates
Hello folks!
If you know of anyone who would
like a phone call from me
(following on from Anji’s brilliant
piece in last week’s PU) I could
phone them between 1:00pm
and 4:00pm Tuesday or Thursday
and 1:00pm and 3 :00pm Friday.
Or they could phone me. My
number is 07422 650890. Give
me a couple of days to read the
very latest safeguarding material.
CAP Life Skills
participants
who have
attended a
minimum of
one session are now eligible for
emergency funding from CAP for
food, fuel and phone top-ups. If
you know of anyone who needs
one of these please let me know.
You can also email me on
ACTS 435 has
increased the
maximum
amount for a
request to
£150 (from £120). So if you know
anyone who needs a fridge, bed,
tablet, carpet, wardrobe, etc., let
me know. All I need from them is
their name, date of birth and per-
mission to use all or some of their
story for their request on the
ACTS 435 website. I will need a
signature once the item is
received.
I am following the social
distancing rules very carefully.
Helping vulnerable people is one
of the four exceptions to the ‘stay
at home’ rule for non-key
workers (the other three being
food, medicine and exercise). In
everything I do I follow these
rules to the best of my ability.
My mother, with whom I live, is
vulnerable due to her age, so I am
very careful about limiting the
number of times I go out, how
long for, what I wear etc..
I am also praying. For individuals,
groups, humanity, me, loved
ones. It’s above my pay grade to
answer the question: Why Covid-
19? I hope we learn from it, that’s
all. I hope we become humbler
before nature. I hope we
re-evaluate ‘key workers’. I hope
we continue the togetherness I
have experienced like never
before.
All Mission
Apprentices
have studies
to do as part
of ‘intern
training’. So every Monday we
attend a Zoom session for a few
hours along with about 15 others.
At other times on our own there’s
Bible study and we have to read a
biography of an heroic Christian
and write a review. I have chosen
John Wesley but the book my
spiritual director has recommend-
ed to me is 685 pages long. By the
time I finish it we might be in the
middle of the next pandemic!
I have done tonnes of housework.
It takes a global health
emergency to get me to do this.
But seriously this has gone on
long enough, it’s time to go back
to normality! Why can’t you use
one cleaner for everything?
I hope you are well? It is hard to
tell against such a backdrop of
change but I hope you are as well
as possible.
God bless!
Eric

Notice for KSC 10:45am Services
The 10:45 KSC service will need a new service
rota from the beginning of June through to
September. Our service leaders are using the
current rota for our online services. None of us
knows, at present, when we will be able to go
away, visit family etc so Liz and I are producing a
new rota on the assumption that everyone will
be available. If during the rota period we are
able to go away then we would ask that you ar-
range your own swaps and let us know as usual.
Keep safe everyone, Liz and Anji
Calling all Soup Makers!
Welcome Cafe Take Away Re-opening!
Can YOU help by cooking soup?
Jackie and Natasha are re-opening the cafe every
Monday for the next 4 weeks (before reviewing
the service) and have decided that the easiest
thing to serve are jacket potatoes and soup as
this ensures we are providing more nutrition to
those we are serving and is relatively quick and
simple. We would be looking to serve around 20
people to begin with.
Please let Natasha know if you are willing to go
on a rota to help with the making of soup. She is
happy to come and collect. Many thanks.

Christian Aid Week begins on Sunday. Always after Easter, it’s resurrection faith in action. Christian Aid
reminds us of our Christian commitment to justice. They invite us to look beyond the local and parochial
and make faith connections with the poorest of the poor in our world. They do amazing work with
partners throughout the world. Please support!
Your gifts save lives!
Coronavirus impacts all of us. Poor communities are hit very hard by coronavirus. It’s
affecting families living in overcrowded refugee camps, and many vulnerable people
who have no water to clean their hands.
With your support, Christian Aid can limit the impact of the virus with life-saving soap and water.
Send an e-Envelope
We can’t raise money from the house to house collection because of the Coronavirus. But we can still
raise money for Christian Aid from home. Share an e-envelope with your friends through Social Media.
Follow the link below to find out how. Please support Christian Aid Week.

Are you feeling restricted?
Thanks to Beverley Barton for sharing this video on social isolation from God. It’s very short and has a message of hope and comfort to anyone unsettled by current events. And let’s face it, who isn’t! We are only human after all but we have the hope of Jesus Christ in our lives.
https://youtu.be/M8u-dZOTZD4
Some mainly crazy thoughts from within
self-isolation!
As one of those people who Carol Yoxall referred to
as being “not au fait with the internet” in last
week’s Parish Update I suggest that the following
glossary of terms which will certainly NOT be of any
help! (except, of course, the last one)
Zoom. A 21st century version of the 20th century
comic “Eagle” which featured Dan Dare as its hero.
This version features his grandson.
Texting. What preachers do when seeking out
topics for their sermons.
Skype. A bird of the snipe family which only breeds
on the Isle of Skye.
Face time. The horrific moment when we first look
in the mirror each day.
Facebook. Book of photos to remind us what our
family members look like.
App. “Application” – of course! But what do we
apply for, and how?
Laptop. Favourite resting place for Karen’s cat.
Google. The dawn chorus from heating pipes at
5:30am.
JESUS. The only real way, truth, and life!
His net was not really confusing at all.
It was designed to make us “fishers of men”!
Yours stir-crazily, Michael Parkinson
The UK Blessing
You may have seen this beautiful video, bringing together
worship leaders from more 65 different churches and
networks in the UK, to sing the UK Blessing. If not, then
it’s definitely worth a look.
