Parents as Partners:
How Parents and Schools Work Together to Close the Achievement Gap
Purpose
We believe that an informed and engaged parent is a powerful parent.
We believe that together we can work to Close the Achievement Gap for all children.
Goals
Gain knowledge of California state standards.
Gain information about the No Child Left Behind legislation and services available at Program Improvement schools.
Develop strategies to partner with schools to increase student achievement.
What are Academic Standards?
Standards are the skills and concepts at each grade level that every child should know and be able to do by the end of the year.
STAR Testing Program
Each spring, students are tested on how well they have mastered the standards at each grade level.
No Child Left Behind
Federal legislation passed in 2001 Requires states to develop
accountability systems to measure annual progress of schools and districts
All students in all schools must test at proficient or above by 2014
Schools that do not meet targets enter “Program Improvement” status
NCLB and Your School
Scores are reported by sub-group and school-wide basis, e.g., Race/ethnicity Program (English Learners, Special
Education) AYP also includes participation rates and
graduation rates (for high schools) School-wide interventions at P.I. Schools
may include: Summer School/Intersession Saturday & After school classes
NCLB and your child
How do you know if your child needs intervention? Is your child working at grade level? Is your child scoring at proficient or
advanced on the CST? Is your child progressing through the ELD
levels? How can you identify/access
intervention for your child?
Exiting Program Improvement
