Attendance: Well done to the 280 students who have 100% attendance in the first half term. Names will be put into a draw and
the first 100 names picked out will be awarded free pizza at seminar time during the first week back. We also had
392 students with at least 96%. Please remember that students must have at least 95% attendance to be in the top
100 achievement points.

This week I had the pleasure of awarding the Attendance cup to Nelson House students at our Rewards Assembly.
They had the highest Attendance with 95%. Well done! This cup will be in the Reception area together with the
Highest Achievement cup and the Endeavour Trophy.

Year 7 and 8 Weekly Maths Challenge:
Each Friday Year 7 and 8 will be set a Maths Challenge. The Challenge will be on Show My Homework and can also
be found outside CF2. The answers can be emailed to [email protected] or hand given to Mrs
Amos by Wednesday 3pm.
A winner from each year group will be chosen at random to win Maths Star of the Week. They will be awarded with
a certificate, a postcard home and a small prize. All students with the correct answer will also receive a certificate.

Rewards Update:
This week we celebrated our first reward assembly of this term. We started on Tuesday with KS4, our Head Girl
Kaitlyn Senter started the assembly off by reading out the names of the students who worked hard to be in the top
100. Here are the names:-

KLA have a new trophy to present this year called the Endeavour Cup. This will be presented to a student at the end
of every half term who has made the most effort to change the way they work or who always tries to display 110%
effort to make the most of their lessons. They may not always get it right but the determination is always there. KS4
received 7 nominations for this award, here are the names,

Booty. Congratulations to all students.

Cresswell was presented with the behaviour trophy in both KS3 and
KS4 assemblies. The attendance trophy was presented to Nelson for
achieving 94.9%, this was also presented in both assemblies. Mr May
accepted the trophy from Mr Hill, Head teacher at Howard Junior
School on behalf of Nelson House and Miss Carnell accepted the
trophy from Mr Rimmer on behalf of Cresswell House. Well done to
them both.

Over 27,302 reward points have been gained by the students since the start of term, what an achievement for
students here at KLA.

I then had the great pleasure of announcing the first winner of our new award, The Endeavour Trophy. The
nominations from KS3 were Christopher Warren and Kaiden Lane.
Christopher was the lucky winner. He was nominated by Miss Barber from English for consistently trying his
hardest, really appreciates feedback and uses it to improve his work . Photo below is of Christopher receiving his
award from Mr Hill and Mr Rimmer. Mr Hill also brought along four of his students in Y6 to see what secondary
school life is really like.
I would just like to the thank you to Kaitlyn Senter and Edward Dew our Head boy/girl for all their help with the
assemblies and Mr Hill for accepting our invitation to help present the rewards.

The school nurse offers weekly drop-in sessions every Wednesday lunchtime for any student who wishes to speak to
her. She can be found in the Intervention Room opposite Student Services. No appointment is necessary!

MacArthur House update – Compiled by Mr Endersby
Last week I had the great pleasure of leading an assembly where I announced Ma Arthur s House charities for this
year. We are going to be supporting two charities this time, hi h are Vas ulitis UK a d the Alzhei er s So iet . These charities have been nominated by Annabel Bennington and Grace Byfield-Stubbs who went above and beyond
the call of duty by writing lengthy, detailed and emotional letters explaining why we should support these charities.
When I read the letters I was very touched by their descriptive and heartfelt writing and was left in no doubt that
MacArthur would do all they could this year to support these charities.
Since then, Grace, has also come up with a great idea to orga ise a Christ as Ju per da at KLA to o ti ue raisi g money for the charities, which is fantastic! I would like to use this opportunity to inform all students that if they have
any fund raising ideas please do come and see me and let me know your thoughts.
During the same assembly two other KLA students, Sara Albuquerque and Louise Taylor, presented a cheque for
£449.00 to Purfleet Trust, who do lots of work with the homeless. This money was raised last year by KLA cyclists
who, as a team, took on the challenge of riding as many miles as possible in a whole school day. The team covered
950 miles on the day and the event was a great success. This may be a great event to repeat this year if any students
are interested in taking part.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive well done to all students who have taken the time to get
involved in Ma Arthur s harit efforts duri g this half ter a d I do hope the e erg , e thusias a d effort continues after the half term break. Enjoy your holiday everyone!
Key Stage 3 Round Up – Compiled by Mrs Germaney:
This half term has gone so quick! And what a half term it has been.
We had a fantastic rewards assembly this week. Mrs Thomas has been busy organising the stude t s ertifi ates a d vouchers as there were over 70 awarded! Well done to all of the students that were in the top 100 and thank you to
everyone who joined us to celebrate, the atmosphere was fantastic! This year Mrs Thomas has introduced the
Endeavour trophy and we were lucky to have two students nominated for the award, Kaiden Lane (Y7) and
Christopher Warren (Y8). It was a very hard decision as the nomination reasons were both worthy however we
ould o l ha e o e i er…Christopher Warre ! This is an amazing award and we are all very proud of you
Christopher.
We have a Year 10 student who is a member of the Police cadets, as part of her commitment to supporting the
community she will be collecting towels for the RSPCA. This will happen after half term and I will send more
information later, but if you do have a clear out over half term Sophie would be grateful for any donations, thank
you.
Year 7 Student of the Week nominations
7HDR is Grace Johnson for making some amazing scones in food tech and working really hard in Science and Maths.
7CMC is Catherine Castro she is always polite, cheerful and a lovely girl.
7RCA is Callum Poole, a fantastic start to KLA over 40 achievement points and no behaviour points
7ABL is Nathan always looks very smart and is working hard in all lessons.
7SGO is Ethan Kenyon, he comes into school and just gets it right every day, well done Ethan!
7EBL- Mickey Brown for his excellent behaviour record, willingness to always help others and a very pleasant
member of the form.

Year 8 Student of the Week nominations
8DSC - Riley works very conscientiously with the form tasks and is often completing extension tasks.
8AAN - Courtney Brown for having a much more positive attitude to school and a better behaviour in general.
8ATA - Lily King, she is a pleasant and polite young lady who quietly gets on with tasks. She is always willing to help
when needed, a good role model for other students.
8AGI - Harry Appleton for his un-ending enthusiasm.
8SHA - Brianna Stebbings, working really hard on tasks in form, even achieving black belt in numeracy ninja for the
last three weeks.
8GLA - Agata Kulesa has a great attitude to KLA life and is a pleasure to have in form.

I would like to thank all of the Year 7 and 8 form tutors for their hard work and support over the last 7 weeks, enjoy
the half term break.

Tamazin Bacon was the student with the highest achievement points in the Academy this half term receiving her
reward from Mr Rimmer, Head off School. Tamazin has had a great half term, being Student of the Week and having
the highest achievement points on many days.
Further to those rewards many of our students were recognised for their excellent work ethic and progress by the
College of West Anglia. Well done to Charlie Turner, Lilly Wyatt, Jaileigh Allen, Mae Dobie, Nikita Jarman-Thrower,
Elise Majer, Paige Self and Roma Stevens.

11 RES - Natasha Moore - Natasha showed great determination this week, studying a new, very difficult, topic in
Maths (Vectors!), which she openly admitted she did not enjoy! However, she kept asking for help, and effectively
used tutor time to get further tuition, starting her Maths lesson 'early' by working on Maths lesson resources in
tutor time. Although Natasha did not find Vectors easy, her positive attitude meant she developed a good
understanding of this new topic.
11 LBE - Adam Obey – just on the ball all the time
11 JHA - Hannah Evans – always comes in and gets on with her work, no questions asked.
11 KPO – Sharnia Soden – A delightful hardworking young lady.

Year 7 + 8 trip London - Museum of London & Theatre
The students really enjoyed the experience and the exhibits at the museum. The Railway Childre pro ed A azi g! seeing a full steam train roll through the audience was astounding, a rare opportunity to see a traverse theatre in

New York Trip - 23rd-27th March 2017
A visit has been organised for the Drama/Performing Arts students and ALL interested KLA students to take part in a
visit to New York next year. There are currently one space available. To secure a place £100:00 deposit will need to
be with Mr Hodkinson with consent forms signed.
The price has been kept as reasonable as possible, namely £789:00 including coach transfers both ends, flight, hotel,
drama workshop and theatre tickets. Students will need a passport and visa (ESTA) $14/£10:00. Spending money is
also needed, of course and also money for meals whilst away. Extra activity prices are as listed below.
The balance can be paid in one amount or smaller amounts as you choose, provided the final payment is made by
February 2017 at the absolute latest.
