Carl Bartlett will represent the Suffolk C oun ty Police A th le tic League from Riverhead’s "O pen H ouse” team on a trip to W ashington, D.C. There are eight team s in Suffolk County and each team had at least one boy chosen to participate in the National Police Athletic League Basketball Tournament to be held in Washington this m o n th . T he boys w ere se le c te d because of outstanding ability as basketball players and their a ttitudes toward team m ates. Carl is 17 years old, goes to Riverhead High School and lives on N orthv ille Turnpike with his sister and broth- er-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Price. This is a great honor, and we all wish you good luck, Carl.

Glenwood Estates was swinging Saturday night. Chairmen Ed and Marion Stack planned a Valentine Dance and, despite Florida and the Flu, about 70 wended their way to the Recreation Hall to eat, drink and be merry. Mary Smith was the merriest. The host and hostess, Fred and Mae Schubert, greeted e v e ry o n e , and w hen th e m usic started... so did Mary. First, the Broom Dance... with husband Bill applauding her... then on to the C h a r le s to n , jo in ed by F red and Josephine W eissman, Mary Rick- steen, Mae and John Swoboda. Then the Sing-a- Long with Chris Bermel, president of the Association, the Cannons (John and Marion) joining Mary in "H ear t of My H eart,” "O ld Mill S tream ” and other favorites you know and love. When the door prize of a shampoo and set from "C ut 'n Curl” was won by George Otto, it got chuckles from Norma B erm el, A de line G raff, A gnes Haas, Jeanne and Frank Grande, and the crowd... because George is a little short on hair. However, he gave the prize to his wife, and got back with everybody to the business of having a good tim e... which they did.

Talk about surprises... no one ever got a bigger one than Jerry M apes on his 30th birthday. His w ife, C h r is t in e , and l i t t le girU K a re n , in v i ted 90 f r ie n d s and relatives to the Firehouse on 2nd Street. Then Jerry was called and asked to come down to work on a fire truck. He never suspected a thing. His mom and dad, June and Ray Mapes; Christine’s mom, M arie Partridge; aunt and uncle Gloria and Steve Lonski; Barry and Kathy Karlin; Linda Mapes; Barbara Zda- nowicz, Mary Lech; Mary Goro- leski; Freddy Sterzenbach; Mark and Gary Hotchkiss; Dagmar and Roger S te p h e n se n an d ev e ry o n e there, sang “ Happy Birthday Je r ry ,” ate, danced to the Jeff Hawk’s Trio, were delighted by the huge cake decorated with an icing bikini clad lady (very well endowed)... and watched Jerry open all of his gifts. He was helped in the gift departm ent by two-year-old Karen, d re s s e d in a b lu e and w hite jum per, and having more fun than anyone. She left at midnight... but the rest of the party-goers d idn’t leave till 4 a.m . Now, th a t’s a birthday to remember! Jerry sends a special thank you to all of his friends.
Mrs. William Hannah will be the g u e s t s p e a k e r of th e R iv erh ead Garden Club’s February 24th m eeting, which will be held in the Riverhead Historical Society Building on W est Main Street, Riverhead, at 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Mrs. Hannah, a highly informed m ember, will talk on the use of antique containers for floral arrangements. T h is p ro g ra m will be of g re a t interest, and all members are urged to attend. The club has hired a bus to ta k e its m e m b e rs and th e ir guests to the Flower Show in the N assau C olliseum on T h u rsd ay , March 11. The bus will leave the First Street parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and will return approximately at 3:30 p.m. The cost for the bus trip and the show’s admission is SS.2S per person. Snow did little to ham per the fun at the Aquebogue home of Elinor Young on Friday night. Friends and m embers of the family helped her surprise her daughter-in-law, Susan (Bruce's wife), and son, David, on their 21st birthdays. Susan’s is on
February 11 and David's is on February 12... can’t let a coincidence like that go by unnoticed! They had good conversation... pool (the girls outshot the fellows) and lots of birthday cake.

Last month 30 members of the Riverhead Elks and 10 Elkettes entertained 31 veterans from the Northport Hospital. Herb Fleisch- man got the skillets out and rustled up a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. Irv Petraszewski played the organ while Walter Flanagan (the Irish tenor who says he should be changed into two fives) led an old-fashioned sing-a-long. The words w ere p ro je c te d on th e wall so everyone could join in... then Bingo gam es with prizes and each veteran received a gift at the end of the party. June Fleischman, Trudy Has- selbach, Jean Martin, and everyone there saw to it that the guys had a great time.

Bill Grover III, son of Eileen and Bill Grover of Further Lane, is on the D ean’s List of S.U.N.Y. M aritime College at Fort Schuyler, N.Y. Bill is in his third year, and also was the recipient of a scholarship from Bethlehem Steel.
Happy to hear from John Schuller II, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schuller of Pond View Road. John, a ’74 graduate of Riverhead High School, is a Radioman 3rd Class in the United States Coast Guard and will be celebrating a year and a half service on March 9. H e’ll celebrate ab o a rd th e C oast G uard C u t te r “ B a ssw o o d ” on h is way to a two-month deployment to the Philippines and Taiwan. Lots of good luck, John, on your new assignment.

The Riverhead Kiwanis Club and all Kiwanis Clubs in the area have a Testimonial Dinner-Dance planned for March 6 to honor Jerry Villani of Havil’s Jewelry Store on Main Street. Jerry was the first Kiwanis Lt. Governor of Suffolk East, and is a charter member and past president of the Riverhead club.
