Soul PictureEarly Life Writing
Dear Reader, From the time I picked up a crayon and scribbled absolute nonsense to
now…which I still do the exact same thing and just attempt to mask it (but in reality I’m still the preschooler gripping the crayon with determination to write something beautiful and impressive to bring home to mommy and daddy, but failing miserably when I look back on it years or even minutes later). But who says writing has to be beautiful for other people? Just for me, that’s what I’ve learned. My writing is just for me. Sure it’s taken me a long time to learn that lesson but I now know that I won’t be satisfied with an ‘A’ on a paper unless I know it’s my best; and isn’t that what really matters?
Elementary school was filled with creating books about my best friends and our adventures with our pets. Then middle school came and the seriousness crept up on us, really baring its teeth in high school with essays and papers that challenged us to squeeze out the creativity of our drying sponge of a brain to dribble on to each essay. Not that that was a bad thing. When I look back it was a challenge opposed by our imagination. In one corner of the ring was the prompt, the other: my imagination. It has been my duty to blend the prompt with creativity giving my answer the oomph it needed to entertain.
I’m a performer: that’s my job. Love, Kate Gadzinski
