ITTO MEMBERS (60): Producers (33) & Consumers (27) To promote sustainable development through trade,

conservation and best-practice forest management

80% of the world’s tropical forests 90% of the world’s tropical timber trade

ITTO’s initiatives related to REDD+ through the REDDES Thematic Programme

REDDES – Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Enhancing Environmental Services in Tropical Forests REDDES objective is to strengthen the capacity of ITTO developing member countries and their stakeholders to:

– reduce unplanned deforestation – reduce forest degradation – maintain and enhance climate change mitigation and

other environmental services of tropical forests; and – contribute to the social and economic sustainability of

forest-dependent communities

ITTO’s initiatives related to REDD+ through the REDDES Thematic Programme

(Putting REDDES programme into practice) 1. Monitoring Pan-Amazonian forest (8 Amazon

Countries) 2. Social processes for SFM (Guatemala) 3. Resources assessment & monitoring (Guyana) 4. Communities and PES (Peru) 5. Carbon stock inventory (Dem Rep Congo) 6. Collaborative management for REDD (Ghana) 7. PES in degraded/secondary forests (China) 8. SFM to enhance carbon stocks (Indonesia) 9. REDD in South Sumatra peatland (Indonesia) 10. Voluntary carbon marketing scheme (ITTO)

ITTO Experience with Biodiversity Conservation ITTO mandate implies protection of biodiversity in both protected areas and production forests SFM means taking care of all forest values (Guidelines) Guidelines on the Conservation of Biodiversity in Tropical Production Forests (1993) – Revision 2009: 11 Principles, 46 Guidelines and related Priority Actions (good basis for biodiversity safeguards)

ITTO Experience with Biodiversity Conservation [at the heart of ITTO’s mandate]

Promoting sustainable management of protected areas as a key element of land-use strategy

Development of transboundary conservation areas (around 10 millions ha)

Biological corridors

Sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems

Joint CBD/ITTO Collaborative Initiative to conserve biodiversity in tropical forests

[CBD/ITTO Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)]

CBD/ITTO MoU signed by ES/CBD and ED/ITTO on 02 March 2010 and valid until 31 December 2014

Purpose of CBD/ITTO MoU with focus on tropical forests and biodiversity conservation:

(*) Identify, develop and implement targeted joint activities on forests between the CBD and ITTO Secretariats [programme support document]

(*) Facilitate information exchange between the Secretariats
